Anyone watching this yet?

OP posts:
EverySongbirdSays · 22/10/2016 00:16

Kimmy

I was fucking RAGING over Utopia and to add insult to fucking injury, it was sold to America without the original riter whose fucking idea it was, to be made by David Fincer and the Gone Girl writer for HBO, it's now been shelved.

To be clear, I'm glad that Charlie went with Netflix to make more, and part of the reason why was sudden word of mouth in America. Eg White Christmas wouldn't exist if Jon Hamm hadn't reached out to Charlie

BUT

It doesn't feel as "British" in style anymore. It's lost a certain basis in recognisable society, and feels a bit stylised. Granted I haven't seen the two episodes that are the most British yet.

of course they need the money to get something like Playtest to work and not look a bit shit like 15 million merits did. Pros n Cons

Spending that much money on Bake Off is baffling as fuck the more you think about it. It's simply not worth what it cost them. Even if they flog a dead horse with merch and events I can't see how they'll recoup it. Bad deal.

The weirdest thing about National Anthem (PM/Pig) is that Charlie Brooker was as horrified as anyone else and perhaps more so when the DC story came out. He had no idea

Yeah right Hmm Grin

I will watch the other 3 episodes over the weekend.

TheHiphopopotamus · 22/10/2016 00:22

Watched the first two.

I really can't take to Bryce Dallas Howard as an actress, I don't know why. I thought the idea behind that one was scarily accurate though.

The second one was just ok, but I'm enjoying them. They're kind of like a Tales of the Unexpected for the digital age. Doesn't bother me that CB sold out to Netflix, just means they'll throw more money at production which is a good thing. I think you could really tell that with the first one.

My favourite one of all 3 series was the one with Jon Hamm.

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 22/10/2016 00:25

Agree with you on all counts. The current rumour that Richard Ayoade would host it though is the weirdest load of bollocks I've heard in a while though Grin That said, it led me to his twitter feed which led me to 1000 times

EverySongbirdSays · 22/10/2016 00:27

Well, I believed his reaction at the time and what he's said since anyway, which is :

"I'd have been screaming it into traffic if I'd known" Grin

^Sorry. That was to songbird
Rory Kinnear was excellent as the PM.

EverySongbirdSays · 22/10/2016 00:28

I can't take to Bryce either High I absolutely hated her in Jurassic World, woeful piss poor acting.

OP posts:
KimmySchmidtsSmile · 22/10/2016 00:29

No. I thought it was one of those quirks of fate too.

EverySongbirdSays · 22/10/2016 00:30

And my Guardian link is to Whispering - thread got really active suddenly.

OP posts:
TheHiphopopotamus · 22/10/2016 00:30

Christ can you imagine Richard Ayoade making small talk with baking contestants Confused

He was on that Big Fat Quiz thing with Jimmy Carr one year and had about as much charisma as a boiled egg. It was painful to watch (and I loved him in IT Crowd & The Mighty Boosh, but I can't see Bake Off being his 'thing').

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 22/10/2016 00:33

She was alright in The Help although it was a one note role. I had no idea her dad was Ron happy days Howard until recently though Shock Nepotism not getting her as many roles as you'd expect tbh ...Confused

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 22/10/2016 00:34

He'd have to be in character Wink

TheHiphopopotamus · 22/10/2016 00:37

The guy who played Cooper in the second one is Wyatt Russell who is the son of Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. It was annoying me all the way through because he looked familiar and when he was crying I thought he looked like Kate Hudson. Which he would do, seeing as they're brother and sister Confused

It's a shame about BDH too, she's perfectly inoffensive but I just don't like her.

thenightsky · 22/10/2016 18:44

Just watched 3 episodes. I think mine might be in a different order though. 1st one was the FB style rating/wedding one. 2nd one was the gaming one in the house. 3rd one was the young lad in the McDonalds type work place getting the phone messages - this was by far the darkest one!

Loving them all so far. Next up, after I've got the dinner on, will be San Junipero, according to the Netflix order of running.

EverySongbirdSays · 22/10/2016 18:56

That's the right order, I read that you could watch in any order, so I did! Still haven't watch 3, 5, 6 yet.

OP posts:
pinkeye · 22/10/2016 18:58

These are brill but so unsettling thanks for the thread

TheHiphopopotamus · 22/10/2016 19:31

The San Junipero one was kind of uplifting but a bit depressing at the same time. Can't quite put my finger on why at the moment though.

I saw all the other series when they were on Channel 4. I thought they were series but the episodes were standalones. Are you supposed to watch the others in order, then?

EverySongbirdSays · 22/10/2016 19:43

No, they are standalone, you can watch whatever order. I was left wondering about what I would choose given that choice - San Junipero, I've become less and less religious as an adult but was brought up to believe in an afterlife, led to lots of existential questioning.

OP posts:
TheHiphopopotamus · 22/10/2016 19:50

Ah, right, thanks.

I'm currently watching the last episode at the moment. The weakest one imo, was ep 5.

Are we discussing them on this thread? I feel like unless there's a huge SPOILERS in the thread title, someone will be along to have a go about giving the game away.

EverySongbirdSays · 22/10/2016 19:52

I've been thinking the same High I'll ask MNHQ to add spoiler warning, just in case, there's always one, and then we can all dissect the episodes freely, I poss won't come back on til I've finished though.

OP posts:
TheHiphopopotamus · 22/10/2016 20:15

Blimey that was quick with the title mnhq Grin

See you soon then songbird Smile

CaptainHammer · 22/10/2016 20:35

I've just finished the last one.
Enjoyed them but not as much as the other 2 series, not really sure why. Think it'll take a while for them to digest!
Episode 6 was a bit too long. I think episode 3 and 5 were my favourites. Episode 1 is scarily similar to how some people I know are already!

I just read the next series will have 12 episodes.

thenightsky · 22/10/2016 20:45

God yes... episode 1 with the facebook likes thing taking over your life... sad though.

TheHiphopopotamus · 22/10/2016 20:46

I found it hard to binge watch them actually. Because they're all quite different in tone, I couldn't concentrate on the one I was watching because I was still thinking about the previous one I'd just watched (if that makes any sense at all Confused).

I realise that is completely my problem and it's what you get for being greedy. I feel they are more to be savoured and watched over a period of time. I really enjoyed them though.
