Grouchy And Soup and anyone else complaining about the bright colours of the show stopper cakes, Jane's was TOO tasteful, I hope you don't mind my pointing out that in the Tudor times bright colours in everything was a huge novelty , so the rich HAD to have brightness in everything Grin because the poor couldn't afford the dyes.

Or the sugar hence all that over sugared marzipan\marchpane etc.

I thought that Selasi should've gone rather than Bmina. But I can't taste the baking Grin.

GrumpyOldBag · 13/10/2016 09:13

Candice's peacock was a blatant rip off of the one Nadiya did last year, made in almost exactly the same way.

I think she should be disqualified for that.

The bakers should at least try and have original ideas.

TwoDrifters · 13/10/2016 09:31

I wondered if Selasi has a girlfriend who will be watching and not best pleased with the flirting that's been going on as he seemed to go out of his way to state that he views Benjamina as a sister Grin

GrouchyKiwi · 13/10/2016 09:32

ppeat Yes, Jane's was boring, if pretty. They were all a bit of a letdown, I feel.

I think I could have coped with the peacock if the inside of the cake wasn't so neon!

SoupDragon · 13/10/2016 09:44

It was the inside of the peacock cake that was far too bright. The outside was peacock coloured, as it should be. I wasn't a fan of the overall look of it - I think it was the body. The tail and head were good.

Roussette · 13/10/2016 09:46

Yes I agree on Candice's peacock and was it really "tudor" apart from the fact it was a peacock? Why would you copy the previous winner's showstopper, I am so surprised Paul/mary didn't say something.

NotCitrus · 13/10/2016 10:28

Loved the peacock and the swan/Tudor rose cake. Was cringing along with Andrew as his caramel lances ended up as ejaculating codpieces.

Selasi was hugely lucky last week and this - I'd love to go to a restaurant run by him and Benjamina though, where they can keep things in the oven for an extra two minutes where necessary.

Predict Andrew or Candice to win. Was lovely to see Candice relaxing and smiling a bit this episode, though I hate how many people say they don't like her just because she doesn't smile.

Backingvocals · 13/10/2016 10:57

I wondered about rice crispies in a tudor showstopper. For that reason I preferred Jane's.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 13/10/2016 11:53

Candice and Andrew are on level pegging for me in terms of who's the most irritating. I thought Jane's cake was the most impressive even if it was understated. It certainly looked Tudor-ish. Was underwhelmed by the peacock and yes, shades of Nadiya's cake indeed!

Selasi was lucky to stay although I'm glad he did.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 13/10/2016 11:54

Jane deserves to win as she's the most consistent. Candice is ambitious but the end results of very hit and miss.

ppeatfruit · 13/10/2016 11:57

But as I said the Tudor royals loved the bling inside and outside of their cakes Grin

I like Candice's lippy when it's understated, it's less off putting. It's her footwear that must be very uncomfortable standing about for so long.

I like that all the competitors seem to be proper friends this time.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 13/10/2016 11:59

I know the Tudor's loved their bling and I still thought Jane's cake was the best.

ppeatfruit · 13/10/2016 12:05

Yes Jane's cake looked beautiful, (and tasty) ideal for our royals NOW Grin Not the Tudors though. Grin

SoupDragon · 13/10/2016 12:21

Jane is consistently good But I'm not sure she's shown too many examples of excellence. To be fair, I think those examples have been lacking all round this series. Andrew's Cog shaped pies and the mousse cake big wheel last week were excellent and Candice has shown flashes of brilliance but, as you say, it has been hit and miss all round this year. Even Jane has had disasters.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 13/10/2016 12:23

I thought the decoration on Jane's caked looked plenty Tudor enough. It's not as though they were awarding marks for authenticity of period.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 13/10/2016 12:25

Yes I think this has been the most underwhelming series so far. Lots of them are good but no one is brilliant. Candice has two mediocre bakes for every good one.

MiddleClassProblem · 13/10/2016 12:40

I think Bmin and Selasi's flirting is far too mild for a partner to get worried about.

ppeatfruit · 13/10/2016 12:41

True Soup I've enjoyed it though (hope I it's not the last one Sad )

NotCitrus · 13/10/2016 12:57

I haven't watched much of previous series, but this one seems to be trying to add pressure by making time very tight - almost all disasters have been when someone would have been fine if they could have just left the item in the oven a bit longer.

I suspect Mary and Hollywood bloke are judging a bit by how they think the bake would have worked if it was finished, as that's the skill in a less artificial environment.

ppeatfruit · 13/10/2016 13:20

Yes I agree NotCitrus It's silly , just to ramp up the pressure, not necessary IMO. Why do producers think we all only watch stuff with suspense and, usually, sex and violence ?

It annoys me a lot.

MiddleClassProblem · 13/10/2016 14:05

This is how they ruined don't tell the bride. In away in glad they are finishing before it gets too silly. I am missing the arty side this year but then maybe it wasn't until Francis that that became the norm.

Yes I wasn't too keen on Francis either. There's clever and there's right OTT you have to eat the bakes! The judges were keen to make her flavour her cooking properly which was correct IMO.

They are repeating the old GBBOs on Tues, nights and I watched this week it's great to see the bits where I had dozed off !!

ample · 13/10/2016 22:11

You're all very good at remembering past showstoppers. My mind is a sieve, I had to google Blush.

Came across a few peacock cakes amongst pics of Nadia's. I have to share this (best one I've seen and no crispies!)
