Endeavour - new series

[Iwantacampervan]

A new series of 'Endeavour' starts tonight. According to the review in the paper there's a link to the very first Morse ('The Dead of Jericho') in this episode as it was aired 30 years ago! As the weather was miserable this morning and I had knitting to do, I watched that Morse episode to remind myself of the story/characters and also to laugh and cringe at the fashions of the time.

I don't really understand the Joan story line. I don't get why she's being mean to her parents. Have I completely missed something??

She's rebelling after the bank robbery.

Probably typical of the era too,rebelling against the 'old' ways of marriage,settling down etc..........

Morse saw him remove a wedding ring last week before entering the flat.

Ha knew she was pregnant as she left Morse' s flat, they gave her an obvious bump.

Son went off on national service.

Reckon the married fell told Joan to get out after her dad beat him up so she threw herself down the stairs and then gave morse's number than phone home.

I think she might have been pregnant, because the doctor spoke to Morse about still being young; he probably thought Morse was boyfriend or husband.
She must have been seeing this man before she left home. I hope we learn more in the next series.

That's why she couldn't come how to her parents , or indeed marry morse.

Yes pregnancy definitely confirmed although unclear how her accident happened. Still don't get how she was having the affair pre running away though. When she was socialising with the would be bank robbers was married man there?

I don't think she was seeing the married chap before she moved to leamington. The first episode was two weeks after the bank raid (they referenced this). Bank raid was summertime and last one was autumn. Plus the 4 episodes make more sense spread out over a couple of months (in my mind :)

Yeah I don't think she was seeing this bloke before - the episodes are surely spread over a long time frame. Mrs Thursday has gone slowly downhill over time as Joan has failed to make contact.

Loved Sheila Hancock in this episode.

Maybe. I was surprised when they referenced her being away for weeks when I thought it must have been months

I don't think she turned down his proposal because of the pregnancy. She doesn't want to become like her parents and that is kind of what he was offering

So should we assume Morse has gone off to London, as he was a sergeant by the end of the episode?

I think she was tempted by the proposal for a moment, because that would have solved the pregnancy dilemma, on one sense. Although if she had married him while pg with another mans child and not told him, he could have got the marriage annulled.

I agree she doesn't want a life like her parents. And of course we know that she and morse would not have been suited anyway.

the journalist / reporter throughout this series, is John Thaw's daughter, isn't she?
