Started last night C4 9pm.
I thought it was good.
Excellent performances from Robbie Coltrane, Julie Walters & Tim McInnerny.

OP posts:

I thought there may well be. Still some things not explained. What happened with his daughter, was his friend/partner involved ? I wonder if new evidence will come to light and he will be retried.

Guess we ll see.

LizzieMacQueen · 12/10/2016 19:57

The man who put his hand up the girl's skirt was the agent, the guy who was in Coronation Street. I thought he might turn out to be the rapist.

I thought the evidence RC gave, his explanation of why he didn't like to be naked, was a bit disingenuous given that 30 years earlier he was not fat.

So a tiny bit disappointing but good nevertheless. Nice to see Lee Mack.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 12/10/2016 20:01

I did wonder if Lee Mack knew his character would be congratulating someone who had just got away with rape.

DiegeticMuch · 12/10/2016 20:03

Maybe the age-related illness reflected the fact that he's a fading star in late middle-age now. Made him look that bit more pathetic and unappealing.

EachandEveryone · 12/10/2016 20:28

I really don't think it will come back on it was brilliant as a one off. I expect it will win lots of awards.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 12/10/2016 20:59

Lee Mack was in it?

Rollergirl1 · 12/10/2016 21:55

The guy who put his hand up the waitresses skirt was the agent. Also have people not realised that the waitress was the girl that was raped? Nobody seems to have mentioned that.

mouldycheesefan · 13/10/2016 09:13

In the programme, Lee mack took over from him on the quiz show "smuggle" whilst he was suspended.

Yes everyone realised the waitress was the girl that was raped.

stonecircle · 13/10/2016 09:33

I didn't realise it mouldy Blush

mouldycheesefan · 13/10/2016 09:36

Actually it could have been the girl that was raped friend, grace.

HarryPottersMagicWand · 13/10/2016 11:49

No, it was Rebecca, her friend was over in the corner and she went over and was whispering to her after.

There won't be a second series. It wasn't supposed to be all tied up. There is nothing to have a second series with.

I would never want to be a victim on the stand though. How they pulled them apart was horrific.

I though RC was crying because he hadn't realised how much of an effect what he did had on her.

I think when JW slept with the friend, it dawned on her what sex could be like. She mentioned before RC was the only man she had ever slept with so she didn't really know any different. I think that was a big eye opener for her.

mouldycheesefan · 13/10/2016 12:00

Agree nothing left for a second series

yummymummycleo · 13/10/2016 19:35

What about what he did/didn't do to his daughter? I would like to know that. Why she ended up as she did and why she has such a strained relationship with her mum.

If his partner/best friend was involved or heard more than shown.

Oblomov16 · 13/10/2016 22:03

Disappointing. Poor ending.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/10/2016 22:10

I though RC was crying because he hadn't realised how much of an effect what he did had on her

I thought he was feeling sorry for himself and terrified her be sent down.

Wrt the daughter- she was fucked up, if she wasn't abused by him there were inappropriate things going on and she either knew or 'felt' it.

We don't always everything spoon feed to us and the ending wrapped up in a neat bow. Sometimes it's nice to think things over when there's an ambiguous endingWink

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/10/2016 22:11

**he'd be sent down

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/10/2016 22:12

**always need

Stupid phone!!Hmm

APlaceOnTheCouch · 14/10/2016 12:24

Dame yy I thought he was crying for himself too.
I also thought Mairi told Dee she shouldn't have come home because she was trying to protect her DD. At the beginning, the DD told her dad that she'd been advised not to see him, and it was the mum who did all the visiting. I think Mairi thought being at home would be detrimental to the DD's recovery.
I also don't think it needs a follow-up.

onlyconnect · 14/10/2016 12:33

I thought the ending was excellent, like the whole series. Paul alone, bellowing into the abyss.
I would be disappointed if there was a follow on, the ambiguities are part of the strength of the series. There are always ambiguities in families and relationships. I thought the writing was excellent: so much in four 45 minute episodes. Superb acting too. One of the best things I've seen in a long time.

MagicChanges · 14/10/2016 14:50

I thought it was excellent and the acting superb but with Julie Walters and Robbie Coltrane it had to be - I was really disappointed with the ending though..............just nothing. Felt I'd watched it all for nothing. And yes I'm pretty sure we were meant to think he'd sexually abused his daughter because of the flashbacks and her drug addiction. And we only saw the grandchildren once and not the father - seemed odd. And I'd expected a guilty verdict as the alleged victims were very compelling in their evidence. But it was all fiction of course................

I thought it was a perfect ending. Would you have liked him to be banged up?

Why so sarcastic Dame am I not entitled to my opinion because it differs from yours. No I wouldn't have liked him banged up - I'm not that naive. You clearly have more appreciation of the finer points of dramatic productions.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 14/10/2016 16:07

I don't think Dame was being sarcastic although I'm sure she can respond for herself I think she was just wondering what would have made it better for you?
I could see how it could be anti-climatic if you expected justice to be served or the ends to be tied up.
Instead it opted for unease, unfairness and unanswered questions.
I think it's always difficult to get a conviction in rape cases regardless of how compelling the 'victims' are because the jury worries about convicting an innocent man more than they worry about freeing a guilty one.

Clawdy · 14/10/2016 16:07

Why would her being a drug addict mean she had been sexually abused? I'm sure she was aware of her father's lifestyle, and it would have disturbed her, but I found the scene where he told her how much he loved her very believable, and was one of the few scenes where I felt sympathy for him.
