Had a look but couldn't see another thread.

Anyone else watched any? Just seen the first episode and can't make my mind up. I'm ambivalent towards the monarchy but the production seems sumptuous. It's nice seeing all the 40's/50's fashions though.

Yes but by then, he would have served his full term in the military, brought up his children with his wife in relative obscurity (and luxury) and then been consort. It's what Kate and William want to do now.

diddl · 08/11/2016 14:45

The same goes for HM though, doesn't it?

But she seemingly just got on with it.

"It's what Kate and William want to do now."

Yes & appear to be doing.

Presumably they can because HM is still on the throne & the heir is still alive.

If Charles were King, they would have to be doing a lot more I would have thought.

raisedbyguineapigs · 08/11/2016 15:00

Yes thats true. I'm not saying he shouldn't have acted with more grace, in hindsight, but I'm just saying I can see where he was coming from. And tbf to him, he was only petulant for about a year, then he's done the standing to the side, watching his wife cut ribbons all day for the other 60+ years. with the occasional shagging session behind her back

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 08/11/2016 15:01

I felt pretty sorry for her (in the series) it seems that she was railroaded into a lot of things she didn't want because of being bullied by men,and by the weight of tradition.

raisedbyguineapigs · 08/11/2016 15:04

But I think he did just fall in love with a girl who happened to be Heir to the Throne. She clearly adores him too. I think it's quite sweet. They are probably part of the last generation who could possibly make it to their 70th wedding anniversary.

Funny, because I'm not a royalist in any way, shape or form. but I find them fascinating as people. AA Gill described the RF as the 'Nations pets' I think thats quite accurate.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 08/11/2016 15:11

I missed the BJ reference, I must've been making a cuppa at that point!

SenecaFalls · 08/11/2016 15:31

Grin at "But y'know, we won't be thinking of corgis next time we see ol' Liz and Phil."

Andylion · 08/11/2016 15:46

Regina as in the office of the monarch. Rhymes with vagina

I know what it refers to. I've always pronounced it the Latin way, not the way city is pronounced. The Canadian city rhymes with "vagina".

southeastdweller · 08/11/2016 21:18

I've finished and loved every minute of it. Hopefully the second series will be shown earlier than next November, but then again if it's as good as the first one it'll be worth waiting for as long as it takes.

TheBadgersMadeMeDoIt · 09/11/2016 13:53

RaisedByGuineaPigs I agree. This is an incredible series that deals with the subject matter with class, realism and respect. It makes Downton and Victoria look like Am Dram pantomimes.

DiscoMike · 09/11/2016 15:20

I was just reading about Porchester - look at this DM article Hmm www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2080581/Downton-Abbey-How-real-life-heir-plotted-kill-father.html

There's a photo of him with Prince Andrew looking very much like him and describes him as "a notorious womaniser with a reputation for cuckolding half the men in Berkshire" Where's Windsor Castle?

DiscoMike · 09/11/2016 15:22

And I am amused at the same actor playing the Duke of Windsor as King Leopold in Victoria.

Leanback · 09/11/2016 15:29

Phillip acts like a sulky man child throughout.

And Alan Bennett in Lady In The Van!!

SenecaFalls · 09/11/2016 15:53

And Anthony Eden in Churchill's Secret.

DiscoMike · 09/11/2016 16:56

Oh so he was the guy on Graham Norton with Maggie Smith? He was so nice to her, she really didn't look like she wanted to be there and he was looking after her. He's taking over the world, isn't he Grin

EverySongbirdSays · 09/11/2016 17:55

Yes, Maggie Smith rarely does press and there were jokes about the fact she never shows up to the Emmys. But really at her age could you be arsed flying to America especially to sit there for hours clapping and smiling when you could be at home in your slippers with a gin?

I had a feeling tht her Norton was recorded at a time convenient to her too.

Has never watched Downton and was positively scandalised by the idea she might.

Who dear?

Me dear?

No dear

raisedbyguineapigs · 09/11/2016 18:24

disco I can't believe the Queen would risk having a child out of wedlock, and I doubt Philip would stand by her if she did. But Andrew is the only one without the male pattern balding... Is it alluded to later on? I'm on episode 7.

raisedbyguineapigs · 09/11/2016 18:26

It's Betty and Phil's 70th wedding anniversary' next November. I wonder if they will show it in the middle of that or go earlier?

southeastdweller · 09/11/2016 18:30

No it's not alluded to later on. I'd have thought it was quite likely that one of three brothers wouldn't be balding the like other two...anyone have an experience of this?!

DiscoMike · 09/11/2016 18:45

Seriously, google images of Porchester and Prince Andrew. Peas in a pod Grin

EverySongbirdSays · 09/11/2016 19:01

I think that S2 MAY allege an affair with Porchy. I can't think why he'd even be in it otherwise.

And yes, the resemblance is striking.

SenecaFalls · 09/11/2016 19:45

I'm now watching it a second time. Another minor deviation from historical accuracy: Philip's mother, Princess Alice, did not wear her nun's habit to the wedding. She was dressed similarly to the other women.
