I've just checked on iplayer and Arnott's injuries included a broken pelvis, legs, ribs, fractured skull and vertebrae damage. How long has passed exactly since the last episode? Surely he'd need months to recover from those injuries!? And Roz's gp surgery are clearly inept as it took them as long as he was in hospital to process her stinky arm swab.

It would have been more believable to have had Arnott solving the case from a laptop in his hospital bed than him managing to get into work, perfectly turned out and able to function as normal. Spoilt it a bit for me really.

Plus I am annoyed at it being billed as a standalone series - and now loads of names and details about previous series have been mentioned and therefore presumably if I go back and watch the other series now I'll know who the baddies are to some extent? I am trying not to listen to names but it's not working. Grrrr.

Whywaitfortomorrow · 24/04/2017 09:27

Feeling good now because I had mentioned on other thread how Lakewell could be involved with some dodgy types and that Farmer might have been linked to a previous case. Trying to think like I think JM might think based on previous series - how dare I, absolutely no chance, now have even more questions.

I have to keep telling myself that this is still fiction...ie. people can survive severe head injuries or discharge themselves from hospital or not get noticed when they are only using one arm. I know this is made up but so brilliant.

hackmum · 24/04/2017 09:27

There’s an awful lot to tie up in the last episode:

  1. Who killed Leonie and Baswinder?
  2. Who killed Tim Ifield?
  3. What was Roz’s involvement in Ifield’s death?
  4. Who attacked Steve Arnott?
  5. Was the balaclava man who attacked Arnott the same as the other balaclava men we’ve seen?
  6. Why did Tim Ifield have a balaclava and all those weird tools?
  7. Was Hanna’s abduction staged or real?
  8. What is Nick’s involvement – is he a completely innocent party who just has the misfortune to be married to Roz, or is he up to something dodgy?
  9. Why did Maneet hand over files to Hilton? She didn’t look happy about it. Has he got something on her?
  10. What on earth is Jamie up to? Is he some kind of double agent and, if so, who for?
  11. Is Jimmy Lakewell implicated in any of the murders?
  12. Whose side is Jimmy really on – Nick’s or Roz’s?
  13. Did Michael Farmer really rape that girl, or was he set up? Possibly with the connivance of his own solicitor (Jimmy Lakewell).
  14. Who is “H”?
  15. What’s the connection between the murders in this series and the murder of Jackie Laverty in series one?
  16. Has Roz gone a bit insane as a result of the infection and amputation or is she utterly cold and calculating?
  17. What on earth has Roz done with the children?
  18. How is Roz managing to do her hair with just one hand?

Have I forgotten anything?

DubiousCredentials · 24/04/2017 09:31

I don't think Jimmy is covering for Roz because after ac12 went to interview him he called Nick before calling Roz, which suggests that is where his loyalty lies.

Whywaitfortomorrow · 24/04/2017 09:32

hackmum well done for putting that list together

Swabs do take ages to come back from processing. In my experience they start you on a broad spectrum antibiotic and change it when they know exactly what they're dealing with. But the other medical stuff has been full of holes.

hackmum · 24/04/2017 09:40

Ooh yes, good point about Jodie, Navyandwhite. Up till now I've assumed that Jodie is exactly as she seems, but the joy of LoD is that you never really know who is pretending to be something they're not. And the person you suspect of being a double agent usually isn't...

Butterymuffin · 24/04/2017 09:40

Also, why did Roz duck out of sleeping with Hilton? She made the big point of it being 'a moral question'. If she were totally calculating she would have done it to keep him on side. She seemed to think she could best him.

  • Will Nick now have to pull his fucking weight and put the bins out?
Whywaitfortomorrow · 24/04/2017 09:43

2.Who killed Tim Ifield?
3.What was Roz’s involvement in Ifield’s death?

I'm not sure if Tim's death was planned from the outset or if Roz, as we subsequently discover about her, took a situation and made a calculated decision to use it to her advantage (she didn't know then she would end up losing her hand). She wouldn't have known she was going to be pushed or hit her head. I think she went there to talk to him off the record not necessarily knowing about all of his security measures either. I don't know if she called Jodie or Jimmy. Nick said he hadn't been in because he was having a drink with Jimmy, so if Jimmy was involved, she knew her DH was lying there and then.

I can't believe that 3 minutes out of 360 holds the key to all of this storyline.

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 24/04/2017 09:44

Re the children : is it actually - sorry to be boring-- mainly that they are rarely seen and never heard because of regulations about child actors? They have to do all sorts of paperwork (which the cops in S1 wouldn't liked!) to have children as big roles, speaking lines and stuff. if they aren't all that important to the plot, they just won't use them.

That said, in S1 a large focus was put on Gates (who reminds me in so many ways of Roz's character , right down to the arrest at home) being a family man and we saw how much he did genuinely love his children. Not getting that from Roz at all.

FeralBeryl · 24/04/2017 09:48

After the ballyed man reference from another series - I am now going down the 'armed ballys killed Ifield' route.

