Had a look but couldn't see another thread.

Anyone else watched any? Just seen the first episode and can't make my mind up. I'm ambivalent towards the monarchy but the production seems sumptuous. It's nice seeing all the 40's/50's fashions though.

Oh I think there was a nasty streak there yes.

The hatred between her and the Windsors was certainly mutual

tribpot · 16/11/2016 08:32

I guess maybe she wanted a place of her own - and obviously that would have to be a castle - as her other residences had gone to the Queen and Glamis Castle (her family home) to her brother Patrick and then his son Timothy.

WipsGlitter · 16/11/2016 19:26

I was interested in the bit where they have a fight and he's films storming out of the house in Australia. Then they give her the film. Did that really happen?

Agree about watching it with Wikipedia open!

NapQueen · 16/11/2016 22:12

Im amazed at how neutral the Queen needs to be. And how much this tv show implies she is also like that behind closed doors.
id actually love to be staff for the royal famly.

raisedbyguineapigs · 17/11/2016 09:41

Blimey Napqueen that was a good find! They have really researched this to death, haven't they? I might have to watch it again, rather than wait for Series 2!

diddl · 17/11/2016 10:34

"I guess maybe she wanted a place of her own"

Yes, as I'm sure HM could have found her something on the Balmoral Estate, the Windsor Estate or the Sandringham Estate if she'd really wanted!

You can search for jobs in the Royal Household! I signed up for alerts even though be no intention of applying for anything

They're usually things like tour guides for the Palaces but sometimes things like kitchen staff, cleaners, etc appear.

Does anyone know if you'll be able to buy the series on DVD.... for example for old mums who would LoVE the series but who will never get Netflix...?

tribpot · 17/11/2016 13:10

I didn't think Netflix released DVDs of their original series but I can see that you can buy Orange is the New Black on DVD, so I would imagine at some point The Crown will be too.

LumelaMme · 17/11/2016 13:20

I've got my eye out for the DVD of The Crown for my aunt - Netflix, are you reading this thread?

ofhorse · 17/11/2016 14:27

Great Christmas present is what I was thinking.... don't think many people under 60 have Netflix and they like to watch a lot of telly!

raisedbyguineapigs · 17/11/2016 14:48

I think one of the reasons they invested in the series was that they wanted to increase their subscriptions to Netflix amongst the over 40's. I hope they still bring out the DVD though. It will be a massive seller for them.

tribpot · 17/11/2016 15:25

Yes, I would imagine it will be some time before they release it on DVD. Orange is the New Black Season 1 came out on DVD in the UK on 19 May 2014, it was broadcast on Netflix on July 11 2013. Season 2 was broadcast on 6 June 2014, so I bet the DVD release was timed to try and hook people in before S2 went out, in the hopes of converting them to Netflix watchers. I'd expect something similar for The Crown.

Trills · 17/11/2016 21:32

Poor Queen.

The minute you smile or frown you've declared a position.

Back when people were calling Kate Middleton a gold-digger or a prince-chaser this was always my position - she must really like him to put up with all the crap that comes with his family. The benefits are not enough to outweigh the stress. Her family was already well-off, she could have had a very nice life with another man who was not heir to the throne.

tribpot · 17/11/2016 22:50

Yes, it must be hellish. Not really the Cinderella story it? Marry Prince Charming and get papped and have shit talked about you in the tabloids for the rest of your natural life. No wonder they all drank so much on the show.

CongresswomanCaveMum · 19/11/2016 09:35

Interesting BBC article on the truth behind what actually happened with Princess Margaret and Group Captain Townsend - www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-38032464

Trills · 19/11/2016 09:57

SPOILER ALERT.

:o

RepentAtLeisure · 19/11/2016 18:28

I'm surprised they included 'Porchey' in the show. There's a longstanding rumour that he was the father of Andrew.

Trills · 19/11/2016 19:11

The correct term for a horse hump is something that I only learned in recent Jilly Cooper books.

CongresswomanCaveMum · 19/11/2016 19:49

By "horse hump" do you mean a covering? I work in Racing and have spent many an hour in the "covering shed" taking mares to visit the stallions Grin

Trills · 19/11/2016 20:06

Indeed.

From Jilly I know that it is "a covering".

Phillip just called it "a horse hump".

NoahVale · 20/11/2016 02:30

just watched the first 3 episodes.
Would really like to buy the DVD for my DM.
I recall quite a bit of thigns about Edward, the letters he wrote, i am not sure how I know these things, I am assuming my dm told me. How the public simply Loved King George, sort of felt sorry for him.

i also read, probably after watching the Kings Speech, that smoking was recommended for him Sad for his stutter.
enjoying this very much, love the styles, love Clare Foy and Matt Smith.

NoahVale · 20/11/2016 02:33

shocking to see Queen Mother and Queen Mary curtsying to The Queen, when they meet when the King has just died Shock
