I'm still not sure about the money.
She agreed to it, but I think they dropped her in it massively, just left her to defend herself. And she certainly didn't think police officers would die

ktel1 · 27/04/2017 19:52

She took the money- it wasn't planted.

Akers gave it to her and claimed it was to prove that she was committed to the plan , taking the same risk as her.
They knew she had financial troubles so were preying on that vulnerability.

She agreed to participate in the ambush but changed her mind at the last minute as you said

She was left alive so that they could pin everything on her.

She feels morally that they didn't do anything wrong.

She was trying to get rid of low life Tommy Hunter who was getting away with his crimes and had no idea that the police would also be killed.

I17neednumbers · 27/04/2017 20:05

Yes, that's what's so fascinating about Denton - even when she's in conversation alone with Steve she sounds so convincing when she accuses him again of planting the £50k. But she's lying! And then she sounds so outraged about not taking the £100k that Cottan offers!

She somehow convinced herself she did nothing wrong I think. But Cottan didn't frame her.

ktel1 · 27/04/2017 20:40

I think Keely is a very good actress and her portrayal of Denton had a lot of depth.

The writing is always the most important aspect of any drama but a good actor can add an extra dimension to the character.

They can convey their inner thoughts and feelings to the audience often without saying anything.

I can't help but wonder if Thandie Newton's portrayal of Roz, which elicits no empathy or understanding, is a reflection of the character or the actress.

We won't know that until we get the full story.

I was reading a JM interview where he was talking about the character of Ted Hastings.

He said that he originally he didn't write Ted in the way he is now but as more of a bumbling inept Inspector Clousseau character.

However when he saw how Adrian Dunbar performed he decided to change the character.

CoolCarrie · 27/04/2017 21:12

I was annoyed that Keely Hawes didn't win a BAFTA for her performance, she was brilliant in LOD & The Durrells, on itv just before LOD on Sunday. Have any of you watched Death At A Funeral which she was in? It is very very funny, ( not the American version) black comedy at its best.

ktel1 · 27/04/2017 21:30

CoolCarrie -I just found a stream for Death at a Funeral

I don't think I've seen it- I will watch it later,thanks

MarilynWhirlwindRocks · 27/04/2017 21:44

ktel,

"I can't help but wonder if Thandie Newton's portrayal of Roz, which elicits no empathy or understanding, is a reflection of the character or the actress."

Definitely the character, IMO.
Roz is so completely ruthless, humourless and icy that it's hard to relate to/ invest in her any further than how she impacts on other characters.

For me, I can't find any apparent redeeming qualities (other than ...determination? Balls of steel?). That's got to be deliberate misdirection of our sympathies, eh, Jed??

Pretty challenging to portray that persona convincingly, I would think, for someone as naturally warm and likeable as TN herself comes across in interviews.
(If you watch even a bit of "Thandie" , and compare with the Roz role, it's fair to say that's major playing against type!).

I've only seen her in 2 films, but thought she was amazing in "Beloved" and "Crash".

MarilynWhirlwindRocks · 27/04/2017 21:48

BTW, thanks for linking that JM interview from Edinburgh Film Festival!

It is a good watch.

cudbywestrangers · 27/04/2017 21:48

I've been lurking and really enjoying the series as well as the theories! Thought maybe I'd chuck my twopenneth in...

I think the big bad crime bosses are the same across all 4 series. In the past, Nick Huntley has done some dodgy legal work for them via Jimmy lakewell (think he might have been a bit of a rubbish lawyer and needed cash to fund fancy lifestyle). He's got in too deep and/ or Roz has found out and got sucked in trying to keep it hidden (hence "everything I've done is for the family" ie keep Nick earning, alive and out of jail and possibly crime bosses influenced the career break). In the separation to keep Nick safe she's been getting more and more compromised and ended up framing farmer. But is also looking for a way of the big baddies getting caught without implicating her. Maybe she thinks Hastings is involved so thinks that by taking him out of the equation she'll get some breathing space?

I think the whole thing with Hanna was staged and ifield realised there was something dodgy going on and wanted to question hanna. I cannot believe he thought roz was dead and wonder if he was actually trying to demonstrate what the girls' murderer had done and how this would be picked up by forensics rather than actually hurt or kill roz. However someone (Nick? Hanna?) Called for back up and the heavies/ clean up team got called in.

Roz hurt her arm in the scuffle, didn't get treatment and arm went rotten. Although mrsa isn't really the right bug for the way the wound behaved and smellt! Although the hospital would have wanted to keep her in longer, some antibiotics work as well orally as by iv and the main source of bugs has been removed so she should be feeling relatively better. But nowhere near as well as she is!!!

