BBC dramatisation based on the kidnapping of Shannon Matthews. Starts Tuesday 7th February 9pm, starring Sheridan Smith.

Obviously a horrendous crime against a young child so I wasn't sure I'd want to watch, but it looks like it focuses on friends of the mother who headed up the search and barely features the child herself.

I love Sheridan Smith too so will give it a go.

You're* sorry

Maudlinmaud · 09/02/2017 09:21

My thoughts on the Julie portrayal and her pov are that if enough people blow smoke up your ass, pat you on the back and don't challenge you. Then you are unaware of how your actions come across outside your comfort zone.

1happyhippie · 09/02/2017 09:41

I can't believe it took them so long to arrest her tbh. Her behaviour was so strange. She was seen laughing and joking away from the cameras.
It don't know how your supposed to act if your daughter goes missing, and I'm sure some appear to 'cope' better than others, but her behaviour and odd comments was very telling!
The comment about Shannon being famous was one that jumped right out at me. That and the frequent mention of the mcanns.
How did they think they would get away with it? If Shannon was hidden away by a relative it wouldn't be believable that he 'found' her.

MrsJayy · 09/02/2017 09:49

They probably were investigating before they arrested her I guess the police had their reasons can you be rearrested for the same crime in England?

x2boys · 09/02/2017 09:55

when my sil died suddenly acouple of years ago leaving three children there were a couple of 'julies' they were the ones contacting the local paper to remember 'their friend' they organised a family fun day to raise money for the children and gave statements to the police i have no doubt their intentions were good but it did appear they were revelling in the attention a bit as there were loads of 'your so amazing' comments on facebook it was quite sickening really.

OneWithTheForce · 09/02/2017 10:41

I think karen was such a neglectful parent that the police etc were probably unsurprised at her behaviour. She didn't even know how many children she had fgs so she would struggle to present as the gushing mother. She doesn't know what that looks like.

IHaveBrilloHair · 09/02/2017 10:49

I've known a Julie too, very helpful when there's people around to watch, but less so when no one is.
I wonder how much she helped out before Shannon went missing

HalfShellHero · 09/02/2017 11:24

I did wonder how they were planning to carry it all off their hardly gonna give the mother the reward Confused or the step dads uncle..

OneWithTheForce · 09/02/2017 11:25

Was it really her job to help out before Shannon went missing? She had her own family with its own problems. Also, karen Matthews was beyond help from neighbours. Social services couldn't even put right her neglectful parenting. People step in in a crisis. It's what happens in families and communities. They shouldn't be held accountable for not being the life vein of the community before. Everyone is just trying to get on as best they can.

Soubriquet · 09/02/2017 11:37

I've just watched it now

Cringed at a couple of parts but I thought it wasn't portrayed well enough.

It's hard to believe this really happened.

That poor girl. I do hope she hasn't watched this

hudyerwheesht · 09/02/2017 11:38

optimist give Chavs a go - it is easier reading than The Establishment and it actually starts with the difference between the coverage, etc of the Shannon Matthews case - even before the truth came out - compared with that of the McCanns.

NotJanine · 09/02/2017 12:43

I've read about the 2 cases in Chavs, although it was a few years ago, I remember it being very easy to read and I found it interesting.

I think Julie has suggested that Karen was trying to get her kids away from the stepdad (a convicted paedophile).

HalfShellHero · 09/02/2017 13:00

A lot of Karens boyfriends had been sex offenders hadnt they?

Cathelpplease · 09/02/2017 13:12

Julie visited Karen in prison for four years after she was convicted. Supposedly because she wanted to hear the truth. If suggest it's more likely she didn't want to lose her limelight of being on the inside of events.

JustAnotherSilentOldNumber · 09/02/2017 13:18

I can't help but think this is giving Karen more much wanted attention and has made her "famous".

neveradullmoment99 · 09/02/2017 13:20

think Julie has suggested that Karen was trying to get her kids away from the stepdad (a convicted paedophile).

I read recently that Shannon was drugged and kept in the house for days. Not sure that the fact she was protecting her children stacks up at all.

Destinysdaughter · 09/02/2017 13:24

Impressed with SS playing a role where she has to look so rough!

HalfShellHero · 09/02/2017 13:52

Why would she leave her other kids with Craig?

MrsJayy · 09/02/2017 14:52

Why wouldn't she leave the other kids she didn't seem to give a toss about her childrens safety

eddiemairswife · 09/02/2017 15:08

Did she know Craig was a sex offender? I thought he was arrested after Sharon went missing. Some of you are being very hard on Karen. She seems to be inadequate rather than cruel, and probably didn't think through the consequences of Sharon's disappearance.

MrsJayy · 09/02/2017 15:14

Drugging your kid isn't inadequate parenting come on now.

Cathelpplease · 09/02/2017 15:15

She happily let her child be drugged and abducted for 20 days. I'd say people can be harsh.

JustAnotherSilentOldNumber · 09/02/2017 15:15

She seems to be inadequate rather than cruel

Really? Hmm

Glastonbury · 09/02/2017 15:17

The 999 call always bugs me. The operator says "What do they call her?" instead of "What is her name?"

OneWithTheForce · 09/02/2017 15:25

She seems to be inadequate rather than cruel

She took her child to be drugged and tethered by her wrist to a roof beam for almost 4 weeks (Christ knows how long they planned to keep her there)

and probably didn't think through the consequences of shannon's disappearance

Shannons kidnapping. Shannon didn't disappear. She was kidnapped by her mother and held hostage by her mother's lover.
