as if

Handbagsrus · 16/01/2007 14:37

why is calling someone indian racist? she is from india so therefore she is indian isn't she? like from new zealand are kiwi, and from usa are american, australia are aussies. ireland are irish, why is everyone going on and on about race? {I agree about paki btw}

quadrophenia · 16/01/2007 14:39

I would object to being called 'the brit' I have a name and expect to be called it.

OP posts:
wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 16/01/2007 14:39

but it's probably all staged. they're probably being paid to talk to her like that and she's probably being paid to take it.

Every year on bb or cbb there's some kind of contravercy that ensures the programme makes it into the press and onto the news. that can't be coincidence.

LittleSarah · 16/01/2007 14:39

I assume because it was not just calling her Indian but 'the Indian' and the generally derogatory attitude they have displayed towards her and her culture.

Pablothelittleredfox · 16/01/2007 14:39

And how on earth is 'Shilpa' difficult to get your head round? 'Shil' and 'pa' - not tricky at all is it?

Blu · 16/01/2007 14:39

It's racist because they are belittling her / rejecting her because of characteristics they imagine are soley do do with race / ethnicity. And which, furthermore are innacurate and spurious.

If you hear someone sneer at someone's accent and then refuse to eat the food they have cooked for you because you have heard that 'they' (people of that race) eat with their hands and you imply that therefore 'they' (people of that race) are not clean...what would you call it? And she presumably cooked the food in front of them ...with immaculately clean hands.

Racist bullying in my book!

The Guardian says the lovely Jack called her a ct, not 'P'

LittleSarah · 16/01/2007 14:40

I have only seen one show (and I don't plan on watching anymore) but I cannot believe it is staged.

quadrophenia · 16/01/2007 14:40

apparently that is what is being said but it definately sounds like an 'ee' sound at the end of the word, as it is only partially bleeped.

Saturn74 · 16/01/2007 14:41

But Jade's mother referred to Shilpa as 'The Indian' and refused to use her name.
That's not the same as saying "Shilpa is Indian", which is fine, as is "Jade is English" etc.

Greensleeves · 16/01/2007 14:41

Thick as fuck, the lot of 'em.

Handbagsrus · 16/01/2007 14:42

but she was making fun of the london accent when they said whale, why is it ok for her to make fun of the london accent and londoners not to comment on her accent?

Kelly1978 · 16/01/2007 14:42

I haven;t seen any racism, but I do think that the other housemates should be a bit more appeciative of cultural differences. Their narrow minded attitude is terrible, they are so dismissive of her at times.
I don't think that jackiey was racist neither, Shilpa is Indian, but it did really annoy me about the name thing too. I can't believe how much fuss she made over it.

Kelly1978 · 16/01/2007 14:43

It's their attitude that is the problem. People can have a laugh, but the others seem very snide about it all and they aren't being humerous at all, jsut bitchy.

quadrophenia · 16/01/2007 14:43

we haven't seen much of the racist behaviour as BB has been heavily edited.

OP posts:
Handbagsrus · 16/01/2007 14:43

shilpa was making fun of dirks name and saying what a silly name it was and that she couldn't say it

AitchTwoOh · 16/01/2007 14:44

c4 is not rubbing it's hands together, it;s shitting itself.

if you think somone is less than you because of where they come from, you're a racist. being ignorant and stupid, as i have said before on the other thread, merely goes some distance to explaining why they are racist... it doesn't get them off the hook for it.

and shinyhappypeople, you didn't see it on the show last night but in fact Jade's quite chat with Shilpa was a sustained attack lasting about 40 minutes. mind you, i thought the edited version looked pretty bad too.

madmarchhare · 16/01/2007 14:45

I havent actually watched any of this tosh, maybe I need to see it in its full glory, which will never happen might I add.

Agree that Channel 4 will be loving it.

Handbagsrus · 16/01/2007 14:45

I understood that they said whale didn't you? If I wanted to feel offended I would if someone came to london and then laughed at my accent but got all precious about their accent.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 16/01/2007 14:45

but you can't tell me that these people, most of whom have been on tv at some point, don't know what the repercussions of their words/actions will be? These aren't jo public off the street who have never had any dealings with the media, these are people who, at some point in their lives, will have been scrutinised by the media, so why would any of them want to be seen to be racists if they weren't being paid for doing so.

LittleSarah · 16/01/2007 14:46

Exactly, attitude and tone are important too. You can make fun and tease someone, or you can be nasty and snide.

The treatment of Shilpa is the latter.

Greensleeves · 16/01/2007 14:46

I can't work up a good indignant sweat about anything Jade Goody and her ilk come out with. It's unfair to expect anything of her really. If she had one more brain cell she'd be a cheeseplant. The only real problem with her is that she's On The Telly.

ledodgy · 16/01/2007 14:47

'Paki' as far as i'm concerned is definately racist. However i'm in two minds about if referring to someone as 'the Indian' is. While it doesn't sit right with me if someone said 'the American' I wouldn't think anything of it.

Handbagsrus · 16/01/2007 14:47

well I think she was being nasty about whale quite frankly
