Started last night C4 9pm.
I thought it was good.
Excellent performances from Robbie Coltrane, Julie Walters & Tim McInnerny.

He was aparently abused by his dad.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 05/10/2016 12:43

Ah thanks!

Lottapianos · 05/10/2016 12:47

'It has a horror movie feel to it'

It really does, in both sound and vision. Its the most unsettling program I've seen for a while, really creepy. The relationships within the family are so complex. I still don't know what to make of Dee's relationship with her dad, or why she was so close to him but resented her mother, even as a teenager

JW is so brilliant in this that her accent doesn't even bother me too much. Agree they should have let her use her own accent

The80sweregreat · 05/10/2016 18:16

Lotta, ,my dh isnt normally one to be spooked, but he has also found this unsettling. Neither of us have experience of the issues raised ( thank goodness) but the filming of it seems odd, gives us both the creeps. Its unnerving.
Lucy speed as young Maura is very good, actually looks like a young JW.

ImperialBlether · 05/10/2016 18:39

But when he was talking about his dad abusing him, he would've been in his late teens by then - I thought that was very unlikely. He said "It never happened again - and then I met your mum..." or something like that, as though the two events were very close together.

I thought in episode one, where he's questioned by the police and then immediately spends the night with a prostitute really unbelievable. The press were onto him by then and he wouldn't have risked that coming out.

Julie Walters' accent kept changing. When she was Irish, it worked. She forgot to do that at times, though. And sometimes she looked ancient and other times quite young. That wasn't just down to stress.

It seems like it needs more than one episode now. They're hinting at repressed memories on the part of both the daughter and Julie Walters. They're also hinting the partner isn't what he seemed.

That night when he was apparently raping the girl and was interrupted by the runner - that was his partner, wasn't it, there to tell him that his wife was there with bad news about their daughter's overdose?

Lottapianos · 05/10/2016 18:51

Yes, the 'runner' was his comedy partner, or so it was suggested last night.

It will be torture if things don't become much clearer next week

UnGoogleable · 05/10/2016 20:45

Ooh I've really enjoyed this so far.

I think the acting is really good (apart from JW's unnecessary accent) - Dee in particular is exceptionally good. I also think the guy who plays the Young Paul is great, his accent is spot on.

I think there's definitely more to Paul's partner (can't remember his name, the bloke from BlackAdder!). There's also a lot more to Dee and her Mother's relationship.

The bit where they were all having dinner when young, and the Maura witnessed that bloke groping the waitress - I think that was significant. She saw it happen but didn't stand up for her or try to stop it.......

So here's my theory. I think the Partner blokey had a fling with Maura. And Dee knew about it. And then I think that the partner bloke (aargh, what is his name?) also abused Dee. And Maura let it happen.

I think Paul is innocent. He was and is a shagger, but I don't think he's guilty of rape or child molestation.

I could of course be completely wrong about it all!

Lottapianos · 05/10/2016 21:06

Potentially a good theory Un!

Oblomov16 · 05/10/2016 22:37

Only one episode left. How are they going to tie it all up? It's been very slow.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 06/10/2016 13:17

I just caught up with it today.
I don't see how we can possibly find out in only one episode. There's going to be a verdict (which seems to be tilting towards innocent atm) but I don't think as viewers we will know if the verdict is correct or not.
I have the same coat as Dee . . . which made me feel a bit sad. Sad
I'm feeling conflicted about the burden falling on the women ie the wife and DD. This week's episode made the wife seem more culpable than Paul in a way because there's ambiguity over Paul's actions but the wife seemed to be presented with more absolutes eg she failed her DD; she condoned the affairs; the confrontation in the toilet put a lot of the burden on her. . .as though if the wife had only stepped up in some way then none of this would have happened.
So we had an episode from Dee's pov; and this week was the wife; does that mean next week will be Paul's pov?

susiella · 06/10/2016 15:31

I'm afraid I didn't watch ep3. I'm finding it very uncomfortable viewing. The whole family seems to be 'dysfunctional' & it's not entertainment any more.

TroysMammy · 06/10/2016 22:20

I can't imagine a trial and an outcome in one episode. I hope Paul doesn't drop dead from a heart attack, then we will never know what really happened.

RosieWithTheGoodCreditHistory · 08/10/2016 22:49

Seeing as how heavily the previous episodes have leaned on flashbacks I'm hoping we will find out. If we see them from Paul/the babysitter's POV alongside the trial (which is what I'm assuming and hoping they do) they can get it into an hour, I think

DiegeticMuch · 09/10/2016 08:33

I'm wondering if they'll keep it ambiguous at the end, hopeful of a second series.

A second outing could deal with additional allegations following his original trial (this happened to Harris, I think).

I'd rather see it wrapped up, but the creators will be thinking in terms of recommission I suspect.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 09/10/2016 09:46

The trailer seems to be showing a trial. If they've written with one eye on recommissioning then maybe there will be a trial and an outcome (I'm going for innocent) then just as they're celebrating, they're told that someone else has come forward . . .

AndNowItsSeven · 09/10/2016 22:52

Brilliant acting, but incredibly boring. I really tried to like it but gave up ten minutes into episode three.

Bluesue26 · 10/10/2016 13:02

Does anyone remember in the first episode when Dee goes to the babysitters house the first time and she says something along the lines of, "you must remember what he was like back then". I really hope we'll get some sort of clarity in the last episode. I hate it when they leave it up in the air. It's like when somebody knows a secret and tries to tease you that they know and you don't. Pisses me right off :)

Awks · 11/10/2016 22:04

She left him then.

shins · 11/10/2016 22:08

Yes she knew he was guilty. So some kind of justice.

gingina · 11/10/2016 22:12

Well that was grim!
I still don't get the stuff about his DD though? I thought it would explain why she was so screwed up and the odd relationship with her Mum? Did she know what her dad had done all along?

stonecircle · 11/10/2016 22:19

Well his DD knew what was going on with the baby sitter - perhaps she assumed that because that was clearly consensual, the stuff with the girl in the trailer was too. And her mum obviously didn't love her so perhaps she just couldn't bear to think ill of her dad.

I thought it was very good and Robbie Coltrane's acting was superb.

shins · 11/10/2016 22:25

So the babysitter wasn't telling the truth?

Janus · 11/10/2016 22:30

But the babysitter was only 15 so therefore that was rape too, even if she did consent she wasn't old enough to understand what she was doing.

stonecircle · 11/10/2016 22:33

Ah I didn't pick up that she was only 15.

neonrainbow · 11/10/2016 22:37

I'm not sure what to make of that episode. Very hard to watch the flashbacks then the verdict.
