story here

OP posts:

ok, i dont watch BB, so i havent seen anything, but based on what ive read here and the link here, it looks to me like they are bullies. bullies always find something to use when they feel inferior to a person. they hate the fact she's pretty, has a good figure and has some sort of brain. they are using race to centre their bulling around. if she was white they would use something else.

i think they have a problem with the fact that she's prettier and brigher than they are. this is where a, how could i put it, passive (im not sure thats the word i'm looking for) form of racism (ignorance, lack of exposure, stupidity) comes in as they use racial steriotypes to put her down, not for her ethnicity but for the fact that they feel inferior to her.

i wish i was more articulate but i hope you get what i mean!

nearlymybeetrootday · 16/01/2007 16:42

If you think Shilpa is a DIVA - you want to meet some of the people I have worked with. She is a kitten in comaprison.

mytwopenceworth · 16/01/2007 16:43

oh, an i am surprised at that jo person bullying - i read somewhere that she was so badly bullied in school that she tried to kill herself. you'd think she'd be a bit more thoughtful.

nogoes · 16/01/2007 16:51

Thats a good point about Jo MTPW you would think she would know better.

NappiesGalore · 16/01/2007 16:51

twopence - i think you explained beutifully why they are being racist...

magicfarawaytree · 16/01/2007 16:59

jermaine was as racist as jack when he used the term 'white' he is articulate enough to be able to call someone common. common is common colour does not come into it unless you are being racially derogative.

magicfarawaytree · 16/01/2007 17:02

they girls are being racist in their bullying of shilpa- they probably do not mean to be, but they are picking every opportunity to latch onto things that are different from themselves, in this case as well as they way she looks, their is her ethnicity. if she had been a white vegetarian - anything that had could be associated either directly or stereotypically as vegetarian and negative would be used as ammuniction for taunting.

prettyfly1 · 16/01/2007 17:26

i dont watch the show on principle but i have to admit this has caught my attention. Sorry ladies and i dont mean to sound like the person who ever so constructively critised people who watched the show but if this really bothers you, and believe me from the sounds of it it should, the only way to show channel four and those concerned that it is not ok to behave this way is to switch off.

Caligula · 16/01/2007 17:40

Joy of joys, last night I video-taped that thing on Saudi infiltration of british mosques and have just watched it and guess what, Big Brother was on immediately afterwards so I got to see the chicken thing.

And my instant thought was, how the fuck are they all so damned stupid that they don't even know how to roast a bloody chicken. And there seemed to be some discussion about how to check that it was done.

FGS. I just can't get over it.

But good lord they are all terribly common, aren't they.

AitchTwoOh · 16/01/2007 17:40

i think that magic's right, in a way. they wouldn't have liked her anyway, that's for sure. too pretty, too classy, too erudite, too bossy. but she is indian and that's what they've picked on, so it's racist bullying as well as being bullying, iykwim?

funny thing is, i was just in the park chatting to an Indian woman who was complaining that her 3 year old wouldn't go to sleep until 10pm (should've directed her here) and that it is just as well that he sits still during BB.

i asked her what she thought of all the furore surrounding Shilpa and she just said 'i really don't know why people think that it would be any different in there to out here...'

at which point dd started screaming so no further discussion could be had, but i thought it was interesting ans rather puts it all into perspective, that we should all examine our own consciences...

Caligula · 16/01/2007 17:42

mtpw, know exactly what you're saying and agree with you completely.

dotcotton · 16/01/2007 17:43

We can't switch it off, because we have to, erm, monitor it..

Caligula · 16/01/2007 17:44

I wasn't even watching it until the chicken thing.

I might have to watch it this evening though... playing into Endemol's hands.

Tutter · 16/01/2007 17:45

aiiiiiiiiitch - please see my thread to you pretty pretty please?

AitchTwoOh · 16/01/2007 17:46

for the record i was told that white trash was originally a term that black people used about people of their own colour who were trying to be white.
in fact a black sociologist told me that, so it must be true... pppffffft.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 16/01/2007 17:48

I think Shilpa is lovely. I love the way she looks, walks, speaks and conducts herself. (And yes I am straight. )

Caligula · 16/01/2007 17:50

Ooh. So it's not the same as trailer trash then.

(My DB bought DD a Barbie trailer for Christmas. Hence lots of references to DD's white trash doll from everyone who sees it. I shall tell them how wrong they are.)

AitchTwoOh · 16/01/2007 17:50

sorry tutter, i can't find it on chat or active convos, where is it?

Tutter · 16/01/2007 17:51

will bump aitch

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 16/01/2007 17:59

they had a guy, some multi-cultural director or something, on 5 live just now, he was very much Asian as well, and he said "she and her agent knew exactly what they were signing up to. This will do her a huge amount of good, and it will do channel4 a huge amount of good. 3500 complaints is excellent as far as they're concerned". in other words, as I stated previously, c4 are rubbing their hands together. and Shilpa is being paid 350 grand for the privilage.

he also stated that she's not a school girl, she's an inteligent woman, and she's not made any complaints, neither have anyone from India complained, i.e. friends/family.

AitchTwoOh · 16/01/2007 18:01

but what does that prove?

JoolsToo · 16/01/2007 18:07

sounds like Jermaine is close to walking

fuzzywuzzy · 16/01/2007 18:07

I read an interview by her (Shilpa's) younger sister, she said it should have been Shilpa who walked out first not the other two (whoever they were cannot now remember).

Her sister was actually really upset, and said she would not have lasted.....

I don't honestly believe that Shilpa knew what she was going into at all. The Indian equivelant of CBB has proper famous people on the show, they are actually very civil to eachother, there have been fights but the other housemates step in if things get heated......

In India there's this really romantic view of England and the English....perhaps Shilpas experience will permanently scotch that little unrequited love affair. And directors will stop forking out millions to shoot dance scenes and/or entire movies in England......

filthymindedvixen · 16/01/2007 18:09

Somebody (flutterbee?) said earlier: ''I think that the 3 girls together are behaving like stupid bullying girls, they will look back on their behaviour and be ashamed.''
I wish that were true, but anyone ever met a buly who felt ashamed of themselves? (mayve in 20-30 years time but..)

I cannot watch this, I hate to see bullying of any kind and I cannot believe this passes for entertainment. And the worst thing is, 4,000 is a very small amount of people to complain compared with the millions who watch BB, who buy Heat etc because Jade and her ignorant ilk are featured inside, who make these nobodies into 'somebody' and provide them with a career out of being offensive and ignorant...FFS!

NappiesGalore · 16/01/2007 18:10

i think aitch's post re the lady in the park and her comment about it being the same in there as it is out here... yep. on the money if you ask me. sadly.
