BBC dramatisation based on the kidnapping of Shannon Matthews. Starts Tuesday 7th February 9pm, starring Sheridan Smith.

Obviously a horrendous crime against a young child so I wasn't sure I'd want to watch, but it looks like it focuses on friends of the mother who headed up the search and barely features the child herself.

I love Sheridan Smith too so will give it a go.

Can I ask when the second one is ?? Watching episode 1 tonight . Can't see 2 , it's not next week is it ?? Normally these 2 parters are the day after the other .

southeastdweller · 08/02/2017 20:21

It's on again next Tuesday.

Bedsheets4knickers · 08/02/2017 20:24

Aw man , might just wait to watch them both then . I'm so impatient ha

BitOfFun · 08/02/2017 20:28

No worries, HalfShell- I'm Northern myself, and like to think I'm strong at least sometimes Grin.

Optimist1 · 08/02/2017 20:43

Without wanting to steer the thread into dangerous waters, am I alone in thinking that the massive publicity, fundraising and reward that accompanied the more famous child disappearance case less than a year before were the prime motivators for Karen and the uncle? For them the amounts of money involved must have been very tempting, but they lacked the sense to think through the logistics and consequences of their plan.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 08/02/2017 20:44

Sadly I doubt it was sensationalised at all,I think it was probably just like that and worse!

Julie is just a busy body seeking the limelight.

I must be the only person alive who can't bear SS,she makes my toes curl and not in a good way!Grin

WRT Shannon's hair analysis it shows she was drugged during school holidays- presumably to keep her quiet.

Just awful.

OneWithTheForce · 08/02/2017 20:47

optimist I think you're probably spot on with that TBH. It was noted that karen said a couple of times that Shannon was like Madeline McCann and there were comparisons made by the family between the two cases. If it wasn't their motivation then fair enough but Madeline McCann was not very far from their thoughts at the time.

TheSecretMrsFairbrother · 08/02/2017 20:48

Dame You're not alone. I watched this despite SS not because of her. Totally overrated in my opinion.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 08/02/2017 20:49

I thought it was their motivation and that was the whole point?

BrightonBelleCat · 08/02/2017 21:24

Can anyone link to the documentary where they assessed Karen's body language?

BitOfFun · 08/02/2017 21:41
.
KenDoddsDadsDog · 08/02/2017 21:51

I remember very clearly the"it's all round asdas" as people ran into the house . It was on sky news - someone later explained that it would be the absolute hub of the estate.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 08/02/2017 21:53

It's a new one called Faking It : Tears of a crime. It covered a few different cases and was on in January .

CantstandmLMs · 08/02/2017 21:58

Her reaction when she identified Shannon! "Can I go home now?" And it still took ages for them to arrest her?!

HalfShellHero · 08/02/2017 22:01

Its good that I watched that although I wish it could have analysed the whole of that tv appeal ...and how it was so deeply wierd...Confused ....a language expert picked up on something I picked up on " your dad's here...hes even looking for ya' Confused along with everything else I suspect he was a largely a bit of a deadbeat, which is how with mothers like Karen, people like Craig with their own agendas fill in the cracks...

neveradullmoment99 · 08/02/2017 22:08

I thought the acting was quite believable. I thought maybe Karen Matthews actually acted that strangely during the whole thing. Is that not what gave her away? I do admit i feel uneasy about the whole story being dramatised. I can't help but think that in a way Karen was enjoying the limelight. It does seem a bit wrong dramatising it. I did consider not watching it.

Chelazla · 08/02/2017 22:09

I think Bit of fun and lulu are both spot on. I also think, If Julie had loads of input I'm shocked because I thought she came across awfully. I grew up on an estate similar to Moreside and she would 100% have been seen as one of the better ones. I think attitude often is if you aren't actively hurting your children you're fine. These women do enable each other "you're a good mum". Well actually you really aren't!

ph0ebe · 08/02/2017 22:42

I watched the documentary on YouTube in which Julie said she had no idea why they did it. She thought not money because how would they have found' her. She thought it was for attention Confused

DeleteOrDecay · 08/02/2017 22:48

Just watched the first part tonight and found it weirdly fascinating. Karen seemed spot on to me, and yes I really believe people like her do exist. That poor child, I hope she's doing well now.

Bestthingever · 08/02/2017 22:50

I hate it when people say 'you're a good mum'. Wtf is the definition of that? I heard it a few times in last night's programme. (It annoys me even more when someone is described as a good dad btw because the standard is even lower for that!)

thegreylady · 08/02/2017 22:58

They actually approached the MM trust fund and asked for money. Kate McCann wanted to give them £25000 but they were advised not to. I got that from the Rose Martin book.

HelenaDove · 08/02/2017 23:06

Optimist Owen Jones explores the class issues between the two cases in his book..........Chavs. The Demonization of the Working Classes.

Optimist1 · 08/02/2017 23:51

Thanks for the book title, Helena - I was just about to order a copy when I saw that the author also wrote The Establishment and How They Get Away with It, which I found really heavy going! Didn't place the order, but I understand the sentiments and may read it at some point in the future.

OneWithTheForce · 09/02/2017 00:26

If Julie had loads of input I'm shocked because I thought she came across awfully.

TBH I'm not sure if she will have been aware of a) how she would have been portrayed and b) how she would have been perceived.

MrsJayy · 09/02/2017 09:03

In the past i have worked with women where you are a good mum is thrown around when i heard it on the programme my stomach churned. They all defend and protect each other,
