I know what you mean AKA - I take comfort in the fact that however disappointing/confusing/whatever the latest episode is I can come on here and obsess and overthink things to my heart's content. Smile

hudyerwheesht · 09/05/2016 14:15

Yeah the sex scene after the forgiveness was the one I was talking about earlier that made me Hmm

snozzlemaid · 09/05/2016 15:56

Yes, yes, yes to everything you have all said.
The show is much better in places. I didn't like Jamie at all in the book during the spanking episode. He was far too violent.
It makes me glad to have seen the tv show first. Whereas normally I feel quite strongly about reading the books first.
Let's hope they don't stick rigidly to the books then if J & C become unlikeable. I don't want to hate them.

AKAmyself · 09/05/2016 16:01

I also dont want them to ever be 60 because while in theory older people having sex is empowering and natural and life affirming etc etc in practice I want Sam and Caitriona to remain beautiful, toned and full of stamina foreveeeeeeeer

Dollius01 · 09/05/2016 16:12

This worked so much better when they were just all in love with each other. All this intrigue and them falling out all over the place is just ruining it for me.

And, yes, in the book, Jamie maintains to the bitter end that he was right to spank her, even if he agrees not to do it again. V dodgy.

TheHiphopopotamus · 09/05/2016 16:22

I hope they veer away from the book too and go down a completely different route. I'm dying to discuss it but don't want to give any spoilers away! 🙊 (It's the later books, so I'm going to have to wait for another few series).

Dollius01 · 09/05/2016 17:51

Can't we just put a spoiler alert on?

Drywhitethanks · 09/05/2016 20:25

No, let's not have spoilers -although I kind of know what's going to happen, having read book2 listening to you all I think I'll leave the books for now. I love C and J, would be sad to hate them.

I agree with the list Aka and THOSE OVER THE KNEE BOOTS combined with pony tail....HEAVEN! Grin

I agree about this thread, I look forward to catching up every day.

Totally infected too........Grin

Think next week is going to be a good one.

My fav bit from Season one was when Jamie said "I love you so much I can hardly breathe" and in the Wedding episode when he said seeing her as he came out of the church was like seeing "the sun come out on a cloudy day." Fantastic writing.

I thought he was lovely when Claire was worried about being a good mother. Quite a sweet scene, shame it ended so badly.

I wish she could tell him she loved him a bit more.

Does anyone know whether a third season is in the offing? I'm worried how they'll be able to keep it interesting, there are only so many adventures those 2 can have, and I guess being happy with the quiet life wouldn't a make good TV.

so if I'm not going to read the books......may have to watch all5 episodes again for the 100th time!

Drywhite I loved that bit in S1 too when he describes seeing her in her wedding dress, was disappointed to find it missing in the book. In fact a lot of that episode seemed to describe a much more already-infatuated Jamie - getting the ring made, insisting on her having a proper dress, etc. I know they changed that for tv for practicality as it would have been a long scene of them talking but it added so much and it made J much nicer. Imo, anyway. Smile

It's interesting that nobody has mentioned the return of BJR! Is it because it was a bit uneventful? I felt it a bit of an anti climax, personally. I was genuinely surprised; for some reason I thought we wouldn't see him until they go back to Scotland, and I was thinking the whole time, "Oooooh where's Jamie, wait till he sees who's here, oh aye, it's all going to kick off now!"

And then it sort of didn't.

I enjoyed King Louie humiliating him but.....I dunno, something was lacking.

Drywhitethanks · 09/05/2016 22:42

Hudyer actually I thought it was very good, because it was frustrating.....subtle writing. Claire looked as if she was going to pass out, then you see J coming up from behind, BJR holds his sword, he's nervous, Jamie not being able to face him, only when C gets hold of him, his moth twitches ever so slightly, he's trying to contain himself.
When J goes back to BJR we really didn't know what was going to happen, felt how C looked, BJR putting his hand in J's chest, the bows. I thought it showed super human restraint on Jamie's part.....not sure how long he'll manage to hold it in.
Have seen a thing on Twitter about the triangle ...BJR, C and J........think it will all eventually kick off.

I think King Louis is a bit creepy.

I'm actually feeling a bit nervous about next week. GoT and Outlander are rendering me a nervous wreck...........

I haven't read DIA in years, but I'm sure that BJR has turned up in the series a lot earlier than he does in the book. I can only presume that things are going to move pretty quickly. DG has written episode 10, so I expect that episode to introduce us to two important characters. It would also mean that part of Voyager may be dealt with in this series. The latter books would, I believe be very difficult to film, so it will be interesting to see if they continue past a third or fourth series.

TheHiphopopotamus · 10/05/2016 07:59

No, I won't spoil anything but I read an interview with Ron Moore and it looks like they're already planning S3 although it hasn't been confirmed by Starz yet. And it also looks like they're going to follow the books. Boo! Angry

hudyerwheesht · 10/05/2016 11:43

Yeah maybe that was it, drywhite - I was frustrated/impatient. But in retrospect it was a more subtle, restrained way of playing it and it would have been too much too soon to have it all out with each other in one go.

