Out I've watched it from the start with Lennie James and will watch the next series too. That doesn't mean to say I can't criticise it.

I'm willing to forgive unrealistic scenarios. It happens in dramas about my own job and I think: that's just entertainment and let it go.

I'll also forgive characters doing unrealistic things or clunking coincidences in order to further the plot.

I'll let Jed Mercurio off for not remembering stuff - like Ted Hastings being a Catholic and therefore unlikely to be a Freemason.

I won't let him off for consistently saying each series of LoD can be enjoyed as a stand alone series and then writing this one which went right back to key bits of the first series - lopping off fingers, women in freezers, DNA on preserved corpses, men in balaclavas...

Not to mention relying on fans to fill in major plot holes - why did Maneet turn mole? How was JamieNotJames recruited? Why didn't Ros go to the doctors with her rotting arm? How did ArnottNotArnold recover from a fractured skull, broken pelvis, broken ribs, broken arm and manage to do so well in a wheelchair but be unable to wash up?

That's the worst thing for me. Not that people enjoy it, I do too. It's just that it's being hailed as great TV when it's got more holes than my nan's doily on a Sunday afternoon teatime.

EllaHen · 01/05/2017 11:59

I agree with you Limited. I too, have watched it since the start.

However, I imagine Steve couldn't do the washing up as the sink was too high, whereas the police station will be wheelchair friendly.

And I don't think I can forgive Ted being a Mason. I love Ted. Also, the ramping up of the un-pc Ted this series was just a plot device.

My thinking about last night's episode is that although it was enjoyable, it told us nothing we didn't already know. Nothing.

hippyhippyshake · 01/05/2017 12:01

Do we know the answer to the login Jamiednotjamiet? Or does this mean he will reappear next time?

SapphireStrange · 01/05/2017 12:07

TBF, I think it's been left ambiguous about Ted Hastings being a Freemason; the only 'evidence' is that Steve thought he saw him doing a handshake, but IIRC it wasn't 100% clear.

And Hilton was probably able, by virtue of rank, to just order Maneet to turn mole on pain of losing her job. She certainly didn't look happy about doing it, and was quick to get out as soon as she could.

limitedperiodonly · 01/05/2017 12:26

And Hilton was probably able, by virtue of rank, to just order Maneet to turn mole on pain of losing her job.

Quite possibly. But my point is that we should see that. Just one three minute scene that shows Hilton exerting actual pressure on her, rather than Mercurio relying on loyal fans to fill in his blanks for something that's impossible to explain.

SapphireStrange · 01/05/2017 12:30

It's not impossible to explain –I've just had a stab!

I'm not necessarily right, but it's a conclusion that makes sense to me. Other viewers have presumably come up with conclusions that they're happy with too.

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 01/05/2017 12:32

The whole quandary about Hastings hasn't affected me, being new to Series 4 I had no idea of his back story or any preconceptions about him. For me, it's been enjoyable and great TV because it's very watchable, it had me hooked and eager for the next episode. That isn't to say that I don't have many criticisms too and it remains to be seen if any of them are cleared up next time.

Does anyone else think there has to be more to the Roz arc? I was astounded when she just broke down and 'fessed up - that's the last thing I'd have expected from her. But, as someone said, she did say her children need a parent so she may have decided to take the rap for damage limitation purposes

Definitely but I didn't see it as her breaking down and confessing, rather steeling herself in a moment of clarity and thinking, this is what I have to do.

There still has to be much more to it what with Lakewell refusing to make a statement and filling us in on how there's no safety from the crime bosses, although I hope he's wrong on that for Farmer and his Nan. As an aside, his Nan seems in good enough health, she must've been in the nursing home for some sort of recuperation.

I'm still of the opinion that there's more to the night Ifield died, I just can't see how Roz wouldn't recovered, overcome him and cleaned up all on her own.

OutToGetYou · 01/05/2017 12:34

Maybe Steve just couldn't be arsed to wash-up - I can't and I am fully able.

limitedperiodonly · 01/05/2017 12:43

Neither can I out but Steve was so ashamed of not washing up that he wouldn't allow Kate to come in.

I'm no medical expert, unlike Mercurio, but I've a feeling that recovering from major injuries such as a fractured skull, broken pelvis and broken limbs and mastering a manual wheelchair takes a bit more time than Magic Eyebrows had.

