Endeavour - new series

A new series of 'Endeavour' starts tonight. According to the review in the paper there's a link to the very first Morse ('The Dead of Jericho') in this episode as it was aired 30 years ago! As the weather was miserable this morning and I had knitting to do, I watched that Morse episode to remind myself of the story/characters and also to laugh and cringe at the fashions of the time.

He ends up alone but has a few brushes with old flames.

CoolCarrie · 31/01/2017 14:10

He has lady friends throughout the Morse series, but always ends up on his own, except for Lewis. The last episode, The Remorseful Day, is very moving. John Thaw reminds me of my late father in law, very similar in appearance. Goodnight Mr Tom was one of his best performances, and a real tearjerker.

And Sheila Hancock, who was in this last episode, is John Thaw's widow. (Abigail is his daughter by his first marriage.)

I just re-watched the pilot which is on ITV player. There's a nice moment when Morse first meets the journalist, she asks whether they've met before, he says he doesn't think so, and she says something like "In another life, maybe."

Nice touch! Is that what they meant when they said this series would nod towards the actual Morse programmes, I wonder.

Megatherium · 31/01/2017 15:16

There have been a number of areas when there has been an obvious connection with the Morse series - apart from characters like the pathologist and Superintendent Strange, there has been his developing love for Jags and beer, and the episodes about freemasonry etc.

TheAntiBoop · 31/01/2017 15:26

Shaun Evans got very shirty when asked about the tributes to morse in the show. He said it wasn't a tribute show and shouldn't be seen as such or something

LIZS · 31/01/2017 15:28

He has deliberately not watched the original series so his performance can be treated independently.

CoolCarrie · 31/01/2017 16:45

There was a glimpse of John Thaw in the mirror of a Jaguar at the very end of the pilot episode of Endeavour, nice touch I thought.

Megatherium · 31/01/2017 18:34

It always bemuses me that they still try the occasional big climax where in other circumstances we might wonder whether the main character is going to be killed, leave the police force or whatever. We know that they can't have either happening so it does rather kill the suspense.

Just watched the last one and am sad it was the last one of the series. Though the chase through the nuclear power station was weird. Do we reckon that Endeavour and Thursday are going to die of lukieamia [sp]? In the next series?? The way they walked around the place was completely unrealistic. Not to mention him throwing that little bomb in a bucket of 'nuclear' waste\water WTF? And he survived !!

CoolCarrie · 01/02/2017 12:12

It doesn't always ring true, but that last one had almost shades of The Wicker Man about it. I really hope they never kill Fred off at all, cos I love Roger, he is such a brilliant actor in everything he is in, a classy guy, and Shaun is excellent too. Looking forward to the next series

OneThingAndThenTheNext · 01/02/2017 13:07

LIZS the village is Hambleden in the Chilterns.

ppeatfruit · 01/02/2017 13:20

TheAnti Hello btw Grin (waves). But the music esp. at the end, which is lovely with the morse code in it, is by the composer who worked on Morse and is the same I think!!

Shaun is being a touch naive IMO.

TheAntiBoop · 01/02/2017 13:39

Hello! Nice to see you have good taste in tv as well as radio!

Isn't Shaun considerably older than morse is supposed to be? It is morse supposed to be older than I'm giving him credit for?

I guess there is a difference between having a show that is based on the same characters as morse and a tribute show. Shaun Evans is very anti the latter but it doesn't seem that the producers agree!!

And agree with pp that constantly putting morse in peril doesn't bring too much dramatic tension as we all know he survives!!

So Morse returned to Oxford from London at the beginning of the original series. Do we know how long he was in London for?

ppeatfruit · 01/02/2017 17:51

Here we are doing the same thing with Morse! What surpised me most about the debacle in the Nuclear Power Station was the high standard of the rest of the programme, I didn't notice any gaping holes in the rest of it. The writers or producers must have been asleep at the end. I must admit I do enjoy looking out for mistakes!

Megatherium · 01/02/2017 18:12

We know that Morse can't die of leukaemia because he has to survive to become John Thaw Smile

I had the impression that that was the last we'll see of Inspector Thursday, which is a shame as I really like the character and the way Roger Allam plays him. I vaguely remember references in the original series to another cop who was an influence on Morse - perhaps he'll appear?

diddl · 02/02/2017 19:25

So will the next series have a stint in London do we think?

TheAntiBoop · 02/02/2017 20:03

How long is Morse in London before his return as John thaw?

diddl · 02/02/2017 20:08

No idea.

Did he even go?

Won't be the same without Roger Allam & Oxford!

TheAntiBoop · 02/02/2017 20:09

I'm sure in the first episode of Morse he appears on his first day having hot back from working in London. That's why Lewis didn't know him

CoolCarrie · 02/02/2017 20:54

Does that mean this is the last Endeavour? I am sure the voice over guy said it would be back again later on this year. They could make the same amount of episodes as Morse and Lewis which would be great.

LIZS · 02/02/2017 20:55

There is due to be another 6 part series
