This Sunday (17th) at 8pm on BBC1.

I enjoyed the Christmas special - it was good to see Delia back, and I think there's going to be a nice romance with Tom and Barbara Smile

The - it looks like we are going to get a thalidomide story.

Is it believable that "Doctor's" wife works?
The wife of our GP in the 60s worked as his receptionist. As doctors often married nurses I think this was probably a fairly common arrangement. They would be available 24/7 for one thing.

diddl · 11/02/2016 10:26

I was just thinking of women being expected to give up work upon marriage in some careers.

So maybe she couldn't have carried on if she worked in a hospital?

And who looks after Angela???

BertieBotts · 11/02/2016 10:45

She did give up work but she didn't like it, she wanted to go back to work and he agreed so it worked.

There were childminders and nurseries, working class women have always worked. I don't think most parents today would use a 1960s childminder or nursery as they were completely unregulated but there must have been some nice ones. They are quite privileged so perhaps they had the choice.

diddl · 11/02/2016 10:53

Oh yes I know that some women have always worked & of course initially she helped at his surgery, didn't she?

That I can see happening more than being a full time nurse in a hospital working shifts, for example!

I'm just thinking that if it impacted on him at all then it wouldn't be happening.

MarthasHarbour · 11/02/2016 12:03

Angela was crawling around the surgery floor in the last episode!

I also love Timmy Turner, he is the true stereotype of someone who becomes a Dr, the teenager who reads his Dr parent's Lancet and talks about diagnoses over the breakfast table Smile

BertieBotts · 11/02/2016 12:56

Yes she was but it was after hours, wasn't it?

MarthasHarbour · 11/02/2016 13:54

Ah yes maybe it was.

I think they will play with the storyline first, having a near miss, being relieved, and then actually being found out. It's not going end well, surely? I know lesbian relationships weren't illegal but they weren't acceptable either?

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 12/02/2016 18:53

Patsy mentioned in the episode where that man was set up in the toilet (despised the bloody policeman since then) that when she trained as a nurse they were told they had to conduct themselves a certain way.

Girlfriend36 · 12/02/2016 21:59

I'm hoping it won't be another traumatic ending for patsy and delia! Am sure lots of lesbian woman did live together as 'companions' for many years without too much fuss being made.......

BertieBotts · 12/02/2016 22:03

It might be that they let them live together as "friends" but then there are just a couple of poignant scenes where they can't act as a couple when they would obviously like to.

morningtoncrescent62 · 12/02/2016 22:36

Does anyone else think Patsy in CTM is very like an earlier Patsy - Joanna Lumley in AbFab? Every time I hear her addressed as Patsy I get a flashback. She looks more like her than ever in this series.

I think one of the younger nuns will discover Patsy and Delia together in a compromising position. She (the nun) will pray, wrestle with her conscience etc., knowing that if she reported them that would be the end of their careers. Sister Julienne will utter wise words about not judging but will look very pained. Sister Monica Joan will turn out to have known all along and be completely unfazed by it. Sister Evangelina will return just in time to make it clear that Patsy and Delia's love for each other is no-one else's business so long as they get on with their jobs, and we'll get a flashback that makes us wonder whether she had a fling with another woman in the dim and distant past, before joining the order. There will be lots of tears and it'll be resolved through some crisis, possibly thalidomide-complications-related.

MrsJamin · 13/02/2016 06:09

Ooh morningtoncrescent62 I'd like to see that episode!

MarthasHarbour · 13/02/2016 09:01

mornington YY that's it!! Grin

gymboywalton · 14/02/2016 11:44

oh my gosh- my super roantic husband has shown how well he knows me and has bought me dr turner's casebook for my valentines p[resent!

so...apparently before jennifer worthington died they had conversations with her about storylines, got her to approve stuff etc and asked her what bits were totally true and what were fiction. dr turner and sister bernadette were FICTIONAL! Shock

so as they were fictional, they could do what they liked with them! that is the reason the parts have been expanded so much!

seasidesally · 14/02/2016 15:25

great my son has just downloaded the first 2 series for free, great as i was gonna go out and buy them

I hope that wanker Sister Wendy/Gewn/Gwendoline doesn't discover Pasty and Delia. Judgemental cow.

Hated it when she asked that poor prostitute who'd just fought syphilis, traumatic birth and lost someone she cared about if her week old baby was going to 'join the family business'. Nasty piece of work.

Love Patsy and Delia. I have a Sims couple modelled on them.
