(After our antenatal thread became somewhat hijacked with talk of Doctor Who)

Hello,

My name's (usually) MsMoss and I've been a Doctor Who Geek for over twenty years now. I grew up with McCoy, stood by it through its years in the wilderness and now watch, proud but slightly bemused, as it is no longer shameful to admit you're a fan.

Anyone else with me? You love the new series but don't want the old to be forgotten?

Join me, stand up and be counted!

Ok you lot, excuse me for gatecrashing, Dr Who not my thing!, but I've just asked dh what the name of the very first cheif dalek was called and he can't remember! Its bugging him now and its all my fault. Personally I couldn't give a flying you know what, but theres a prize for the fastest person to 'name that dalek!' READY, STEADY, GO! I thankyou!

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 22/04/2007 19:24

Am about to watch last night's at 8pm on BBC3. Are the dalek's very scary? Because I still have residual issues from childhood.. didn't deal well with last series' daleks and have never had counselling for my dalek-phobia. DD (8) is going to hold my hand,... but I am not at ALL happy at the way the glide upstairs now.. it's seem wrong! Is there any of that in last night's?

Mossie · 22/04/2007 19:25

What do you mean by the very first Chief Dalek,k do you mean this series? The one last night was Dalek Sec, the creator of the Daleks was Davros and in the films they had an Emperor Dalek too... hth!

Mossie · 22/04/2007 19:28

ShinyHappy.. not too much gliding last night! Have a look at the episode page and on the bottom right you'll see a review of the episode, done by children, which includes a figure they call the "fear factor" which gives you an idea of how scary the children found it.

Mossie · 22/04/2007 19:30

Mrs Who... ikwym about Mickey! Especially that scene in, was it Age of Steel? when he is in his undies!

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 22/04/2007 19:32

Mossie.. thanks. Am going there now. Would be handier if they had a parents' Fear Factor too...

RustyBear · 22/04/2007 19:38

The emperor dalek wasn't just in the films mossie - he was in The Evil of the Daleks - Patrick Ttroughton 1967 Victoria's first story.
So on our timeline, the first 'chief dalek'
was the Emperor, but on the daleks timeline it was Davros (though technically he wasn't actually a dalek himself)

Mossie · 22/04/2007 19:39

Well, fwiw, I thought it was quite scary... until the end, which was a bit of a let down for me tbh!

I'll not give anything away, don't worry!

Mossie · 22/04/2007 19:40

Oooh I didn't know that RustyBear, I thought they'd just introduced him for the films!

RustyBear · 22/04/2007 19:49

There are some advantages to being old mossie -having seen all of Dr Who is one of them....
Evil of the daleks was on during my last term at primary school(and I was in love with Frazer Hines)

Mossie · 22/04/2007 19:59

Well I am a bit I have to admit... have you seen all the missing stories then?

My doctor growing up was Sylvester McCoy so you can see why I might be !!

MrsWho · 22/04/2007 20:03

MOssie -and in Army of Ghosts/Doomsday with his big gun Mickey Smith defending the earth!

HAve added most of Dr Who /Torchwood to the hunks thread

RustyBear · 22/04/2007 20:10

I have seen every episode either live or on video (mostly commercial, but some pirate ones that a friend of DH's got hold of) or at conventions.

MrsWho · 22/04/2007 20:21

rustybear

Do you still go to conventions? does anyone else?

Fubsy · 22/04/2007 20:25

Oi Mrs Who, get over to Chat. Norksbride has got brad pitts dick waiting for you!

RustyBear · 22/04/2007 20:30

Haven't been for ages but now Dc's are older I want to start going again. We did go to a Gerry Anderson one a couple of years ago.

We were at the really big Longleat '20 years of a timelord'one in 1983 - that was really good.

MrsWho · 22/04/2007 20:32

Fubsy Shh! I have been and seen it anyway

Rusty -how do you find out about them ? and what happens there?

Fubsy · 22/04/2007 20:40

hee hee - sorry, couldnt resist!

redbeki · 22/04/2007 20:46

Do you think Captain Jack is the other timelord?
(Face of Boe,said to dr.'you are not the only one'!

MrsWho · 22/04/2007 20:51

I am going with the master , though if Jack is immortal the Dr wouldn't be alone anyway

HAs anyone seen the interview on the Saxon site? mentions a brother I hope not

RustyBear · 22/04/2007 21:11

Well, as I said I haven't been for years, but we were members of the Dr Who Appreciation Society, which was a tiny little club initially - it expanded after Marvel's Dr Who Weekly started (later Dr Who Monthly) - the main feature writer, Jeremy Bentham, was a founder member of the Appreciation Society.

The first convention was in a church hall in Battersea, the second (which was the first one we went to) was at a school in South London somewhere - I think it was Bromley. It was a bit of a disaster for the organisers, because it clashed with a big general sci-fi convention in London & they couldn't get any Doctors, and the organiser had a row with the school caretaker & wasn't allowed on the premises - he had to have runners to tell him what was going on (before the days of mobiles of course)But because it was so small we got a chance to talk to Katy Manning (Jo Grant) & Dick Mills from the Radiophonic Workshop, who gave a great talk about sound effects (did you know the original Tardis dematerialisation noise was a doorkey being run up & down a piano string & slowed down?)

When the DWAS got bigger they started organising the Panopticon conventions - we went to Panopticon 3 (1979 I think) in London- and they got involved with the 20 year Longleat do.We sort of lost touch after the children arrived & the society is pretty small now, if it actually still exists - the website is very out of date.

Conventions usually have screenings of old episodes, talks by various backroom staff & by some of the actors & discussion groups with fans - the Longlet one had a great session with John Pertwee & Patrick Troughton who kept up their Three Doctors rivalry. They also have auctions of props & exhibitions & fancy dress competitions, and of course lots of merchandise for sale.

I'm not sure what's going on now, but a friend of DH's is involved with various cult tv conventions so I could probably find out.

This is probably boring everyone to death so I'd better stop reliving my youth now ... I expect you've all gone to bed anyway

MrsWho · 22/04/2007 21:38

I have started reading DWM

RustyBear · 22/04/2007 22:11

We have every issue from the time it started as Dr Who Weekly until (I think)about a year ago. It must have started around 1979/80 because we were living in Abingdon & I remember going into the newsagents at the end of the road to order it & being asked if it was for my little boy. I had to admit that it was for DP (now DH)
DH kept on buying it for ages while Dr Who was off the screens simply because he had every issue & he thought it would fold soon without new episodes & he didn't want to be left just a few issues short of a full set. But since he's been away at MIL's so much, he missed a few issues & I think he's stopped getting it now.

MrsWho · 22/04/2007 22:21

I bawk at the price though Those I have bought I have resold on ebay

RustyBear · 22/04/2007 22:32

I do wonder how much DH's entire collection might fetch on ebay.....
