Had a look but couldn't see another thread.

Anyone else watched any? Just seen the first episode and can't make my mind up. I'm ambivalent towards the monarchy but the production seems sumptuous. It's nice seeing all the 40's/50's fashions though.

How do they get the buildings to look so realistic? No royal involvement yet they drive into Buck Pal and C.House etc.

Is it all green screen?

Seeing the cosy living room in C.House looked so similar to when we saw it recently when the Obamas visited Kate and William. It literally could have been filmed inside c.house.

EverySongbirdSays · 13/11/2016 07:22

It is all green screen. There's features in some of the big papers showing

The Brothers Wales live at Kensington don't they?

NapQueen · 13/11/2016 07:33

All green screen? That's really amazing it's so well done.

CongresswomanCaveMum · 13/11/2016 09:18

Claire Foy and Matt Smith were on The Chris Evan's Show and said they built things like the gates at Buckingham Palace out of MDF/polystyrene and then dropped the background in as green screen.

I spotted last night, while watching the Coronation episode, that the Windor's house in France was filmed at the Officer's Mess at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire - DH was stationed there a few years ago. It's a lovely old Rothschild mansion that was gifted to the RAF. It's been used in quite a few period films/tv shows.

I finished watching this yesterday and I really enjoyed it, not normally the sort of thing that I watch but found it very interesting. Cant wait for the next batch Grin

tribpot · 13/11/2016 11:57

Just finished it - thought it was great although has made me angry on Princess Margaret's behalf. I wonder if his marriage to Camilla was only allowed once Margaret had died, as that really would have been the most dreadful salt in the wounds.

CongresswomanCaveMum · 13/11/2016 12:03

In some ways I do feel sorry for Margaret, but she was given the option of removing herself from I'm the line of accession and giving up her royal lifestyle. She certainly wouldn't have been left penniless and destitute, she'd have probably had a similar lifestyle to the Windsor's, but she didn't want to do it.

tribpot · 13/11/2016 12:13

I got confused at that point, as the Queen mentioned at one point an act of renunciation that would have meant Margaret I guess officially becoming a commoner, and Margaret defiantly saying 'I could do that, you think I couldn't but I could' - and then it didn't get mentioned again, as if the idea wasn't possible.

diddl · 13/11/2016 12:52

Wasn't it also said though that Maragaret would have to go into exile?

That seemed harsh to me.

tribpot · 13/11/2016 13:44

Yes, she'd have to live out of the country was the implication (presumably something ancient relating to a pretender to the throne not being able to collect a band of supporters around him/herself and threaten the throne). But as Peter Townsend was stationed in Brussels anyway that doesn't seem like it would have been a huge barrier.

Snapespeare · 13/11/2016 14:07

Oh it was MAGNIFICENT!

Prince Philip, such a shit!

Uncle Dickie reminds me of Uncle Quentin in the comic strips 'five go mad...'

diddl · 13/11/2016 14:13

I got the impression not just that it would be living out of the country though, but also not being allowed to visit & no one visiting her/them (as per the Windsors).

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/theroyalfamily/6520837/Princess-Margaret-recently-unearthed-letter-sheds-new-light-on-decision-not-to-marry.html

Letters that came to light a few years ago suggest that Margaret decide to cool the relationship with Townsend, and not was forced to due to duty.

Trills · 13/11/2016 17:28

Oh dear, I fear Winston Churchill is going to harrass the new girl. How very Mad Men.

Trills · 13/11/2016 18:00

Amazing work on the sense of peril - I agree with raisedbyguineapigs that I want to stop George VI from smoking even though
a - he's been dead 64 years
b - stopping smoking at that point would have not helped his lungs anyway

On ep2 now and feeling quite stressed about the race to tell about his death.

tribpot · 13/11/2016 18:15

Yes, it was surprising how long the death took to happen in the show, it did give it a sense of peril when you expected the first ep to open with his death, more or less. Felt terrible when Elizabeth and Philip turned up at Treetops, though. Like somehow if they didn't stay (or Philip got trampled by an elephant) it wouldn't happen.

You can quite see why the Queen doesn't want to join in celebrating the anniversaries of her reign on the day itself when it is such a sad day for her.

Trills · 13/11/2016 18:17

"Let's not complicate things unnecessarily, my name is Elizabeth"

"Then long live Queen Elizabeth"

And she bloody well has!

diddl · 13/11/2016 18:23

Jared Harris is fabulous, isn't he?

The way they are all puffing away on their fags though!

Did they really have no idea?

tribpot · 13/11/2016 18:40

I like Princess Margaret puffing away whilst on horseback, at a barbecue at Balmoral (I imagine they didn't call it a barbecue, though) .. talk about enjoying the fresh air.

raisedbyguineapigs · 13/11/2016 18:48

Diddl I was wondering the same thing, so I looked it up. Doctors started suspecting smoking was behind the massive increase in lung cancer and lung disease in the 1930's and 40's, but it was still far from known. Most doctors disputed it and even more appallingly, the tobacco companies disputed it and took out lawsuits until the 60's. They were eventually sued because they knew about the links almost without a doubt but decided to hide it.

CongresswomanCaveMum · 13/11/2016 18:50

I'm surprised that they haven't really shown the Queen smoking much. I thought it was one of the worst kept secrets that she was certainly a smoker for many years, if not now.

In fact on the celeb gossip thread there were a lot of people claiming the Duchess of Cambridge is a current smoker.

Trills · 13/11/2016 18:55

Margaret is very pretty isn't she?

In this they had the Queen disapproving of Philip smoking even before they married, they've decided she is a non-smoker.

raisedbyguineapigs · 13/11/2016 19:29

Loads of people in the public eye smoke because it keeps their weight down. I heard Kate was a smoker too.

EverySongbirdSays · 14/11/2016 06:42

did they really have no idea?

did you not know that right up until the 60s it was PRESCRIBED for many things including anxiety and during pregnancy !

IamaLadyeee · 14/11/2016 11:18

I thought the actress playing Margaret looks like a young Elizabeth Taylor.

wow, just Googled her, and she has blonde hair! Shock I think she looks better with the dark hair
