Leaps aboard the good ship Tormund / Brienne

They are perfect. Renly who?

Dany was cursed by Mirri Maz Duur thus:

"When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east," said Mirri Maz Duur. "When the seas go dry and mountains blow in the wind like leaves. When your womb quickens again, and you bear a living child. Then he will return, and not before."

There is some interesting theorizing on what this means [http://www.westeros.org/Citadel/Prophecies/Entry/1799 here]]

WeDoNotSow · 18/05/2016 13:16

I said in the last thread I think Dany is going mad like her Dad.
Khals, you are abiding by your traditions, in your sacred city? About me, a foreigner, who broke those traditions when I didn't return here when Khal Drogo died? Well you know what, you can fucking BURN, you can ALL BURN.

Dany has a lot of empathy, but it is totally lost amidst her selfishness and self righteousness, and she has shown us that she is not above torture/murder if she sees it as 'just'. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree indeed.

Ps I quite like Dany, I hope she does go mad with power, or creates hell with initial good intentions.
Much more interesting than saving the day with her dragons, which I feel is too predictable

WeDoNotSow · 18/05/2016 13:25

TheNorthRemembers Learning Ned lied is probably one of my favourite things that's ever happened on the show!
Even though reading all the books, it was just a given for me he was honest and honourable. A reminder that not everything is as it seems, and you shouldn't assume things/take them at face value. It made me feel silly for not thinking it sooner, but I enjoyed it massively, like a really good twist at the end of a book/film.

TheNorthRemembers · 18/05/2016 13:26

Welcome, everyone!

pyrowall · 18/05/2016 13:44

I've been rewatching earlier seasons and I've noticed a 'mad' streak in Dany, burning of the slave masters in Astapor, the master 'walk of shame', burning the witch who 'resurrected' Khal Drogo. She has absolutely no remorse or emotion in her face - but she thinks it's just and therefore she is right.

I've got a horrible feeling she's got more Aerys traits than we'd realised and she'll end up worse than Viserys.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 18/05/2016 16:24

That would be very very interesting! Like that idea a lot!

Abraid2 · 18/05/2016 16:28

I don't know. They made it clear that about the best she could expect was to be raped by lots of men.

Why wouldn't you want to get out? And they weren't going to let her out unless she killed them, were they?

JonSnowsBeardClippings · 18/05/2016 16:40

Daenarys never consented to marry drogo and she didn't consent to the condition of living in vaes dothrak forever if he died. The dothraki kidnapped her and told her they were going to rape her to death. I don't think under those circumstances that she was unreasonable exactly...

FTFOAFOSM · 18/05/2016 17:04

No, she hasn't been unreasonable in her reasoning, but without that perspective it DOES just look like she's burning anyone who opposes her will. That's not the same as saying she ought not to have frazzled them all - and tbh, I would do the same thing (if I'd thought of it, which I probably wouldn't have), but heck, when you have a card like that, you play it - it just so happened to look specfuckingtacular while she did it.

AgingJuvenileBinkyHuckaback · 18/05/2016 17:22

From the perspective of what
we saw on screen, the Dothraki bosses totally had it coming. But the writers did fiddle things a bit by having the people who Danaerys had already decided to murder for her own ends conveniently reveal themselves to be evil exponents of rape culture. It is awfully handy that all the people who stand in Dany's way or have something she wants just happen to be awful awful people who totally deserve burning to death.

TheUnsullied · 18/05/2016 17:35

Dany was justified this time after the talk of raping her, etc. But other times where she's come down hard and not struggled with her conscience after she's had far flimsier justification. Like when she made a deal to swap the unsullied for one of her dragons then killed all the masters instead. She has some very large advantages, a bit of a mad streak and now has a shit load of Dothraki at her disposal. It'll either win her the throne or unite her enemies.

JeepersMcoy · 18/05/2016 17:37

I think Dany is interesting because she does have justification for what she does. However, following that through to the extreme doesn't always get the right results. We see the conflict between her desire to exact justice with the slavers and the need to find a way to work with them or lose her kingdom. That is what makes her partnership with tyrion so perfect. He brings pragmatism that she needs to rule well and I think he will be able to hold her in check as it were.