I was annoyed at not hearing the conversation, even if we found out the content afterwards - I'm clearly just too impatient. Grin

SH was superb, as ever, as was TM - much as I hate the character he is an awesome actor.

Lessstressedhemum · 10/05/2016 17:58

The thing with the spanking is, though, that it would have been a perfectly normal thing to happen in 18th century Scotland. She did something that endangered everyone, so she had to be punished for it and a strapping would have been the accepted norm. Remember that it's only about 30 years since schools stopped using a tawse to punish pupils. That was a perfectly normal and acceptable punishment for those of us who grew up with it. We knew that that would be the consequence of misbehaviour.
Also, Claire, and later Brianna, would have been Jamie's property to do with as he saw fit. It would have been his duty to protect them but he would have effectively owned them. Under those circumstances, I think he pays a lot more attention to consent than many men of that time and culture would have done in actuality. IMO, we have to be careful not to apply our modern sensibilities to historical stuff, whether fact or fiction.
I like Jamie in the later books. He has an enormous weight of responsibility on him, which he shoulders unstintingly. And he clearly is still madly in love unconditionally, with Claire. He seems just to take everythi g in his stride. She on the other hand, rips my knitting.

hudyerwheesht · 10/05/2016 19:46

I know what you mean, lessstressed, especially about not applying modern day standards to it. I've tried to keep reminding myself both when watching the series and when reading the book. I think for me though, it was the fact that he enjoyed it so much that bothered me and it seemed unnecessary for the plot.

And in both book and tv they really drive home the point that he enjoyed it and that didn't sit right with me no matter how hard I tried.

Drywhitethanks · 10/05/2016 20:48

oh that's great news TheHipHop thanks

Loved the episode esp from where BJR came in onwards. Drywhite I agree with you - so subtlety handled. Great contrast between his pleasure at the thought of revenge and his fury and despair in the last scene.

Who thinks the spoons must have some huge part to play later on - like maybe Jamie scoops BJR's eyeballs out with them or something? Otherwise cannot see the point of them at all. what a crap present.

I LOVE Jamie in the later books - if anything even more than bk 1. love the books generally but definitely loads of stuff is better in the series. Enjoyed BJR riffing on the outrageous coincidence of them all meeting up at Versailles - the books certainly don't shy away from an unlikely coincidence as a plot device ...!

TheHiphopopotamus · 10/05/2016 22:18

I think it's hard not to apply modern standards to it, though. If it was just a story about an 18th Century couple, that's fair enough, but we're seeing Jamie through a modern(ish) woman's eyes. I thought the TV series handled the spanking incident a lot better as pp's have said.

As for the consent issue, there's an incident in the later books that put me right off Jamie (I won't say what as it's a massive spoiler). And yes, I'm judging him by 21st century standards in that regard, it's hard not to. And I lay the blame squarely at Diana Gabaldon's feet. Reading some of the plot lines, it's hard to understand where she's coming from. Some of it is like the worst kind of fan fic, where she lets all her unspeakable fantasies run wild. And you begin to wonder if she actually likes these people that she writes about, because they have some awful stuff done them to them.

Jane054848 · 10/05/2016 22:43

Hiphop, really trying to work out what you mean ... Do you mean in bk 3 re GD? (hope that's unspoilery enough).

TheHiphopopotamus · 10/05/2016 22:50

jane I'll look it up tomorrow and dm you the bit I mean Grin Not trying to start an argument by the way, I love hearing everyone's different opinions on it all and this is a fantastic discussion thread.

For the record, I absolutely adore SH's portrayal of Jamie (don't we all? Grin) and I love the TV adaption.

SenecaFalls · 10/05/2016 22:57

I agree. The TV show has a feminist vibe and the books, in my opinion, much less so. I like that in the TV show, Jamie is much more willing to listen to Claire and learn from her so he acquires a more modern sense of things than in the books.

pixieg1rl · 10/05/2016 23:19

I think it's worth remembering that its pushing 25 years since the first books were published. I think (allowing for taste) the idea of the qualities that made a romantic hero then as opposed to now is also very different. Anyone brought up on an 80's diet of Jilly Cooper and Jackie Collins might find Jamie of the first book perfectly acceptable.

Lessstressedhemum · 11/05/2016 10:02

Pixie, yes, I agree. That's probably my era, although I didn't read romantic fiction at all then. More Stephen king and dean kuntz. I also come from an generation which had its bum skelped regularly when we were disobedient.

Do you mean the scene in Blood and Ashes, Hippo, that one's quite uncomfortable, but I didn't read it as a lack of consent. I think they were both very unsure about it. I think, as well, Claire isn't quite a modern woman, attitudes to women and to corporal punishment in the 1940/50s were still very different to those we might have. I don't know, I just know that I like Jamie a lot, even though he is without doubt a man of his time, and Claire, as I said, burns my biscuits.
