Excellent news about DH 's job jen. Hope the trials went well for them richtea

Re when to start school. It's an interesting one, particularly when you look at other countries. In the UK we have been very against taking children out of their chronological year group but in Oz it is commonplace especially for boys (see Steve Biddulph's book), in Germany if, at any point, you fail the year you have to re do it. Our model never allows you to repeat the year (possibly for illness) so if you want to keep them back you have to do it from the beginning.
There is quite a lot of research on summer born children remaining behind for the whole of their school career - 12 months is a 1/5 of their life age 5 so can be a significant difference. I think you have to look at the needs of each child. We have a friend who paid for private school from age 11 so their son could be in "the year below". He has thrived and had an interview at the Brit School last week for their technical theatre course. It was the right decision for him

Also compulsory schooling in England doesn't start till yr 1 so you could keep them in nursery for another year if you felt that was more beneficial than foundation 2 and then go straight into year 1 or start foundation 2? At this age children's ability ranges hugely anyway. I think some LEAs are now asking parents of summerborn children when they want them to start.
Something else I learnt recently (slightly related) is that boys fine motor skills develop slower than girls which could be why they generally find writing/colouring in more difficult to begin with. In Sweden they don't pick up pencils till 7 but on various measures exceed English pupils (obviously to do with more than this).
The current research says the factor that has the biggest impact on exam success/jobs/income is literacy so the best thing we can do is read to our children, be seen reading and encourage them to read (anything - cereal boxes is reading). For infant school them reading 4 times a week, not sure what recommendation is for juniors, secondary is 20 mins everyday - the stats on this are remarkable. The key is that it needs to be reading for pleasure. Yes at the beginning some will resent it but a friend who got her teenagers to do it said first they grumbled, then they were asking to finish the page, then the chapter. Sorry I'm quite passionate about this at the moment.

Anyway, do what you feel is right for your children, follow your instinct. I don't think there is a "right" answer

Great news jen

icemistOBE · 20/02/2016 18:15

What a busy week!

Jen So glad hubby not in the redundant list. Must be a huge relief. Will he look fir something else anyway?

Am currently looking at hotel for me and 6yo when we visit London in summer. By staying on a Sunday night saves me £40+ ridiculous really.

Thanks all - yes he's most definitely job hunting!! Has definitely reinforced the fact that he doesn't want to do the job anymore.

kel try not to stress about the age thing and just base it on the boys themselves. There's no one correct rule in my experience. My eldest started school at 4, is still the youngest in his class 5 years later, but went up with his nursery friends and was absolutely fine. There are many kids in his class who are a year older than him because their parents did the opposite and held them back for a year - they're also perfectly happy! Just go with what you think based on how the boys are, and don't beat yourself up about whatever decision you make.

Footie tournament for eldest today - his team won, so have been scraping him off the ceiling since we got back Smile

Ilovelblue · 21/02/2016 08:37

Morning all. Just putting my stuff together for our spa weekend. Howling wind here so just the sort of weather to be hiding away in a hotel. If there are any CJ lookslikes or worse, Turkish men in sarongs, I'll be sure to let you know.

Ilovelblue · 21/02/2016 08:39

Rhubarb and Bananagirl sorry I've not reviewed your stories yet. Will do it today. Loving them!

MaddieMoo82 · 21/02/2016 08:43

I agree they are both fabulous stories and rhub what a treat with two chapters! Enjoy your spa weekend ilove!

Rhubarb01 · 21/02/2016 10:13

Morning! Hope you're all well. Good news about Mr Jen's job and lovely to hear your DS had such a great day as well. It's lovely when they do well at something and are so happy like that. It really gives you a little lift as well!

I was taxiing yesterday for eldest DD who is very sporty and manages to talk me into entering her for competitions all over the country. I'm not sure she realises how nervous I get for her sometimes - or how nervous I get trying to get her to strange places on time! She's on her second competitive sport now so after years of getting my head round all the technicalities of one sport I've had to teach myself all about another - or that is learn what not to say to wind her up! Most nights before we go somewhere I just pray that she'll be satisfied by however it turns out because she's very hard on herself when it doesn't go well. I think I should retrain in Sports Psychology because you don't realise when you become a mum that it's on the list of skills required. Naturally, I have a talent for saying exactly the wrong thing. "Just forget about it and stop worrying" doesn't usually go down well as does "It doesn't matter!". Its rich who has the sporty DS isn't it? I bet you've had a few of these moments too!