So basically it's as clear as mud! I do think Hilton is dodgy but maybe not involved with the big organised crime baddies. I can't work out why maneet is feeding him information unless she also thinks Hastings is dodgy. I'm so not sure about jamie. He's clearly been planted for a reason but he didn't put up much of a fight to stay. Hmmmmm. Jimmy is definitely a baddy but I don't think he gets his hands dirty, the balaclava man/ men will be much further down the pecking order of the organised crime thing.

I don't think Hastings is a baddie but was trying to hold onto dots declaration until there was enough evidence to get the biggest baddies sent down. Now he looks dosgy for bot sharing it and the big baddies will live to fight another series.

I've probably missed load out and have forgotten most of the early series but am obviously a bit overinvested! We're away this weekend so will have to wait until we get back to watch the finale Hmm

Martin Compston Evening Standard.

Not really a spoiler but he gives an idea of the tone of the ending and how it links with previous series and to series 5

SaintEyning · 27/04/2017 23:27

Could Bally Man be Hargreaves from MVC? He could also be involved with the dodgy offficers/Tommy Hunter network and would have the means/access to frame Michael Farmer. Also may have a hold over Hilton (who has something over Maneet - convinced her Ted is a racist misogynist and therefore corrupt in that way, she is the saviour of AC12?) and advance intel that way on where Steve was going shen he was attacked.

ktel1 · 27/04/2017 23:38

Saint- My money's on Hargreaves as the top dog within the force- office H.

ktel1 · 27/04/2017 23:46

I think the balaclava men are numerous and mostly thugs from within the gang. I don't know if the identity will prove to be important.

I don't see any of the "higher ups" within the force or the gang being involved- they would likely hire the muscle.

BoreOfWhabylon · 28/04/2017 00:35

I think this series will end with Noble Ted in disgrace and facing charges of corruption and sexual/racial discrimination.

Next series will centre on his vindication.

lampshady · 28/04/2017 08:04

I agree Bore. As it's now BBC One I think they've got a stronger remit for more of a continuation for series four and five. It'd have to move at breakneck speed to wrap everything up and we know it won't be fully concluded.

CopperRose · 28/04/2017 08:58

Noooooo!
Noble Ted is A Good Man!!!

CopperRose · 28/04/2017 08:59

I've just had a thought - is the constant spelling out of L-A-K-E-W-E-L-L a riff on Noble Ted doing everything TO THE LETTER of the law?

MarilynWhirlwindRocks · 28/04/2017 10:09

Ooh, I like that, Copper. Smile

A few Line Of Duty anagrams:

  • Def Oily Nut (Hilton)
  • Find Ye Lout (Balaclava Man)
  • Duty Felon I (Not sure, are we???)
  • Idol Yet Fun (Arnott)
  • Duty File No (Kate)
  • Do Untie Fly Blush Adrian Dunbar (NobleTed)
Elendon · 28/04/2017 11:21

Not sure those are anagrams Marilyn

An anagram of Ted Hastings would be 'dats the sings'

'Eve not tarts' is Steve Arnott

Whywaitfortomorrow · 28/04/2017 11:57

Copper THE LETTER ! Grin

BoreOfWhabylon · 28/04/2017 12:19

CopperRose Noble Ted is most definitely all that is good and noble (and haaaawt!) but my prediction is that he will be stitched up like a kipper by evil-doers.

Next series, Steve and Vicki will work (behind the scenes as someone awful* will be installed in charge of AC12) to reveal his true goodness and nobility and he will be reinstated.

*Who though? Oooh, possibly Roz if she survives this series? Or Hargreaves?

OutToGetYou · 28/04/2017 12:28

Elendon, Marilyn was saying they are all anagrams of "Line Of Duty", which they are, and then in brackets who they could refer to.

Elendon · 28/04/2017 12:30

Sorry Marilyn. Those are great anagrams of Line of Duty and mine are rubbish.

ktel1 · 28/04/2017 12:33

I think the phones and call logs could be significant. Im trying to piece it together.

An unregistered phone was found in Tim's flat.

Hana said it was Tim's phone when it was suggested but I don't know if that's the case.
I think Hana was hiding something/lying in her interview.

In fact I don't think Tim knew her or was visiting prostitutes at her flat.

The phone apparently had a log of calls between her number and an unrecognized number.

Others have pointed out that the unrecognized number also appears in the log for Roz's phone that AC-12 have

Perhaps the phone was planted in Tim's flat. It could be Roz's second phone.

The number could belong to Jimmy Lakewell or someone else from the gang and both sets of calls were made by Roz.

I don't recall if we have the timing of the calls but perhaps in Tim's flat Roz came to and made a call to that number for help.

ktel1 · 28/04/2017 12:39

I came across this that has the dialogue from all of the series and episodes in case anyone wants to check on what was said .
