I'm not familiar with the story, but the trailers for it look awesome.

I can't see anything with both Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston in, as well as Olivia Colman being bad, can you?

I agree. Sex on screen is better implied than shown.

OnlyLovers · 16/03/2016 10:35

I thought Tom Hollander was magnificent in the lobster salad scene. He is the stand-out in this show, for my money.

I didn't mind the brevity of the sex scene. I think they were both pretty revved up for it, from the kiss at his villa and the ensuing sexual tension; plus the dangerous thrill of doing it basically under Roper's nose.

I'm sure I could go from 0 to 60 pretty fast in those circumstances. Grin

witsender · 16/03/2016 10:41

I don't think hiddlestone is overly convincing in this tbh. I love him, but not great.

bornwithaplasticspoon · 16/03/2016 10:43

He must have got her to the brink in the lift up to the room

PersisFord · 16/03/2016 10:50

witsender me too. He's pretty, but hasn't really done much acting yet as far as I can see. maybe he is yet to come into his own. He was a very convincing hotel manager I thought.

witsender · 16/03/2016 11:08

I agree. Not enough undercurrent of 'grit' to be the character Roper seems to think he is.

TheSpottedZebra · 16/03/2016 11:22

Agree that Tom Hollander was excellent in the lobster scene.
On which note the chap who Pine apologises too re lobster kerfuffle is Le Carre. He always pops up somewhere in a cameo.

NeverEverAnythingEver · 16/03/2016 13:15

Is that Le Carre? How thrilling!

NeverEverAnythingEver · 16/03/2016 13:16

(That sounds a bit sarcastic but is not meant to be! I'm really pleased to know that!)

squoosh · 16/03/2016 13:17

Oooh I didn't know that either! He played Posh Affronted Bloke really well Grin

mercifulTehlu · 16/03/2016 14:27

I agree with OnlyLovers about the sex scene. They've been simmering for some time and the danger and sneakiness ups the excitement levels. A quickie definitely fits the bill! Besides, this is Hiddles... just looking at him in that suit is surely equal to copious foreplay Grin.

bornwithaplasticspoon · 16/03/2016 14:34

One wonders if Roper enjoyed his sloppy seconds

OnlyLovers · 16/03/2016 15:23

just looking at him in that suit is surely equal to copious foreplay

Well, quite.

OnlyLovers · 16/03/2016 15:23

Oh, bold failure. Confused

NotCitrus · 16/03/2016 16:22

The sex standing on one leg didn't look like much fun!
Though I think Corky is keeping quiet about Jed+Pine because he knows Jed probably wouldn't live very long afterwards if Roper found out.

I never really saw why people found Hiddleston attractive, until my friend showed me him teaching Cookie Monster about delayed gratification... he looks a lot better when he's more relaxed!

I predict Jed won't live to the end of the last episode, nor Corky. And Burr and Joel will probably get it on during the nail-biting climax.

Mayhew's evil boss is scarily realistic!

NeverEverAnythingEver · 16/03/2016 16:56

They can do away with anybody, just not Burr. Don't think I can bear that.

cherrytree63 · 16/03/2016 17:02

Pp mentioned the boy flying home to his mum, I assumed he was going in Roper's private jet with his own on board security?

Lurleene · 16/03/2016 17:08

Slightly off-topic but did anyone catch the documentary 'David Harewood's F-Word' which was on Sky Arts recently? It's still available on catch-up I'm sure.

David (i.e Joel in The Night Manager), talks to other well known actors including Olivia Colman , Lennie James and Damian Lewis about 'Failure' in the acting business.

David said that when he got his part in Homeland he was skint and couldn't pay the mortgage, which surprised me. Olivia Colman basically said she takes on far too much as she feels guilty turning down paid work. It was really interesting to see them talking about a side of acting you don't really hear much about.

Gruach · 16/03/2016 17:47

Ah - whenever I catch a glimpse of Sky Arts in other people's houses I do experience a slight pang of TV longing.

That sounds rather good Lurleene - and also surprising as he has a definite film star face.

I can't find the energy to comment on T.H. - he's absolutely the least interesting thing in the show.

MsBojangles · 16/03/2016 19:18

I like OC but I found the sports day scene cringey. Am I the only cynical cow here?!

Nope, there are two of us Wink

PersisFord · 16/03/2016 20:12

Three!

MafaldaHopkirk · 16/03/2016 20:14

merciful "just looking at him in that suit is surely equal to copious foreplay" - hell yes! Grin

Does anyone know if there is sex in the book or has it been added for TV as a very welcome excuse to see lots of naked THidd

I'm loving THoll and OC but not as much as THidd

My theory is that Pine/Birch is going to double cross Roper and steal the $300m dollars in his bank account and then run off with Jed.

Davros · 16/03/2016 20:51

So I am sharing the cynical cow crown Grin

2rebecca · 16/03/2016 21:00

I don't find TH interesting or sexy either. I'd stick with Laurie if I was Jed

mercifulTehlu · 17/03/2016 08:20

Stay with Roper?! Ah yes, the man with the combined attractions of being old enough to be her father (probably), being the worst man in the world, seeing you and others as dispensible commodities and having a face like a well-loved armchair Grin. Nope - I don't think I'd be going for that, much as I like Hugh Laurie.
