This Sunday (17th) at 8pm on BBC1.

I enjoyed the Christmas special - it was good to see Delia back, and I think there's going to be a nice romance with Tom and Barbara Smile

The - it looks like we are going to get a thalidomide story.

Dd reckons if anything happens between Tom and Barbara that Trixie will fall off the wagon, now they've signposted it by mentioning her AA meetings again.

I'm hoping Trixie will be so upset she leaves.

I thought I didn't like Jenny, but my dislike of Trixie is at a whole different level. I may stop watching.

I think the doctor or someone will get lun cancer or problems caused by smoking. The hints are constantly there.

The hints have been there since series 1

God I love CTM!!!

Think the storyline was probably fairly realistic, the thalidomide scandal was and is still so shocking. I don't think the families were ever properly compensated were they?

Yes not sure about Tom and Barbara is he planning on working his way round all the midwives Hmm

It could go either way for Tom, back to trixie or a new love with Barbara. Nothing quite like a love triangle for drama.
I think they handled the thalidomide story very well, I read that a thalidomide survivor helped them with the storyline and was even on set.

The show is going to have to go on for a while longer before someone gets lung cancer though, won't it.
I can't imagine being bossed back home to a different country at 24. Such a lack of independence for women.

misstiredbuthappy · 17/01/2016 21:10

Would the two women (can't remember for the life off me their names) get in trouble if everyone knew there are in a relationship or would it just be frowend upon ?

SuffolkNWhat · 17/01/2016 21:12

It'd be hushed up, if lucky they might be able to live together as maiden aunts etc

Ahhh!! Missed it. Just saw this thread now. I'm gutted. Will it be on YouTube do you think? Or Iplayer?

Report
rivierliedje · 17/01/2016 21:15

Well it wasn't illegal (like it was for men), but it would be a perfectly suitable excuse to fire someone and make them a pariah in the community.

Report
kinkytoes · 17/01/2016 21:17

Well the nuns would be less than impressed for a start I'm sure!

Report
misstiredbuthappy · 17/01/2016 21:21

Why was it illegal for men and not women ?

Report
AnneEyhtMeyer · 17/01/2016 21:22

In real life I expect they would live as unmarried friends.

If it had been discovered the nuns would have been horrified I imagine.

In CTM I expect they will be philosophical and understanding and embrace their love.

Because the Victorians couldn't figure out how women have sex

Queen Victoria didnt believe that something so abhorrent really existed. Wink

Report
rivierliedje · 17/01/2016 21:27

Because men made the laws and couldn't fathom women doing anything like that? I don't really know, but I imagine that played a part. Also, wasn't the law based on sodomy being a sin (the bible etc) and only men can commit sodomy? Something like that?

Ooh why all the hate for Trixie? I didn't watch Strictly, is she that bad a dancer?

She had a point that the nuns get the whole weekend off for praying, why shouldn't the midwives have hobbies? I like her, she's gutsy.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 17/01/2016 21:39

Her dancing was fine, but she was a cow.

"It's awful to think a generation were affected by that awful drug."

My generation. I went to Brownies with a girl who was a thalidomide victim. One of her legs was shorter than the other and her hands weren't fully formed. I think her arms were a little shorter as well.

Caught up on Iplayer. So sad. Very well portrayed though.
I never watched strictly, I like Trixie. I love the way the series is progressing
