Unchallenged sexism

Fl0ellafunbags · 04/07/2017 13:08

Can we maybe take a step back and remind ourselves that we're talking about a TV series here? No point taking offence over perceived sexism.

user1487175389 · 04/07/2017 13:18

It's a TV show, yes, but the role of The Doctor is a paid job like any other.

StormTreader · 04/07/2017 13:26

"When I joined the thread it was all thinly veiled Homophobic comments about Bill"

Its not homophobic to say "we'd like to see more of who Bill is as a character and a person instead of every episode having her do a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT of how she only likes WOMEN." It became like the legal disclaimer of her character, it had to happen every single week in order for her to be allowed to be a character. Even the final episode "you know how I only like girls and only people my own age"? GOSH, REALLY? You didnt mention that.

I really came to like her as a companion, her liking girls was far less memorable to me than the fact she was bolshy, unafraid to stick up for anyone who was being ignored, curious, brave, opinionated, and larger than life.

user1487175389 · 04/07/2017 13:26

And I could understand it if people were saying 'but the doctor FATHERED' a child - how the heck can he suddenly be female' - if his maleness was intrinsic to the plot. But the fact is, as far as I'm aware, the only child he has is a clone, (who's female anyway??)

abbsisspartacus · 04/07/2017 13:28

He had children on galifrey apparently

RatOnnaStick · 04/07/2017 13:29

He's a grandfather. The first Doctor's companion was Susan, his granddaughter.

chemenger · 04/07/2017 13:31

If Susan is his granddaughter then he must have fathered her father or mother (unless timelord biology is very different).

user1487175389 · 04/07/2017 13:32

I disagree that there was a big announcemwnt every week about how she likes women. I think it was well woven into the thread of the series and they were brave to show that it isn't all parades and rainbows once you come out - there's a lot of loneliness and uncertainty for many people - particularly lesbian and bisexual women.

user1487175389 · 04/07/2017 13:34

And yes he did have children on gallifrey, I'd forgotten - but he also made a point of saying how gender (or sex!) isn't a thing there the way it is here, the other week.

chemenger · 04/07/2017 13:39

I would prefer the next Doctor to be male. I don't understand why having a preference makes me sexist. If it is then preferring a female Doctor is discriminatory against men. I think the Doctor reminds me of many male engineers that I know, less so the female engineers and for me the role would change too much if a woman took it.

Personally I hope that the whole thing is a bluff and that Peter Capaldi continues as the Doctor with Missy as his companion. That would be my dream scenario. Also that they conduct every episode in thick Glaswegian patois, just for fun.

StormTreader · 04/07/2017 13:42

There are established timelords that are mentioned as swapping sexes between reincarnations and it doesnt seem that remarkable to anyone.

The Doctor had a daughter called Jenny, didn't he? (Georgia moffet)

user1487175389 · 04/07/2017 13:59

OK I'm genuinely intrigued, how do female engineers differ from male ones chemenger? I have daughters who want Stem careers - maybe you can help me prepare them?!

chemenger · 04/07/2017 14:55

In my experience female engineers are less inclined to get caught up in the minutiae of technical detail but to take a more holistic overview. They are less geeky, more pragmatic. Perhaps the process of solving a problem is more interesting to us rather than just the technical solution. I think its definitely true that women bring something different to engineering which is valuable. Its not fashionable to say that men and women think in different ways but in engineering I do feel that there is a difference and the two views are synergistic. In most of the group projects I have supervised female students have taken a lead, managing the group's progress and keeping the group together. All male groups tend to fragment into a set of individual projects, looking for individual glory. I've never had an all female group. I would encourage your daughters to go for STEM careers, they will find the door wide open for them.
Maybe its because I don't see the Doctor as a team player that I see him as male.

StormTreader · 04/07/2017 15:46

I would suggest that some of the above is due to the differences in how girls and boys are socialised and raised with different expectations - girls have a vastly stronger emphasis placed on them to "be nice and get along" in my experience, whereas boys are given much more leeway to be solitary and just do what interests them if thats what they prefer.

chemenger · 04/07/2017 16:05

Maybe so, but it means that mixed teams of engineers are stronger than single sex ones (with the proviso that I have't had an all female group to see that that's like). Having said that the "managing" role that I describe female students taking in group work is often quite the opposite of being nice and getting on Smile.
There is research which shows that girls perform less strongly in some aspects of engineering education because they are less cooperative in sharing. Male students will help each other out more by giving others their work than female students. Male students are much more tolerant of others copying stuff, which can mean that female students miss out on the passing round of coursework to classmates that goes on.

While this is interesting is derailing the thread and I apologise!

Funnyfarmer · 04/07/2017 16:15

I've just thought. When Heather pooped up and said basically she could save Bill, bring her back to life, and basically do anything. Wonder why she never asked her to save the doctor? She just left him seemingly dieing on the tardis floor

OP posts:
Funnyfarmer · 04/07/2017 16:15

poped not pooped. SorryBlush

OP posts:
chemenger · 04/07/2017 17:52

Is it not because in episode 1 Heather became the Pilot and Bill became the Passenger, that was the link, so she's only interested in saving Bill so they can travel.

Funnyfarmer · 04/07/2017 22:01

You'd think think bill would have least asked. I would have if my best friend had just died then some girl who was obviously into me said she could rearrange atoms to bring people back to life.
Also (Sorry I'm in a bit pick mood)
When river shot the dr (day of the moon/wedding of river song)
She said she shot him during his regeneration process so that would kill him dead. No regeneration. But didn't that cyberman shoot him during his regeneration?
And while we're on the subject why did Matt Smith start to regenerate at all? He had no regenerations left.

OP posts:
RustyBear · 04/07/2017 22:28

The Time Lords gave the Eleventh Doctor a new regeneration cycle, (like they did for the Master so he could help them in the Time War, but he ran away and became human as Professor Yana). Apparently no-one knows how many regenerations this new cycle has.

Funnyfarmer · 04/07/2017 22:34

But he was shot on lake silencio before the timelords granted his regenerations
Plus. He was a robot

OP posts:
RustyBear · 05/07/2017 01:19

The robot was shot. The doctor was inside, miniaturised.

Funnyfarmer · 05/07/2017 07:11

Still doesn't explain the regeneration. Unless the doctor and tesselector cooked it up for effect.? But they could have mentioned it.
Im always making up my own stories to fill on plot holes. Grin
