Is that Gaelic?

OP posts:
Lessstressedhemum · 17/04/2016 22:48

No, it's Scottish slang for armpit.

Fiderer · 18/04/2016 07:36

"Honeypot" ? Thank fuck my children are now too old for me to read them Winnie The Pooh.

Icecappedpinetrees · 18/04/2016 07:44

Grin oxter... It's funny to think that folk out there don't have this in their vocab, I forget that not everyone is Scottish! I have a friend from Kent and she struggles to understand me sometimes and I've a pretty mind accent!

Drywhitethanks · 18/04/2016 08:11

Icecap I've often wonder how the U.S. audience manages with the Scottish accents in Outlander.

Can't tell you how many times I've "studied" episode 2 Blush but It definitely improves with viewing.

watched a bit of Poldark after for old times sake

Oxter! Haven't heard that in ages! Grin This is what I'm missing about S1, so much funny slang thrown about that I haven't heard in so long, made me chuckle in every episode.

Loved the episode, although thanks to this thread I spent the whole thing obsessively scrutinising Sam's forehead.

Was it odd that I quite fancied King Louis? Not in the shitting scene, obviously. But afterwards.

hudyerwheesht · 18/04/2016 11:27

Ah, I've found myself staring at the forehead too. Quite off-putting.

I just remembered the brothel scene - who knew they even had dildos in 18th century, nevermind passing them out in brothels?? Well I didn't anyway, wasn't exactly something that was covered in GCSE History.

Makes me wonder how/where DG did her research - Wikipedia/Google wasn't around in the early 90's...

pixieg1rl · 18/04/2016 11:42

I think they've had dildos for quite a lot longer than that. Blush

hudyerwheesht · 18/04/2016 12:48

Must have - can't say I've ever given it much thought.

Definitely not Googling that one whilst at work!

Jane054848 · 18/04/2016 13:04

I think DG is perhaps not overwhelmingly concerned with historical accuracy ...

They definitely had dildoes in Ancient Greece, also pubic grooming. I did learn that in my GCSEs, funnily enough!

Saddo that I am....I've learnt that infact 18c dresses were actually not always worn to the ground, and French women wore theirs a bit shorter too being fashion forward and all.....so I take back what I said about the red dress being too short Smile.......although I still think it would have looked better if it had been longer

Also how tall did CB look next to the tiny French women ?

Ok, those of you who talked me into getting the book - you were so right, I'm hooked!

Like snozzlemaid, I may be quiet for some time.....

Lessstressedhemum · 19/04/2016 13:23

In light of the oxter thing, I called one of my kids a gomeril the other day, something my dad use to say to us all the time, and none of them had a clue what I meant. All the excellent Scots words of S1 remind me of my youth. You don't hear it so much nowadays, unless it's coming out of my mouth, and then 'D'H tells me not to speak like that or the children (who are all teens or adults) won't be able to write proper English!!!!

hudyerwheesht · 19/04/2016 14:00

lessstressed Grin

I know what you mean. My favourite from S1 was a "skelped arse" - the possibility of which I was playfully threatened with often as a naughty child.

My username probably comes from dealing with DC and their non-stop chattering (and DH when he's annoying me!) and I also get met with faces like this: Confused

OohMavis · 19/04/2016 14:04

We had gomeril and skelped arse as kids and we're English! Well, a few generations away from Scottish relations on my dad's side, but still, I had no idea these were Scottish words. Fascinating.
