(After our antenatal thread became somewhat hijacked with talk of Doctor Who)

Hello,

My name's (usually) MsMoss and I've been a Doctor Who Geek for over twenty years now. I grew up with McCoy, stood by it through its years in the wilderness and now watch, proud but slightly bemused, as it is no longer shameful to admit you're a fan.

Anyone else with me? You love the new series but don't want the old to be forgotten?

Join me, stand up and be counted!

i think martha's been surprisingly good actually, rose was a tough act to follow.

Peachy · 02/06/2007 22:11

I like Mrtha- and I agree that another Doctor-cant-help-them ending to the trips of an Assistant (like not being able to get to Rose) wuld not only be extremely annoying, but somewhat put th whole omniscient- yet- likeable superhero bit in doubt.

I mean, Superman always caught Lois!!

Oh no, I think she's got gumption.

I wouldn't want to see Rose back - I felt she travelled with the Doctor because she was focused on him, but that Martha, even though she is smitten with the Doctor, is doing it because she knows she can't have him, so she's grabbing all the adventure she can.
I think she's been quite clever in places, and coped with the racism in the past two episodes very well.

Plus Dh fancies her, so I get away with drooling over DT, so it's all good.

foxcub · 02/06/2007 22:30

I think I'd be much better as his companion. Its about time they had an older woman. Oh, and a Ginger person!

MrsWho · 02/06/2007 22:32

BUt then the doctor would be jealous

Shrinkinglily · 02/06/2007 22:38

I'm a wreck after that show- It was so brilliant but painful! I'm still trying to recover!

nachomama · 02/06/2007 22:54

all you lucky whospotters. 11 mo old DS generally does NOT let me watch my favourite show. so i've missed loads this season. (mostly on video- though we've only managed to find time to sit down and watch 2 of these together {Dh, not DS, that is}. having not seen part 1 last week, i was set not to watch tonight's episode. but despite my best intentions, the lure of the doctor sucked me in. DS was fairly low maintenance and actually danced to the theme-tune. (if you can call hanging on to my shirt whilst flapping the other arm and shaking his butt dancing)

can't wait to see part 1- i did say to DH that it looked like one of the best storylines to date!

martha's ok, though i think she's getting a pretty rough deal by hair, make-up and costume. i really quite liked her as the mad vacant typist in torchwood at the end of previous series.

foxinsocks · 03/06/2007 10:32

I thought it was ok (rated it as very good but not excellent).

I felt the ending was rushed - like they'd tried to squeeze 15 minutes into 5 (and I would, personally, like to see more of the dark side of Dr Who) - it didn't move me either (in fact, the children and I were shouting 'hurry up and open the clock for crying out loud!').

If anything, I thought it showcased Jessica Hynes and Martha (who I thought were both excellent).

belgo · 03/06/2007 10:35

thought last night's episode was really good. Interesting not to have Doctor Who as the main character for once.

The dark side of the Doctor - this was rather glossed over, could have been more interesting.

Thought the references to the first world war were well done.

Katymac · 03/06/2007 10:42

There have been several "ginger" assistant - at least I think so

Turlow (sp prob?) was very ginger

& several of the girls were red heads I'm sure

nachomama · 03/06/2007 10:46

Turlow was definitely ginger. In the dogend days of Dr Who, Bonnie Langford was another redhead, but DH can't remember character's name off top-of-head.

JackieNo · 03/06/2007 10:53

I thought last night's and the previous week were brilliant. Had me in tears too.

Am I over-thinking this, do you think? In the scene where the schoolboys were defending the school against the attacking scarecrows, the music was boys singing 'He who would valiant be', the first 2 lines of which are:

'He who would valiant be ?gainst all disaster,
Let him in constancy follow the Master'

Do you think they chose that hymn because it happened to contain that line?

foxinsocks · 03/06/2007 10:58

that hymn was in last week's too - think Motherinferior made that master point (great minds think alike!)

I didn't like all the angst. Just bloody well get on with it man!

JackieNo · 03/06/2007 10:59

Ah, didn't spot that - I tend to dip in and out of this thread, mostly just after I watch it on a Saturday.

foxinsocks · 03/06/2007 11:01

btw, not sure if you saw on roisin's thread, thanks for pointing out those dalek biscuit cutter things. My two had great fun making loads of daleks, exterminating everything and then scoffing the lot! (they even made a special Dalek Sec one for their dad!)

WideWebWitch · 03/06/2007 11:05

Those hymns really get to you don't they?

foxinsocks · 03/06/2007 11:10

yes, it made me realise that my children will never know a hymn. Both dh and I went to schools where hymns were sung every day (and I was a church chorister for years as a child - yes, you can stop giggling now!) so know virtually every hymn off by heart.

Some hymns are beautifully haunting.

foxcub · 03/06/2007 11:23

Foxinsox - where can we buy Dalek biscuits cutters from??? My Dcs would love to make edible Daleks!!

foxinsocks · 03/06/2007 11:28

in the section of the supermarket (I got ours in Sainsburys - apparently they are in Waitrose too) where all the ready to bake cake mixture packets are

it's made by Greens - it's got a Dalek on the front and is a biscuit making set.

Tbh, you can make biscuits using the dough in the set (you mix with water and they have orange icing and some ricicle things you stick on top) but we got it for the cutters - the biscuits weren't that tasty (made from the packet mix) and would probably work better with a standard homemade biscuit dough.

foxcub · 03/06/2007 11:30

Ooh yummy - I will definately get some for the Dcs. Thanks!

JackieNo · 03/06/2007 11:33

Thanks foxinsocks - I haven't actually made any yet, the pack is still intact (though I have taken the cutter out to have a look at it).

foxinsocks · 03/06/2007 11:38

lol Jackie - the cutters are v good aren't they!

foxcub - if you shop at the big Sainburys in Hampton, the set is right on the bottom shelf of the cake mixtures (next to the Thomas set). I thought there weren't any left but the children spotted a few packets hidden right at the back so if you don't see them at first, you may need to get right down and look for them.
