I think people find the older ones more scary because they was children when they watched them.

SoupDragon · 26/05/2017 07:57

I agree. I find some of the current ones scary but in an "I know this isn't real" way.

woodhill · 26/05/2017 08:22

Yes true, I was terrified as a dc and used to hide behind the sofas.

Mind you The talons of win chan & seeds of doom were scary.

Wish BBC would rerun a series.

Addley · 26/05/2017 11:00

They might seem silly but the original original Cybermen creep me the fuck out more than any other incarnation. It's the way they talk. The mouth opens in a big O and without moving, the generated voice that's just wrong emanates from the speech circuits… The bandaged mummified look, too… like someone's gone through so many replacement and medical procedures that they are No Longer Human AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

They're eerie, in a way no monsters in recent Who have been.

Addley · 26/05/2017 11:07

The newer ones look like Jeeps.

WorshipTheGourd · 26/05/2017 14:46

Looking forward to tomorrow. I luffs PC.

Stormtreader · 26/05/2017 15:20

Definitely agree, the Cybermen are my favourite Dr Who villains but the original ones are FAR more scary than the new ones, the sing-song voices and the bandage-like masks are just creepy.

Crabcanon · 26/05/2017 19:26

I agree that some of the monsters were more scary when we watched as kids but I agree that there is something very unnerving about the original Cybermen. The new ones look quite chunky and approachable I think. And even now the Dalek voice still raises my heartbeat a bit. It's the way that the way they chant "Exterminate" starts to sound more and more frantic and hysterical the more they say it. I have to say though that I don't like their hovering ability. Especially the way they go upstairs. It looks really daft and takes away some of their scariness imo.

Addley · 26/05/2017 19:43

I grew up without Doctor Who :(

QuiQuaiQuod · 26/05/2017 21:05

My favourite line in 'the green death' is when Jo Grant says into her walkie talkie (and handy she happened to have a screwdriver on her to fix it!)'' Im up on the slag heap with the Proffessor''! Cracks me up every time!

Happened to channel flick last night to the Persuaders as its my second favourite theme tune everrrrrr, don't usually watch the whole programme, but Ive noticed some stories were written by Terry nation, and last night PATRICK TROUGHTON was in it! Fan girl just went all 'teenage'! and he looked just like he was as Salamander in 'the enmeny of the world1'

Poster who loves Jamie, Frazer Hines was on vintage tv today choosing his fave songs. he was lovely. music taste not bad either!

Is that Peri in the Hammonds bedroom fitted wardrobe advert?

agree about the floating Daleks. not scary any more. Tardis

Crabcanon · 26/05/2017 22:28

qui where do u watch old episodes on? I'd like to watch some of the ones I watched growing up just to see what they're like all these years later.

Funnyfarmer · 27/05/2017 08:55

Saturday again already! I'm super exited.
Apparently tonight has had to be edited because it made a few references to terrorism. Hopefully it won't have ruined anything

QuiQuaiQuod · 27/05/2017 19:32

Crab weve collected all the dvds we can lay our hands on. still getting through them! theyre quite reasonably priced at HMV.

Only ones missing are the 1st and 2nd Doc ones that are globally missing.

we have a DW weekend most weekends, a WHOFEST as we call them. (due to disabilities and unable to go out at these times).

watched the DAemons and the sea Devils today, our 'go to' faves.

they were showing some old who on the horror channel a while back but that seems to have stopped. That's what got me into classic WHo. Tardis.

Im a bit meh TBH about tonights as its a continuation of last weeks and we didn't really like it. lets see.

prettybird · 27/05/2017 21:05

Dh and I are hating the current series: it just seems to be a mash-up of lots of recent story lines (with a bit of Torchwood thrown in) Sad

Barely managed to watch to the end of the current episode, we were getting so annoyed with it.

And next week's looks like it will be yet more derivative twaddle Sad

Ds is refusing to watch this series at all and instead is re-watching all the series from the reboot. Matt Smith is his favourite but he liked David Tennant and Christopher Ecclestone too. Donna (Catherine Tate) was/is all of ours favourite companion.

Crabcanon · 27/05/2017 21:21

Qui thanks for info. I don't have a disc drive on anything though :(

I really enjoyed tonight's epi Blush.

RatOnnaStick · 27/05/2017 23:10

I've been really enjoying this series but what the hell was that pile of shite I just watched?

Mind you, all the 'save the world' story arcs have been dull from Tennant onwards. As soon as it gets too serious it loses its appeal and becomes dead boring.

iklboo · 28/05/2017 12:27

Really didn't enjoy last night. It just seemed like a 'meh' filler episode.

SoupDragon · 28/05/2017 13:37

I enjoyed it.

am I right in thinking that the character of Erica was played without any mention of her achondroplasia?

Addley · 28/05/2017 14:18

Yeah, I don't think it was made pertinent to the plot in any way? Which made a nice change from the usual. Important to have characters who are disabled or in another underrepresented group, where that isn't a plot point or a major part of their character. Hopefully this will stop being something worth commenting on in the near future.

QuiQuaiQuod · 28/05/2017 16:06

that was a yawnfest last night. only good bit were the scenes with the Doctor and Erica. they were good together. Id like her to be a companion. Bills getting on my nerves now. I don't know why.

Im Sad its going downhill again. started offwell enough.

Same IMO with the Tennant and Smith stories, let down by poor writing, unnecessary plotlines and too much wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff.

St the end of the day it was conceived as a family programme with the onus on children- not quite cbeebies age, but cbbc onwards- more Sarah Jane Adventures with an extra kick for the adults.

Its too -rallying for ratings now, and that's disappointing IMO.

Im TOO into the classic Who now and seeing the difference in the storytelling and acting and characters I suppose.

I got into Who in the 1st place with Ecclestone, but after him, it all went tits up-or down- with only a few exceptions.

But I adore Peter Capaldi and I absolutely loved Matt Smith. Just not the stories. Tardis.

Crabcanon · 28/05/2017 18:03

I was very surprised they managed to resist the temptation there. Bearing in mind that Bill is gay don't you know and also black and we aren't often allowed to put these things to one side no matter how irrelevant they might be

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/05/2017 22:52

I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to finding out what happens next.

Funnyfarmer · 28/05/2017 23:30

Why is bills race and sexuality such a big issue.? Nobody batted an eye lid that other companions were openly heterosexual from the beginning on there tenures.
Marthers's etnicisity was drawn upon on several occasions . But was never mentioned. Rose was referred to as a"yellow girl" on more than one occasion.
The fact that Amy was ginger and Scottish was a poked at a few times.
Bill has a crush on one girl and goes on one date and it's "getting shoved down our throat" her race is brought up twice and the BBC are accused of being overly PC.
Is it because she's gay and black? Are people just not ready for that yet?

OP posts:
Funnyfarmer · 28/05/2017 23:38

Dr who has had a deaf actor in the past and trans actress. They also didn't have big flashing arrows around them. So I'm not really surprised that the character of Erica didn't either.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 28/05/2017 23:53

I was surprised. It's not that there weren't "big flashing arrows" Hmm it's that it wasn't mentioned nor alluded to at all. Which I thought was rather marvellous.