AgingJuvenileBinkyHuckaback · 18/05/2016 17:59

She was justified this time in retrospect, but she'd made her plans and set the trap before they said a word.

TheUnsullied · 18/05/2016 19:03

Yep, I get the impression she finds justification for things after she decides to do them...which is precisely what I'd expect from a ruler on a power trip! There was no reason for her to even speak when she went in front of the khals, she was going to burn them regardless. She pushed buttons to provoke threats.

Abraid2 · 18/05/2016 20:15

Thing is, she had to make the plans beforehand. If they had been less aggressive she might have decided to hold back, I suppose. But her experiences of them as a tribe in the past and what the old crone told her was likely to happen meant she would have been mad to have waited to see what was in store.

ILikeToClean · 18/05/2016 20:19

Agree that Dany is a bit crazy, but I think she just totally believes that she is the true ruler and therefore anything she needs to do to get her to the iron throne is justified. She has made some bad decisions and hasn’t always listened to her advisers but is young. She is Danerys Stormborn, first of her name, the Unburnt, ruler of this and that, blah blah blah, which gives her the right to do what she wants, nothing will stand in the way of that!

JeepersMcoy · 18/05/2016 20:29

They had basically kidnapped and imprisoned her against her will and the old lady had made it clear that bad things would be happening if she didn't do as told and spend the rest of her life hidden away. I think that alone would count as justification for being pretty pissed and setting some people on fire. I think the rape threats just sealed the deal. I think i might be pretty darn tempted to burn the crap out of some people if I found myself in a similar position (and assuming I was impervious to fire of course).

ClashCityRocker · 18/05/2016 20:52

I agree she was justified in that regard...but I also think it would be interesting to see her descent into madness.

After all, the early targs seemed to be very much 'do what I say, coz I've got dragons'...I can see her going the same way.

She walks a very fine line between justifiable behaviour and being a monster. On the one hand, she is a saviour and freer of slaves; on the other hand when crossed she is absolutely merciless.

One thing I do wonder about - King Robert wanted her assassinated when she found out she was pregnant, so clearly realised that the remaining targs were a threat.

Now she's conquered half of Estoros (or whatever it's called), has an army of the most deadliest soldiers going, three dragons and is calling herself queen of the Andels, rightful ruler of the seven kingdoms and no-one gives, well, a mummer's fart as Tyrion might say.

I think earlier on in one of the series it was mentioned that she might have dragons and this was dismissed as foolishness, but surely there must by now be so many reports that it's harder to dismiss?

It seems very odd that the threat is just allowed to grow and grow, mind you I suppose they have there hands full enough in kings landing.

ClashCityRocker · 18/05/2016 20:54

Maybe westeros will decide they've had enough of crazy monarchy and become a republic. They don't have much luck with their royal family.

Trills · 18/05/2016 21:05

she just totally believes that she is the true ruler and therefore anything she needs to do to get her to the iron throne is justified

Probably due to her upbringing with her power-obsessed insane brother...

ClashCityRocker · 18/05/2016 21:19

I wonder if she'd be a good queen. I can't imagine her ruling westeros - it would be so strange to see her in the red keep.

I'm excited to see her come over though. I'm not sure how well received she'd be - I can't imagine anyone will be happy with an army of (what the westerosi perceive to be) savages and former slaves taking over the seven kingdoms.

In my mind, there are two big battles left - Dany taking the iron throne, and the battle against the white walkers.

MaterofDragons · 18/05/2016 21:20

Faced with all those khals and their plans to have her raped by the horses Shock I can't say I blame her for tipping over the lanterns

Abraid2 · 18/05/2016 21:32

Who would we have as first president of Westeros if turned into a republic?

Probably still Tyrion for me.

Maergery's grandmother?

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 18/05/2016 21:35

Bronn. No point in ditching the monarchy if you still pick a member of the ruling houses to be President. Or Greyworm.
