Fantastic episode! Great drama, great knee porn, great everything!

I think this one is 12 eps. The last one was 16.

Dollius - the word she uses that really annoys me is "exigent".

Jane054848 · 16/05/2016 08:05

Oh Drywhite ... I think it was about Fergus in the book but you don't find out about much later. I think the prostitute thing was just what the servants etc thought.

TheHiphopopotamus · 16/05/2016 08:18

For those skim reading the books, will you be going back and reading them again more thoroughly? I skim read 2 and 3, I think coz I couldn't wait to find out what had happened and I'm considering going back to them once S2 ends.

And I take your irritation at the use of the word 'abstracted' and raise you every description of everyone's bodily scent in minute detail. And also, do we really need a description of the sound of someone's breast milk hitting a tin cup as they express? Or do we need to to know how full of milk and painful etc. they are every time.

Plus, I think we need to send the uk's medical practioners to whatever school Claire trained at as she can diagnose (and cure! Using only 18th C herbs!) conditions such as blindness, loss of limbs and even death! (I may be exaggerating for effect, but I'm not far off).

All that said, I've picked up Fiery Cross again, and now the Gathering is over at last! I feel like we're finally getting somewhere.

pixieg1rl · 16/05/2016 09:00

I got irritated whenever she introduced a new character they always had to look so odd. Lots of weird faces, never anyone plain or unremarkable.

KateR1980 · 16/05/2016 09:28

Sorry, that was me that pointed out the frequency of Charles saying 'mark me' Blush

I only saw bits of this week's episode as the baby woke up so I'm waiting for it to come on again to see it in full. I have read all the books but ages ago so I can't remember much detail and certainly not I the detail some of you seem to! May have to reread

Lessstressedhemum · 16/05/2016 10:22

Was about poor wee Fergus in the book, but it is a good while before you find that out. There is a good reason Jamie Makes a eunuch of Black Jack, but it only fuels Claire's fixation with Frank.

hudyerwheesht · 16/05/2016 10:31

But if Jamie has made a eunuch of BJR - sounds as though my fears for Fergus weren't unfounded Sad - how is he going to produce Frank's ancestor?

Confused
Lessstressedhemum · 16/05/2016 10:41

Aha, now that would be a spoiler.

Dollius01 · 16/05/2016 11:02

Yes, that really would be a spoiler, but can i just say ...

I know I know I know !!!

Lessstressedhemum · 16/05/2016 11:50

Claire's medical exploits, especially in the later books, really, really annoy me. Antibiotics for goodness sake! No wonder folk think she's a witch. It's all just so unlikely and ridiculous. One of the other things that really annoys me is that she has spent all these years living amongst highlanders, has picked up the superstitions etc, but hasn't in the slightest picked up the manner of speech. I can only think of one instance in any of the books where she so much as says "aye". I just think some of it would have rubbed off on her. I know it's a literary device and an integral part of her character, but come on.

DG does like all her sight, sound and smell descriptions. I bet Jamie smells glorious, though, all strong and manly, even when he hasn't bathed for months!

hudyerwheesht · 16/05/2016 11:52

Aha, now that would be a spoiler

Gah! Do I have to wait long to find out??

Lessstressedhemum · 16/05/2016 11:56

Quite a while on the books, perhaps not so long on TV, the way they are rattling through it.

TheHiphopopotamus · 16/05/2016 15:00

I like some description as I like to feel immersed in the time period, but DG doesn't half go overboard. Same with the use of Gaelic every other sentence (which it would appear Claire is now fluent in Hmm) and its interpretation directly after in italics. I think DG must have done a Gaelic correspondence course for this book.

And for BJR getting stabbed in the balls - highly satisfying! I'd forgotten all about that Grin

MistressFraser · 16/05/2016 16:04

I have to say that I was expecting the book to be fairly poorly written - but it's better than I thought, although I am spotting those writerly tics you mention. I have only read the first one though - and that copy had to be returned to the library today, while I wait weeks for DIA... I am content to hear any spoilers - especially happy ones. Smile

One question: does it ever get resolved in the books who the figure was that Frank saw in Inverness looking up at Claire's window?

TheHiphopopotamus · 16/05/2016 16:25

Gabaldon has said that that little mystery will be resolved in the next book, as yet unpublished I think.

If anyone wants to know any spoilers, I'm happy to answer any questions via dm and I can give yes or no answers if you like. Although, in some ways, I wish I didn't know what was going to happen.

Dollius01 · 16/05/2016 16:38

Yes, agreed, I was expecting the books to be rather more, erm, low brow than they are. They are surprisingly well written, the made-up words aside, and the plot is very intricate and well thought-out. I became very tearful at a bit in book 2 which I suspect will be in the next episode. Am now most of the way through book 2 and have book 3 on my kindle ready to go .... Seriously have not been so obsessed with a story for yonks.

MistressFraser · 16/05/2016 16:57

I know! It's like some kind of romantic crack I can't stop smoking. I had to force myself to return the book and not rack up library fines to feed my addiction. Fortunately I have another few days worth of Prime subscription.

I can't completely work it out but it's like she has taken every trope of romantic fiction and made a relationship that feels real, despite it all.

hudyerwheesht · 16/05/2016 17:14

Aww, I thought the Jamie ghost mystery was going to be revealed in book 2 or 3 maybe, damn!

I agree about the books being better written than I'd thought. It's proper romantic escapism. There's nothing more satisfying sometimes than curling up in bed with my book, I find it quite stress-relieving. Plus it's a way of getting my fix in between episodes. Grin

Dollius01 · 16/05/2016 17:49

Thinking of name changing to "JamieFrasersHotJockCock", what do you reckon?

Dollius01 · 16/05/2016 17:49

Maybe "JamieFrasersSporran" would be more dignified?

TheHiphopopotamus · 16/05/2016 18:29

How about JamieFrasersKnees instead?

hudyerwheesht · 16/05/2016 18:33

I say go for it, then we reply to you we can address you as jockcock Grin

Drywhitethanks · 16/05/2016 20:32

Hudyer it would be a spoiler....although I know and not really spoiling the series for me. I'm not sure whether I'll read them properly again....depends if I can manage without Oulptlander when the series is over.

Poor Fergus.

I was thinking......Jamie is a bit nieve to think that Frank would necessarily wait 3 years for Claire, and even if he did does, we know that to assume that he would take her back......was discussing this at breakfast with nonplussed DH and he said "do you think people analyse Bond movies this much?" Hmm

Why are we so addicted to this show? I was a bit the same with GoT in the days when I watched box sets now it's once a week ive calmed down a bit.

Is it because we empathise with Claire Hmm and that Jamie is such a brilliant hero? Or just the sex? Or because I watched season 1 very quickly and got totally bamboozled?

Drywhitethanks · 16/05/2016 20:40

And another thought........BJR has obv a nasty injury, and Frank can't have children.....a parallel there isn't it?

OP posts:
hudyerwheesht · 16/05/2016 20:56

drywhite you mean even finding out when I'll find out would also be a spoiler? I can't wait till the day all this makes sense!

do you think people analyse Bond movies this much? Grin

I too gorged on the first series, I got through 3 hours' worth one evening whilst my DH wasn't home so had the DC to look after, I still don't know how. Although the fact that DH wasn't home and one of those was the wedding episode may have had something to do with it.

My theory is that DG has written the perfect male fantasy character for a female reader: Chivalrous, brave, loyal, strong, romantic, moral - all in one character, what woman could not fall in love? Then SH's fabulous acting brings it to life and betters it, frankly - in a kilt!

Which brings us back to the knees, possibly the crux of our obsession.
