Don't know if my heart can stand much more of reading these books. Bloody hell, such nerve wracking events.
I'll just say one word for those that have read Voyager - Geneva! Shock

TheHiphopopotamus · 20/05/2016 20:16

snozzle that's the bit I was referring to up thread that put me off Jamie a bit, even allowing for different standards from when the books were written. Didn't like it at all. I think Voyager is when his character starts to change.

And if you're shocked at that, there's a (not so) lovely surprise waiting for you later on Wink

snozzlemaid · 20/05/2016 20:34

I agree. He needs to learn some bloody control.
I'm hoping that when they film this storyline they'll change it for the better and keep tv Jamie as perfect as he has been so far.
TV Jamie was portrayed much better during the spanking Claire incident than he was in the books, so fingers crossed. I really didn't like the violence in that scene in the book at all.

MistressFraser · 20/05/2016 21:38

Really not enjoying DIA, but basically just skimming it for plot - hoping that will stop me crying. And despite some dodgy Jamie stuff in Voyager, I liked the bit of that I read much more. But DG absolutely knows what a sadist is - how can she put her characters through so much and sleep at night because sadly they are real people to me?

MistressFraser · 20/05/2016 21:40

Will I miss out if I stop at the end of Voyager? I wonder if it will make it last three seasons anyway - how would they film the rest of the books?

TheHiphopopotamus · 20/05/2016 21:56

I loved the first book, skim read DIA and Voyager and properly read Drums of Autumn, which focuses more on R and B (not the music scene 😉) and enjoyed it. Started The Fiery Cross, but DG's in-depth description of every one's bodily functions and the tedium of the ins and outs of Claire's working day are making me want to gouge my eyes out with a spoon and throw them on the fire.

I don't think I care enough about the characters in the books to carry on reading, if I'm honest. I can't connect the later books with the characters on the series. I also have zero interest in the historical event that they've found themselves in.

I don't think they'll go past Drums of Autumn if they carry on with the series or maybe they'll deviate and go down their own path. I also think DoA finishes the series off quite nicely if you don't fancy going any further.

snozzlemaid · 20/05/2016 22:10

I'm absolutely loving Voyager, so will keep going with them. Really hoping that I continue to love them all as much. I'll be sad if I don't after investing so much in this story.

hudyerwheesht · 20/05/2016 23:04

Is there anyone else on here now that hasn't read the books or has only read the first one?

Drywhitethanks · 20/05/2016 23:08

Photo shoot is bloody horrendous .....but he still looks gorgeous despite the terrible clothes, all wrong , agree rough up a bit and get a kilt and boots back on Sam.

Snozzle I think we are at the same part of Voyager. The G bit seemed dubious and a bit risky but I did give him the benefit of the doubt. Have got a bit stuck since starting Vikings, but need a fix soon.

I just can't see how they can go beyond season 2 although I'd love them to go on forever and haven't read all of the books how will they keep it fresh? Season 1was all about them falling in love and getting to know each other, season 2 the "realities" of marriage, pregnancy etc.......after that what will happen? Much as I'd love it to keep going I would hate the series to go the way of the books from what you've said here and end up getting bored of J and C Sad

Drywhitethanks · 20/05/2016 23:09

hudyer I didn't read the first books, jim ned the latter part of DiA and am skimming Voyager, not sure I enjoy the books as much as the series tbh

MistressFraser · 20/05/2016 23:12

I'm sceptical that they could make them age convincingly to get too far. Surely they wouldn't recast? On the other hand, they have to do Voyager, because it would be terrible cruelty to leave it at the end of DIA.

TheHiphopopotamus · 20/05/2016 23:20

Well, aren't they supposed to be about 40-ish in Voyager? To be fair, CB and SH are mid thirties irl, so they aren't far off now. Bang a grey streak in Claire's hair and bosh!

The show's producers are definitely planning the logistics of another series but whether or not it gets renewed, who knows? It's doing fairly well for Starz st the moment though, so I think it's looking likely.

Drywhitethanks · 21/05/2016 10:13

Agree, both SH ans CB have those sort of faces that can do young and more mature.....40s won't be difficult. Looking back at early episodes they do "young" quite well......

Snozzlemaid I'm sending you a PM need to discuss something and don't want to spoil it for others

snozzlemaid · 21/05/2016 11:21

Dry PM'd you back Smile
I really hope they age them well. It could ruin it if they look obviously made up to have aged.