I think Roz was told to complete certain tasks to cock up the investigation, or be killed too.

I think Jimmy Lakewell is feeding her bits of info to make her think Nick is involved so she's hidden the kids away in case anything happens to her.

I'm thinking it's getting far far too obvious for ACC Dickhead to be involved too deeply. He's an incapable, odious little man who is scrabbling to keep up, finding AC12 guilty of repeated corruption would be a feather in his cap-is this just a parallel storyline?

Jamie will be back too - he's either a plant who Hilton sent to get the info (which is why Maneet happily 'set' him up) or he'll finally find some indignation and bounce back to Ted saying 'Mother of God Big Fella-I didn't do this, where's the reciprocity?' <img loading="lazy" class="inline-flex mumsnet-emoji" alt="Wink" src="https://www.mumsnet.com/build/assets/wink-ClU7UaDM.png">

Very cross with Jed - we've been banging on to everyone that you don't need to have seen prior series to watch this one, but I'm feeling this really isn't the case now Angry

As in, I don't know who she would have called when she came to, as she must have done, when Ifield had gone DIY shopping. There is no way even she could have handled that night on her own. She didn't have a car or a phone. But she did both arms then, and we all know what she can do one handed, anything is possible with two Grin

FeralBeryl · 24/04/2017 10:07

Ooh and what if Ted has planted a smaller clip of Dot's dying declaration rather than the whole thing? Maybe there was more info on the 'real' one and he's kept hold of that just in case.

wowfudge · 24/04/2017 10:10

I think Roz has contracted MRSA from Ifield's fingers. Poetic justice there for ignoring his concerns. Gloves don't go beyond the wrist and her scratches were exposed before she stuck a plaster over them. A carrier doesn't have to be affected by it themselves.

Clawdy · 24/04/2017 10:12

Jamie will surely remember that Maneet asked for his password, and hopefully report her. Can't see it all being neatly tied up in one hour next week, but I will be so annoyed if it's left open.

Whywaitfortomorrow · 24/04/2017 10:21

Thanks for tip up thread, really interesting review DenofGeek

Dot was always one step ahead and I wouldn't be surprised if he did that deliberately to throw doubt. Like with golf tee.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 24/04/2017 10:21

They really are setting up for the next series aren't they. Whatever happens in the next episode, I predict a large dollop of frustration.

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 24/04/2017 10:25

Hmmmmm - but re the bally men

In series one, they looked so much more obviously like henchmen and gangland thugs. This one is very different. It strikes me as an oddity. They came in groups in series one, driving around - often in broad daylight- in big cars, abducting people etc

This one feels like someone who is not an actual serial killer playing dress up as what he thinks a killer should look like!

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 24/04/2017 10:27

Question - if you are dying and can barely speak, how the hell can you blink at a very precise moment in time!!??!

The fact to me that Hilton got his hands on that recording in order to incriminate Ted (and to tell Ted that is what he was doing ) suggests very very strongly to me that Hilton already knew what was on it!?

Ferrisday · 24/04/2017 10:28

Non speaking extras get paid less

Elendon · 24/04/2017 10:37

Yeah Gates really loved his children didn't he? So much so he spent time having sex with someone else other than their mum. All that bravado about dying in the Line of Duty to secure their future. Big guy.

What I do like about this series is that no one is perfect. Not even Hastings (his debts cost him his marriage).

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 24/04/2017 10:38

Thanks for the list hackmum I'm sure as a series four virgin I have more, not least, in addition to Roz doing her hair one handed, how can Steve get to work now immaculately turned out as per usual?

I've got a weird theory going round in my head, but have to stress that it's based on nothing but my imagination and not having seen previous series, might be completely off the wall, but here goes. Roz has declared, to Hilton, that she loves her children. Nick in this episode shows his concern for them, but they both seem oddly detached from them. This may be because they're just not that important to the storyline or it might be because they're not their biological children. Roz's career break of five years clearly wasn't after the birth of either of them, so what if say they're her sibling's children and that sibling was killed, possibly as a result of some gangland thing - hence Nick's question about them being 'safe'
Could there be some back story about Roz and Nick being childless highflyers in the fields of corporate law and crime and they've somehow, maybe via Jimmy, become enmeshed in something dark and deep? This would also explain Roz's comments about her giving up things for the benefit of others. When you take a career break for your own children, you probably wouldn't phrase it like that, it's your own choice to look after them, not something you see as an obligation.

While I'm here can some officianado clue me up about Hilton please. The part really isn't well acted for me, and I'm amazed how he could've risen to such a rank. There must be a lot more to him than I can get from him this series.

Whywaitfortomorrow · 24/04/2017 10:48

I watched Adrian Dunbar this morning on BBC Breakfast. A viewer called Anna had messaged in and he said 'Hello Anna' and then also mentioned in same breath, my wife's called Anna, made me chuckle, as if he had to confirm he was married when mentioning Pan's People another woman.
