I'm not familiar with the story, but the trailers for it look awesome.

I can't see anything with both Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston in, as well as Olivia Colman being bad, can you?

Watching now.

The Devon thing is because that's house's Roper's patch from way before so he'd get to hear of him. The motorbike was shit agreed. Olivia Coleman's characters office etc...in a previous life I worked alongside the oxymorons military intelligence. The higher up the less fancy the office. Hangover from cold war days when it was initially meant to deceive the other side that someone was less important than they were, of course it didn't work for long but the military tend to be resistant to change in terms of hierarchy and appearances.

Watching now, thoroughly enjoying but with only 4(?) More episodes it needs to heat up a little.

Yes recognised Jed but wasn't sure what from, hair colour change threw me.

Baconyum · 06/03/2016 21:22

Oh and I think the motivation is not totally altruistic, pine feels guilty he got Sophie killed sure, but he also missed the action and likes being a hero, even if others don't know, iirc in first episode it was said he's not just an ex soldier but ex special forces. They rarely cope well with settling down.

whyistherumgone · 06/03/2016 21:22

surely asking the boy questions isn't particularly safe? he could easily tell his dad pine was asking about his secret study...

Baconyum · 06/03/2016 21:23

Sorry should really make sure I write all in one post! Le carré knows his stuff and is well respected in the intelligence community, and no that's not his real or working name.

Baconyum · 06/03/2016 21:25

But he knows Danny likes him and is aware of how his father's world works well enough to not drop pine in it. Pine's previous experience will have honed his ability to risk assess such a choice.

Lurleene · 06/03/2016 21:28

Hugh Laurie obviously looked to Swiss Tony for inspiration when deciding how to play Roper.

whyistherumgone · 06/03/2016 21:34

True bacon hadn't thought of it like that

mercifulTehlu · 06/03/2016 22:06

Argh! I couldn't stand the bit when he was snooping! I was expecting him to get caught any moment! Yy to loving the beach running scenes and swimming scenes Grin.

PersisFord · 06/03/2016 22:13

I am fast losing patience with this - it's all v pretty but nothing is happening!!!! And I find it a bit unlikely that Pine would be allowed to take the little boy (who is adorable) off for the day, bodyguard or no bodyguard. And he is a bit forces and weird with him too.

But OMG I want the house and the clothes!!!!

shakeatailfeather · 06/03/2016 22:18

Same here mercifu but the whole episode I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. This is quite unusual for me, I am one of those people who is normally watching, while crocheting or being on here, checking emails etc, but this programme (and one other) has my full attention (not just because of Tom Hiddleston! partly him though)

Namechanger2015 · 06/03/2016 22:23

Loved this and am checking in ready for next week. How can it be the penultimate episode next week already?

Hugh Laurie is a fantastic actor, totally believable as Roper. I've never really noticed him as a good actor before. Tom Hollander is yum!

CaveMum · 06/03/2016 22:25

Persis that's the way with Le Carre books, it's all a slow burner. Tinker Tailor (film version) didn't do that well in the box office as people expect blockbusters full of pace and action. From what I've read, those that work in the intelligence services say Le Carre's novels are the most realistic depictions of what it's actually like.

CaveMum · 06/03/2016 22:26

I thought it was a 6-part series? Tonight was only episode 3.

Agree HL is a fab straight actor, but I'm not surprised at how good he is in this role as he was brilliant as House.

UnGoogleable · 06/03/2016 22:32

Ooh loved it, lots of tension!

I missed the first 5 minutes though, can anyone fill me in on why the girl hung herself at the beginning?

So we think Olivia Coleman's character is some sort of foreign office enforcement role, rather than MI6 then? Judging by the conversation with the folks from CIA / MI6 wanting to take the case off the foreign office bod. I liked how he stuck to his guns though.

Is it wrong that I felt a bit sorry for Corkeran (Tom Hol), as he's been sidelined through no fault of his own. Awww poor little thing.

Travelledtheworld · 06/03/2016 22:44

Corkeran is no doubt planning his very nasty revenge.....l

Namechanger2015 · 06/03/2016 22:45

Oh I thought they said next week was the penultimate episode? I hope not.

I've not watched anything lately that has gripped me in the same way as this. I've also never read anything by John Le Carre and am now tempted to look for a short/easy one to try, if anyone has any suggestions?

Also have to correct myself - Tom Hollander is most definitely not yum, but Hiddleston is. I'm confusing my Toms.

LovePGtipsMonkey · 06/03/2016 23:11

sorry but can anyone spell itout for me regarding the hair found on desk? I was watching (not at home) on TV with no live pause or scrolling, and was distracted that minute.

If it's the GF's hair, does it mean she is spying too, maybe though just to know who she is sleeping with really? I find it ridiculously unrealistic that she's got involved with a VERY rich man and then looks all silently shocked at all the unpleasant scenes yet doesn't leave him - there must be a reason she's tolerating it while crying in bedroom. Otherwise WhyTF not just leave? Roper doesn't think she knows anything so it's not like she's a hostage of his. If she wanted just to fund her child, surely she could haev chosen a middle level well of man anytime - smth very fishy there, and as a result I'm not sympathetic.

LovePGtipsMonkey · 06/03/2016 23:12

'well-off man',, not well of, obv!

LovePGtipsMonkey · 06/03/2016 23:19

I think Hugh Laurie was fantastic in this ep in all the serious bits, BUT there is absolute lack of on-screen chemistry with the GF, so again it's not believable that he would risk anything at all for her, or that he is obsessed with her, and say if Pine is useful to him he'd rather drop her than Pine. At least that's how it comes across, there's a definite distance and coolness between them.

TheSpottedZebra · 06/03/2016 23:25

I don't usually fancy Tom Hollander, but somehow seeing him as a psychopathic gay arms dealer/fixer, that has all changed.

Most odd.

BossWitch · 06/03/2016 23:33

I'm hugely in love with Tom Hiddleston at the moment, but that aside I think this series is brilliant. Proper edge of seat stuff! I am also thinking that Jed may turn out to be a spy, deep cover type stuff which requires her to shaggy nasty Roper-esque men, one of which resulted in her son, which is why her mother calls her a whore. Can't wait for next week!

MissBattleaxe · 06/03/2016 23:40

Wasn't the man in Monaco the man from the foreign office/intelligence meeting in London?

BossWitch · 06/03/2016 23:45

Indeed! Hence the River House wanting to shut down operation limpet. Roper has a man on the inside of Mi6!

LovePGtipsMonkey · 06/03/2016 23:59

Boss, I suspected that Jed may be a spy from early on, when they showed her doing her routine of dressing/taking pills as if it had significance - like doing a work routine. But after this ep, seeing that genuine shock/upset on her face at unpleasant moments (unobserved by Roper), crying in bedroom, I started to doubt that - possibly it's more simple, like funding her drug habit or being pushed into it by someone -blackmailed to do with her child or something?

BossWitch · 07/03/2016 00:08

Hmm good point PGtipsmonkey. Can't wait to find out! Also can't wait to see if Corky resurfaces and does something horrendous (assuming that he will not be in next week's episode, but will have been seen off 'off screen' to leave some mystery and threat). Hope we see more of him, I'm finding him actually quite terrifying. A fact which made seeing him read a cbeebies bedtime story earlier in the week seriously confusing!