Like I said, I enjoyed it. I even enjoy pulling it to bits. The two things aren't exclusive

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 01/05/2017 12:51

Steve must have special powers of recuperation limited he's up on crutches already now.

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 01/05/2017 12:53

I'm with you Limited. As anyone on this thread knows, I am LoD obsessed and I found it unsatisfying in many ways and I thought there were plot holes - rather than things not yet resolved.

However, I thought he washing up was to signal he was not coping mentally rather than physically. The chair knocked over showed how hard it all is. Kate gave him a cuddle and all was well. Crass, yes. Over simplified, yes. But at the same time quite sensitive.

SapphireStrange · 01/05/2017 12:56

Enrique, I didn't get the impression that Farmer and his nan would be involved any further. Lakewell was just referring to the longer arc – that there is high-up and dangerous corruption from which there is no meaningful safety, and so him going into witness protection would be less safe than him going to prison.

limitedperiodonly · 01/05/2017 13:07

Crass, yes. Over simplified, yes. But at the same time quite sensitive.

Beans Kate's story arc is to clash with Steve until about ep 4. She doesn't get on with anyone whose name isn't Arnott or Hastings though there was that implausible flirtation with Dot.

I'm grateful that preggers Maneet dug up the info that she had a kid though. Until supermum Ros flung it in Kate's face I'd completely forgotten about him. Who's been looking after him since the first series?

Enrique I noticed the crutches Grin

Ceto · 01/05/2017 13:10

Not to mention relying on fans to fill in major plot holes - why did Maneet turn mole?

It may well be that there is a specific plot point around this which needs to be held back till the next series. In the meantime it's sufficient to work out that she was almost certainly either threatened or blackmailed into it.

How was JamieNotJames recruited?

Why does it matter? It wouldn't particularly add anything. If they have to give a massive back story as to how every baddy gets involved, it would become very tedious.

Why didn't Ros go to the doctors with her rotting arm?

Well, she did eventually. She presumably didn't for some time because (a) she though it would heal up on its own and (b) she didn't want awkward questions about how she did it.

How did ArnottNotArnold recover from a fractured skull, broken pelvis, broken ribs, broken arm and manage to do so well in a wheelchair but be unable to wash up?

Partly because, as pointed out, his sink isn't at wheelchair height. And probably also because he's in constant pain and exhausted, and just can't be arsed after a day pretending that he can cope just fine.

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 01/05/2017 13:10

Kate's ex husband got custody of the son.

Ceto · 01/05/2017 13:13

Wasn't Steve on crutches in the catch-up bit at the end, by which time both Lakewell and Roz had gone on trial and been convicted - therefore quite some time after the main story?

limitedperiodonly · 01/05/2017 13:25

Partly because, as pointed out, his sink isn't at wheelchair height

If only all people with disabilities had thoughtfully-designed spaces.

Look. I enjoy LoD. It's fun. I will watch the next one, but the suspension of disbelief required by this series was almost like Pam waking up from a dream in Dallas.

The idea that someone could recover from a fractured skull, broken pelvis, broken limbs and broken ribs in a short space of time is stretching it a bit from a writer with no medical background, let alone Jed Mercurio who talks about it a lot.

I enjoy it. I also enjoy poking fun at it. Unless you're Jed Mercurio's mum, you shouldn't take it personally.

limitedperiodonly · 01/05/2017 13:26

suspension of belief obviously

limitedperiodonly · 01/05/2017 13:28

Yes. From a doctor suggesting he might never walk again to being on crutches in about a year. It's like Matthew's Tingle in Downton Abbey

FeralBeryl · 01/05/2017 13:51

Just letting anyone who doesn't know - new thread is MOTHER OF GOD!!!

This one is being put in a drawer along with Roz Huntley left gloves...

I don't, I'm simply engaging in the discussion. It was you who said "It was terrible. I'm sick of Jed Mercurio" which sounds (a) personal and (b) a trifle inconsistent.

Ceto · 01/05/2017 13:58

"Might never walk again" doesn't equate to "will never walk again, or if you do, it won't be for several years". It may depend on whether nerve pathways mend or re-establish themselves - if that's the situation, they will either do it relatively quickly or not at all.

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 01/05/2017 15:12

Has everyone seen Home Alone. there are various amusing YouTube videos made my medics about how many times the crooks would die. Greta fun. And doesn't spoil my enjoyment of the film! Admittedly that's a comedy..