Jane054848 · 21/05/2016 11:34

DG loves the series and does defend it deviating from the books when people complain about it. Other than the one mysterious incident... I think it will be something to do with the return of Black Jack ....

Snoozle that picture is amazing. Oh why can't Jamie be shirtless ALL THE TIME??!

I don't know if he is gay but although it is pathetic and awful that someone would have to keep quiet about it to get work I wouldn't judge him if he did. Gay men don't get cast as romantic leads, full stop. Or not in American stuff anyway.

HyacinthBouquetNo1 · 21/05/2016 17:49

Still undecided whether i will watch season2, i did enjoy season 1 but imo the books are a hundred times better, i just cannot warm to the actors (not their fault) but i have images in my head of the book and they just dont match up. Think that is the problem of reading the books first. I just cannot imagine SH as Jamie, he does not seem tough, hard enough, i imagine him as a red haired Liam Neeson. Same for CB, she has captured Claire personality wise but looks wise, is nothing like how she is described in the book, and to me, its like watching a completely different show

I am halfway through book 5 atm Jamie is 46 and Claire 51 so not sure how they will age on screen, i will not say any more as might be spoilers!

Drywhitethanks · 21/05/2016 23:01

Can't wait for tomorrow's episode...loads to do before I can watch it in the evening.....feeling nervous

Sad episode 😢 CB was amazing.

Not sure the bit with King Louis made much sense though. 'Here are two men charged with deploying the dark arts. Can you, Madame Fraser, a witch, decide who must die?' But it's ok, because Claire is a white witch Hmm

'Oh, and I slept with King Louis to get you out of the Bastille. 'Well, needs must and all that, Claire.'

Also, not digging Jamie with a beard, reminds me too much of DH.

But all that said, some fantastic acting from CB. Very, very moving.

And yay! They're off back to Scotland, at bloody last!

snozzlemaid · 22/05/2016 11:28

I love a beard normally but SH really doesn't suit a full beard like that. Thank god he had a shave.
Very sad episode and yes CB was amazing. I wanted to see a bit more emotion from SH though.
And yes, they're heading back to Scotland!

TheHiphopopotamus · 22/05/2016 12:00

Wasn't Jamie a bit more pissed off about her shagging King Louis in the book? I seem to remember J & C going to a field and having sex and Jamie somehow 'knew' what she's done and he told her never to sleep with anyone but him. Or have I made that up?

I think that was probably a stick on beard. SH isn't ginger in real life and I don't think he'd have had time to grow one for a three minute scene. I prefer something in between clean shaven and beard for Jamie, I think. (I've spent far too much time thinking about this already Grin)

NoPowerInTheVerseCanStopMe · 22/05/2016 13:28

A few minutes in and I'm crying. Probably not the best episode to watch at 29 weeks pregnant! Catriona Balfe just gets better and better, these can't have been easy scenes to film.

AKAmyself · 22/05/2016 15:34

amazing episode and i'm so glad they gave it all to Claire. Losing a child is a devastating experience in a woman's life and yet so often it is "resolved" in 20 minutes of screen tim. Amazing acting by CB and lovely, understated and really intense emotion from SH at the end.

The whole bit with the comte st germain was ludicrous but then, hard to avoid given the source material....

I was really touched by how much people love claire - something that doesn't come across in the books: from Maitre Raymond, to Fergus, to Mother Hildegarde, to Suzette and Magnus when she comes home. And Louise - in one beautiful scene, the show conveyed a depth of care and love that 50 pages of country hospitality in the book did not even touch on. And much as I would have liked to see claire and jamie lying naked on a field at the end, in the book it did feel WAAAY too soon for them to rush back into that sort of intimacy after the trauma and separation they have gone through. Nor did I understand Jamie's anger at her sleeping with Louis - not like she had any choice, or else he'd be growing a pretty beard in the bastille until the end of his days.

So, without making too much of the "OMG this show is so much better than the books" convo... well, I love this show and I'm really happy they have given this episode the space it needed. There is A LOT of plot to cover in the remains 5 episodes and I am glad they didn't give in to the temptation of just moving things along.

AKAmyself · 22/05/2016 15:59

oh and they're back in Scotland next week! and Jenny will be there! yay!

TheHiphopopotamus · 22/05/2016 16:05

Agree about Magnus, Suzette and especially Louise. Very touching and dealt with a lot better than the book. Don't think I could have stood it if Jamie had been angry with Claire at the end of all that.
