Well Charlize did play Aileen Wuornos...

But agree re Jenna, and indeed Emily Blunt in The Young Victoria. I did once see a documentary on Victoria where she was played by a very plain actress but that's the only one I can recall.

raisedbyguineapigs · 04/09/2016 22:06

Nobody seems to be watching this, but I'm glad they have used the servants to explain the Chartist movement a bit and what happened to them. It gives them a purpose. Penge is still a waste of space though. I'm glad he's not in it as much. As is Mr Frankitelli.

LineyReborn · 04/09/2016 22:25

It's all gone a bit bonkers on the historical accuracy front. It's like giving a history lesson to Letitia Cropley to teach.

raisedbyguineapigs · 04/09/2016 22:33

Oh yes it's gone complete fantasy! I read an article by Daisy Goodwin and she seems to really believe the Lord M live story. Even though that was less plausible than Victoria pardoning the Chartists.

raisedbyguineapigs · 04/09/2016 22:34

But I was still a bit choked up when they were at Brockett Hall!

seasidesally · 04/09/2016 22:45

i really enjoyed tonights

agree about V at Brockett hall

Oh god, that scene with Lord M had me in pieces. Did he have to be so bloody noble??

LineyReborn · 05/09/2016 07:24

I half expect Victoria and Mrs Jenkins to now go off and establish Torchwood.

Northernlurker · 05/09/2016 07:26

It's totally ridiculous. Really disappointing because it is a brilliant story if you took the trouble to really dig in to who Victoria was.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/09/2016 08:17

The Brokett hall scene spoiled it for me, it was just too far fetched. Also the bit where she meets Albert again is documented in her diary, so they shouldn't mess around with it for dramatic effect. It's all getting a bit to Downtonesque!

Cerseirys · 05/09/2016 08:32

It is ridiculous but the chemistry between Jenna and Rufus sizzles!

seasidesally · 05/09/2016 19:24

heard on the local radio that Victoria beat Poldark in the viewing figures

was surprised at that though its Victoria for me have never watched Poldark

Badders123 · 05/09/2016 19:34

Poldark a actually beat it in the ratings
Victoria is awful
Woeful
Don't watch Poldark so can't comment

diddl · 05/09/2016 19:39

Rufus Sewell vs Aiden Turner?

No contest for me!
(RS!!)

Was Albert supposed to have been good looking?

seasidesally · 05/09/2016 19:41

thats strange, radio must have got figures wrong

Badders123 · 05/09/2016 20:05

Sorry you are right...Twitter was wrong!

Badders123 · 05/09/2016 20:08

Nope...it got 4.8 live which was less than Pollack, but that went up to 5.2 when iplayer was included

QueenSpartacusOfTheAndals · 05/09/2016 20:15

Was Albert supposed to have been good looking?

Apparently so. Victoria was passionately, bordering on obsessively, in love with him but I've always suspected that he didn't return her feelings to quite that extent.

seasidesally · 05/09/2016 20:17

ha ha were both be right

seasidesally · 05/09/2016 20:22

What has Paul Rhys done to his face?????

It's very slow and the servants bit is just too soapy.

DiegeticMuch · 10/09/2016 17:23

It's dumbed down, but watchable I suppose. I like Eve Myles and Paul Rhys. The elderly uncle and is wife are good too, but scarcely in it.

The best QV portrayal I've seen was Annette Crosbie's in "Edward the Seventh". Felicity Kendall played her firstborn Princess Vicky, and was also superb. A teenage Gwyneth Strong (Cassandra from Only Fools & Horses) played Princess Minny of Denmark. I often think that we did historical drama better in the 1970s.

specialsubject · 10/09/2016 22:25

That takes me back...

I am enjoying it but it is apparently set somewhere like narnia where it is permanently autumn.

SpringerS · 11/09/2016 16:24

I thought it was utterly hilarious that Lord M showed up at the costume ball dressed as Robert Dudley. Scandalous rumours are abound about the Queen and her Prime Minister being lovers. So he shows up at a very public engagement dressed as the (likely) lover of the person she is dressed as and they dance together. It would have destroyed them both!

I also have to wonder what eventually became of Eve Myles' nephew. Did he continue to campaign for his beliefs and have the Newport town square named for him, live his life out as a simple watchmaker or become a wealthy coal mine owner. The fates of the only 3 charterists sentenced to a traitor's death.

I often think that we did historical drama better in the 1970s.
All you have to do is compare Upstairs Downstairs to Downton Abbey (or even the newer UD) to know the truth of that. I'd never heard of Edward the Seventh though, so thanks for that. I watched the first episode last night and it was excellent.

MissBattleaxe · 11/09/2016 16:33

I believe the chartists' death sentences were changed to deportation. One of the more famous chartists returned from Australia having been deported there, and lived into old age. The Museum where I learned this is in John Frost Square, Newport.
