Very upsetting start.

Excellent programme - so sad. Glad the mum & dad stayed together.

123MothergotafleA · 16/05/2017 00:24

My family concluded that Dave Kelly was denied his just desserts because he failed to expose his left nipple or give the right handshake.
This was without doubt the most real acting I've ever seen, absolutely everyone involved were tremendous. I thought the " parents" were terrific, but that the DK actor was out of this world. Just brilliant work all round.
As for the Crocks of shite "Crockys"et al, sadly their sort are all too plentiful Lord save us....

WomanScorned · 16/05/2017 00:32

Is there any way I can watch this?
I just have the terrestrial plus a few free view channels.
TIA

If you just look at the Mercer, Yates families etc you might feel depressed about the state of the country. But you need to look at all the good people who stood up to them and won. I never really followed what happened after Rhys Jones was killed and I'm glad the story has been told. I also have to add, as the mother of two teenage boys, Jordan and 'Kevin' broke my heart. They are also victims and I hope they go on to lead positive lives. The actors playing themwere brilliant too.
The only shit acting was from the woman playing the ACC, Pat Gallan. Appalling Scottish accent.

leccybill · 16/05/2017 12:54

The actor playing Rhys' father could not do a scouse accent to save his life but I will let that go as the rest of the cast were sublime, and his actual acting was great.
One of my ex pupils played one of the gang members, I'm very proud of him.

icebearforpresident · 16/05/2017 13:15

I NEVER watch anything on itv but i watched the first two episodes last night while trying to settle the baby at 1am. Hands down this is one of the best british dramas in years,i was only about 16 when it happened so to see it now i have my own kids has been wretching.

MissEliza · 16/05/2017 15:55

Leccybill to me he sounded just fine but I'm not from that part of the world! Everyone else probably thought the Scottish policewoman was just fine.

Kitsandkids · 16/05/2017 16:35

Even my husband was transfixed last night and he normally can't stand real life drama type programmes!

The lads playing the gang members did a good acting job - I'm sure they're lovely boys really so it must have been tough playing such awful people!

The two playing the parents were absolutely excellent, as was the policeman.

Such a sad story, and interesting that they showed that the court case wasn't the end of the matter. The poor parents still had to go on living with the loss of their little boy, and I understand why the mother found it even harder once the case wasn't there to focus on anymore. Sad

Upsy1981 · 16/05/2017 18:24

According to the Liverpool Echo, Dave Kelly retired almost immediately after that meeting, having already completed his 30 years service and whilst still at Superintendent level, thereby getting his final salary pension at Superintendent grade. And I can't say I blame him! They lost a bloody good cop there who could have gone on to solve many other cases. I s lso read somewhere that he was one of the first detectives on the scene when James Bulger was found but not sure if that's true.

deloresclaiborne · 16/05/2017 18:32

i was glad that the one lad that got a 7 year sentence appealled and then got 12

TizzyDongue · 16/05/2017 19:37

I'm only on the 3rd episode (in Ireland so different schedule). Agree the acting is amazing.

I was thinking though as Kev entered the witness protection act - was it known at the time that a witness had been taken into the witness protection act? I'm wondering because (and forgive my ignorance if this isn't how it works) if a new person turns up in an area and has quite a distinct local accent wouldn't people in the new area be able to put 2 and 2 together?

Soubriquet · 16/05/2017 19:51

I've just watched it

The lack of remorse or respect is disgusting

Honestly I would have found it hard not to scream at them especially with their "all this for one boy" comment

Couldn't believe it when the mum got told she had to stop crying or she wouldn't be allowed back in the court room

I mean fgs her son was murdered. Course she's going to cry!

A very good portrayal though. Everyone was very good

MyGastIsFlabbered · 16/05/2017 19:52

For me as well one of the shocking bits was when they were in the morgue and the mum was told she couldn't touch him again or she'd be arrested.

pineappleeyes · 16/05/2017 20:03

Cunts. The defendants were cunts. No other words for them. I found myself grinding my teeth when they were messing around in the dock.
The acting was fantastic. I was gripped
I often think of ryhs's parents & brother. His parents were so brave attending court & enduring what they saw and heard. Utterly heartbreaking

Soubriquet · 16/05/2017 20:06

It must be hard being a defending lawyer when you have to try and defend scum like that

Soubriquet · 16/05/2017 21:06

could he be anymore selfish

Upsy1981 · 17/05/2017 07:29

Agree with Dad's scouse accent though, but that is only minor criticism in an otherwise outstanding drama.

herethereandeverywhere · 17/05/2017 22:42

I watched the first 3 episodes back to back last week, that was hard. In particular the first episode with him dying and the hospital scenes were harrowing. So real and so awful. Truly harrowing.

I watched the last one today and agreed about the scumbags behaviour in court and the words of that one lad Yates? About it all being for a kid. Awful excuses for human beings.

That poor family, I hope they have found some sort of peace.

Ceto · 18/05/2017 01:58

That report about Mercer thinking of suing is just Sun clickbait. When you read it, it becomes clear that it's only some of the other inmates suggesting it to him. The reality is that no action would ever get off the ground; contrary to the lags' suggestion, there cannot be any lawyers gagging to take the case because it's a cast iron loser. Mercer cannot suggest that his reputation has been damaged because it was already at rock bottom.

honeyrider · 22/05/2017 21:09

Disgusting to see that Mercer got a lot of presents and fan mail after the first episode was aired.

herethereandeverywhere · 24/05/2017 11:35

honeyrider really? where was that reported?
