I believe Sansa's closest historical counterpart atm would probably be Lucrezia Borgia. Particularly the events of her 2nd marriage to Alfonso d'Aragon. Obviously, it's not a 100% with it not being driven by her father, but various other male figures after power. However, it is a better fit than the Elizabeth I parallel.

OlennasWimple · 25/06/2016 14:51

There's a bit too much shoe horning of characters there (by people who don't seem to know much about history - Cersei as Lady Grey indeed... )

Felascloak · 25/06/2016 14:52

Surely cersei is closer to cecily neville? I thought GoT had closer parallels to the war of the roses than the tudors

Tommen would be edward iv and Sansa Margaret Beaufort.

EverySongbirdSays · 25/06/2016 15:04

Yeah that's why I didn't post it BECAUSE IT'S SOOO WRONG Grin

IAmNotAMindReader · 25/06/2016 15:18

Oh yes liking the Margaret Beaufort one. Tbh Sansa's probably a composite of a few mentioned here and others more obscure. As many of the characters or groups of people are. GRR Martin didn't just draw from British history, he took his inspiration from the whole world. That's what makes trying to find those inspirations along each main characters story arc fun.

OlennasWimple · 25/06/2016 15:49

Question: why have the Freys not reacted to the death of Lady Bolton and her son?

NeedACleverNN · 25/06/2016 15:52

Question: why have the Freys not reacted to the death of Lady Bolton and her son?

Probably don't know yet. I doubt Ramsay would have sent a Raven to Walder and say congratulations on your new grandson. He and his mother made excellent dog chow. Hope you are well!

IAmNotAMindReader · 25/06/2016 15:56

That may be resolved in the last episode. In the preview, there's another celebration in the same hall as the red wedding. Walder Frey raises a toast stating the Freys and Lannisters send their regards.
With the Boltons now dead the only other people Walder can blame for the slight against his honour are the Lannisters, who put them in power. It's possible Walder tries to stage similar events here, except he will fail as the Lannister army is better trained and equipped.

IAmNotAMindReader · 25/06/2016 16:00

Its also possible they don't know and are just celebrating the victory against the Blackfish or they've decided she died in the battle to retake Winterfell and are ready to lay siege to Winterfell.

OlennasWimple · 25/06/2016 16:10

Hmmm, I guess

Question: how did Jorah get greyscale, and how did Shireen get cured of it?

NeedACleverNN · 25/06/2016 16:17

Jorah for greyscale when he kidnapped Tyrion trying to get back in the Danys good book. They was on that boat and got attacked by those rabid men. They were greyscale men. Don't know how Shireen got cured. Stannis mentioned he had searched the kingdom for every cure so obviously found one. As far as I know, she's the only one to be cured

IAmNotAMindReader · 25/06/2016 16:18

Jorah got Greyscale on his way back to Dany after having been banished. He had captured Tyrion who'd not long landed with Varys and was taking him to her as a gift. They spent most of the journey following a river and on the way passed a quarantined area where people who had contracted greyscale lived. A group of them attacked and one of them touched him.

No one knows how Shireen was cured. So many things were tried that no one knows if it was any one thing or an interaction between a few of them.

OlennasWimple · 25/06/2016 16:24

Thanks!

I'm going back and watching this season again: the first time through I hadn't watched any of the previous seasons, so missed a lot of the importance of various things

NeedACleverNN · 25/06/2016 16:32

The current one? I think greyscale was the season before if you want to rewatch that part

AliceInHinterland · 25/06/2016 16:59

You've made me sad about Shireen again.

NeedACleverNN · 25/06/2016 17:32

That scene did actually horrify me. There were plenty of questionable ones that left me uncomfortable but despite knowing it was fake, it really did chill me to watch it

TheNorthRemembers · 25/06/2016 18:15

Children can survive greyscale, but Ygritte said that the freefolk puts children with greyscale out to die, because they are unclean and it is kinder to let them die Sad.

limitedperiodonly · 25/06/2016 18:50

Stannis told Shireen that he'd bought a doll from a travelling salesman and she'd slept with it clutched to her cheek. It was infected with greyscale.

He said he'd explored all sorts of remedies and something had worked. I think that was the scene where he said how much he loved her and she said she would do anything for him in turn. Looking back, he may have been asking her to say that.

In GoT I don't mind things like the murder of Shireen, or of Robert's children, including the baby in the brothel, or the burning of the shepherd's daughter by Drogon.

If they only killed people who deserved it, or adults, I think that would be more distressing because it would be pulling punches. People in GoT die in horrible ways. Most of them don't deserve it no matter who they are.

AliceInHinterland · 25/06/2016 19:47

There are a lot of children dying in cruel and unusual ways though!
I guess grayscale is like chicken pox or something, okay to catch when you're young (usually) though it might leave you scarred, but not good to catch as an adult.
I think as a PP said it will just lead to Jorah sacrificing himself in some way,

maggiso · 25/06/2016 20:19

Jorah jumped overboard to save Tyrion - who was pulled into the water by the infected grey men - presumably by his clothes. He did not tell Tyrion he had been touched on his skin. So in a way he has already sacrificed his health for someone. Am I right in remembering it was a different character 9was it Griff?) touched in a similar scene in the book, not Jorah?
There is talk that children (only) can survive greyscale. I think one of Gillys sister had it.
I wonder if Jorah will go back to Westeross, or indeed if we will see him again? Effectively Jon has the Mormont family sword, so I wonder if it will get back into Mormont hands. Maybe Valarian steel is a cure!

OlennasWimple · 25/06/2016 20:48

I remember that bit now

There are a few instances where a simple touch is important: the greyscale; the Night King touching Bran; there's a theory that all the Starks touched by Robert Baratheon when he visited Winterfell were all doomed...

OlennasWimple · 25/06/2016 20:49

Explain more about the Mormont sword, maggiso?

TheNorthRemembers · 25/06/2016 20:59

Olenna I have never heard the Bobby B death-touch theory. Sounds like a great theory.

EverySongbirdSays · 25/06/2016 21:14

Oleanna pretty simple Jeor Mormont gave Jon Snow his sword, he shouldn't have really it's the family sword, called Longclaw. The important part being that its good old Valyrian steel

OlennasWimple · 25/06/2016 21:30

Bobby B Grin

It was a Reddit theory but is being repeated more widely - here, for eg

When did Jeor give Jon the sword? And is that a bear on the end of then? (I thought it was a wolf!!)