Thank you for the kind reviews and comments on the story ladies. I don't know what I'd do without the support of the lovely OG ladies. It's been a bit of a struggle. Hopefully it will be concluded this week.

It's windy and wet here and looks like I'm going to the supermarket - whoopee I know how to live it up! Have a good day one and all!

pixieg1rl · 21/02/2016 14:00

Another quiet day on here, I hope it isn't because ilove is trapped underneath a sweaty Turkish man (or if she is it was her choice Wink)

Standard back to school tomorrow and Sunday afternoon here, walk, drink in the village pub, laundry mountain, washing up etc.

Caught up on Shetland last night nickel, it's getting really interesting now!

moojangles · 21/02/2016 14:20

Loving Shetland at the mo. Have an equally enthralling afternoon ahead of housework and work. Readjusting to DH being home!

Nickel45 · 21/02/2016 15:41

Shetland is good at the moment, isn't it. And isnt it the director from Shetland, that is directing some of the new episodes of OG2?

mooj hope MrMooj has given you a good birthday weekend (or have I lost a week, and that was last weekend, half term has completely thrown me at the moment!)

Ilovelblue · 21/02/2016 17:26

Our spa treatments are tomorrow pixie so I'm on here and my friend is supposed to be reading but I think she's actually nodding off. Any news on Turkish men in sarongs will have to wait till Monday! Normal food tonight. The detox green sludge lunch is tomorrow so I need to have a full English breakfast to compensate.

pixieg1rl · 21/02/2016 18:53

I think you might to wash that full English down with a pint of Guinness ilove, to keep your iron levels up

pixieg1rl · 21/02/2016 21:42

Ok, watching the night manager and Tom Hiddleston is doing nothing for me.

MaddieMoo82 · 21/02/2016 21:52

Evening all. Busy old weekend. Not with anything exciting just the usual Food shopping, laundry, family visiting, trying to tidy but failing miserably etc. Haven't got half the stuff done I wanted and feel so drained and tired. Probs just the thought of work but feel a bit pants.

ilove enjoy your day tomorrow, maybe sneak a couple of sausages in your pocket from breakfast. They'll sort you out during your detox lunch Smile

Is anyone watching the night manager... Is it good?? I'm recording it.

Ilovelblue · 21/02/2016 23:33

Maddie orphan and woof are the experts when it comes to sneaking sausages around but I'll do my best!

orphan should be back home by today shouldn't she? I wonder how many salamis she's nibbled on?

Ilovelblue · 21/02/2016 23:43

Eeek. Just remembered to alter my alarm ringtone for tomorrow. Not sure my friend will relish the 'have some human decency and put some bloody effort in' routine at 7am!

Richtea19 · 22/02/2016 07:24

Hope you're having a good time ilove and enjoy the treatments.

I watched the night manager and enjoyed it, DH was watching with me and he liked "current affairs" input in it! pix i know what you mean re. TH. Not really CJ, especially when he said he was in the army. He's handsome but a bit thin and clean cut? Nevertheless still going watch, 6 parts so I'm guessing it will get more detailed.

I've got toothache this morning, well had most of the weekend. Not sure if it's my tooth or me grinding. I am the classic teeth grinder at night, sometimes I wake in the morning and I can't even open my
Mouth! DH loves it's!!!!!

Hope everyone's littlies get back to school ok this morning.

Ilovelblue · 22/02/2016 08:13

Richtea I had a spell of grinding my teeth in the night and the (private) dentist made me a mouth shield which I've never been able to use as it makes me gag every time!

About to go for breakfast.

Good luck to those returning to school today.

apsara03 · 22/02/2016 09:26

I sleep with a "deprogrammer" as I grind my teeth at night. It did take a while to get use to. The dentist did cut some off the back so it's not on my very back teeth. It did stop me waking up with a headache every morning

I have no clue if this has been posted in the previous thread (I had a quick search but haven't got the time to RTFTs Grin), but, has anyone been watching Sky 1's Lucky Man? I'm watching a bit late on catch up & am just on ep 1, but lo & behold, Capt James is in it. He's only been in a couple of brief times so far (30 mins in) so no idea if he's a permanent fixture, but thought it was worth a mention in case anyone wasn't aware!
