My mum was only waxing lyrical about the young pope at the weekend. She was educated in an all girls catholic school by nuns very much a lapsed catholic now so I would imagine it resonates more with her! Some of the childhood tales she tells are horrendous! Confused

Already counting down to next episode of the missing on Wednesday!

moojangles · 14/11/2016 18:11

Watched and enjoyed both kezia but cannot wait for The Missing

moojangles · 14/11/2016 18:12

I meant kazza.... shuffles off to find glasses

Rhubarb01 · 14/11/2016 19:47

I watched both Kazza. I enjoyed 'Close to the Enemy' more if I am honest. I'm not sure where it's going. seems a bit cloak and dagger and his other stuff has been a bit quirky so it intrigues me.

Someone started a thread on 'My Mother and Other Strangers' and a few of them said what I was thinking when I watched it which was that the main female character has some annoying mannerisms - watch her eyes! I haven't warmed to her yet. Just to pick a hole in it the way that we would with OG - in the very first minute the old man voice over from the present day said his thoughts returned to the summer of 1943 and then up flashed the date on screen 'October 1943' - hardly summer with everyone in coats, hats and scarves and the trees all bare. Apart from that it was quite good. I'm intrigued however, to know how the English woman ended up with the Irish man - they don't seem matched. Worth watching though.

Good spot rhu!

moojangles · 14/11/2016 20:59

Glad you are going to see your mum over Christmas Ice it must be hard being so far away, but you know she is being well looked after. I watched both programmes and enjoyed them but I never seem to get as involved as I did with OG in fact I don't remember being so involved with a tv programme before. Probably because I never had anyone like you all to talk to. Thinking of everyone in NZ and hoping things will now calm down

I should say read as I have only just delurked! Did you see in the papers!! That MK Is looking to buy a house in South Africa for the filming next year

kazzaD66 · 14/11/2016 21:34

Thanks for the feedback on the programmes. I assume you're watching Children in Need mooj I'm fast forwarding through some of it but just had a giggle at the Janet and John story. I always had to stop what I was doing and turn the radio up when that came on. BrilliantGrinBlush

moojangles · 14/11/2016 21:46

Yep. I never realised Take That ever looked & did that

Ilovelblue · 14/11/2016 22:01

kazza I loved the Janet and John stories. A work colleague of mine lent me the first CD they did and I had to pull in to the side of the road with one of the stories as I was laughing so much, I nearly crashed the car. When it was my 50th birthday, she got hold of one of the books and somehow (via her sister I seem to recall) got the author to sign it. He even made a comment about not crashing the car. I thought it was a lovely gesture.

I too watched both those programmes you mentioned. I quite liked them both but like Rhu was curious as to how the English woman (Mrs Coyne?) ended up with the chauvinistic Irish landlord. I suppose times were different then and that sort of chauvinism was the norm.

Ilovelblue · 14/11/2016 22:13

Can I ask a question? I think some of you have been watching that programme on Channel 4 about the SAS selection process. In my deluded little mind, I always thought guys would join the army then either be selected to join the SAS or then go through the selection process, having basic army experience (and I promise this was long before Fingers decided he wanted to join the Paras). As I only started watching last week and it's finished this week (and I am not quite interested enough to bother catching the rest on iPlayer), can somebody explain how it started as they seemed to be a motley crew of civilians with no army experience.

kazzaD66 · 14/11/2016 22:53

I think I heard somewhere that they've recently released a compilation cd of the J & J stories for children in need. Something to listen to when you need a bit of cheering up Grin

Rhubarb01 · 14/11/2016 22:54

ilove I haven't watched but I think it's a sort of game show - if you like your challenges like that. I think the selectors are ex-SAS types and it's to see if you are tough enough although I' asking myself why??

I think you're right and the real life SAS have to apply from regular regiments. I don't think you can just go straight into special forces without military training/background - well I jolly well hope not!

Rhubarb01 · 14/11/2016 23:01

Anyway Elvis was at Sandhurst with CJ before he joined special forces wasn't he? I still find it hard to believe Elvis is a Sandhurst type - not complaining though Grin.

moojangles · 14/11/2016 23:21

Can't sleep. As far as I understand... SAS programme, staff are all ex SAS or SBS. You have to apply to go on show, pretty sure there's quite a rigourous physical & mental process.
In RL, SF applicants are current serving personnel.

Ilovelblue · 14/11/2016 23:27

Of course Rhu and glad we are of the same opinion. Naturally, OG is our benchmark, our 'go to' reference for all things military!

Must say I can't imagine Elvis at Sandhurst either. He's too much of a maverick. Don't see him conforming at all really.

Why I didn't twig it was an extreme reality show, I have no idea. That would explain why there was an internet entrepreneur and trainee dentist in it!

Ilovelblue · 14/11/2016 23:31

We crossed posts mooj but thank you. No idea why anyone would want to subject themselves to all that though. Must surely be a macho thing.

....in fact are there any women in the SAS? I've never given it any thought.

Rhubarb01 · 14/11/2016 23:36

ooh now there's a nice little prequel idea - Carry on Sandhurst starring Lieutenant Sternface and Lieutenant M'Adbastard. Sounds like a job for woof.

Rhubarb01 · 14/11/2016 23:45

Isn't everything open to women now including front line infantry? If so, wouldn't that include Special Forces provided you pass the selection tests with no allowances being made - that's the same for the front line roles. There must be some women out there physically able and crazy enough to want to do it - hard to believe but good luck if they want to. (Remember Demi Moore in GI Jane?)

kuiakaituhi · 15/11/2016 06:34

Re the pope programme couldn't be more different from Father TED. Brilliant demolition job on the Vatican instead

Sounds like Jen's mum and I come from similar backgrounds

Ilovelblue · 15/11/2016 08:05

I fear we've lost Woof, don't you Rhu? Either thar or she's kidnapped Poldark, CJ, Elvis and heaven knows who else and is enjoying herself immensely!

Ilovelblue · 15/11/2016 08:06

that

MaddieMoo82 · 15/11/2016 08:13

Morning! Creeping back if that's ok ladies? Life is a bit mega busy at the mo and had some stuff going on which needed to sort and didn't feel I had much to add so took a little break. Hope everyone's ok and glad you are safe kuia and trish.

Been rubbish on the Tv front, only really managed to watch poldark but have lots of things recorded on the box in the hope that one day they'll be time to watch them.

Anyway must go, it's gone 8 and I haven't even had a coffee yet!!

moojangles · 15/11/2016 09:00
