This Sunday (17th) at 8pm on BBC1.

I enjoyed the Christmas special - it was good to see Delia back, and I think there's going to be a nice romance with Tom and Barbara Smile

The - it looks like we are going to get a thalidomide story.

My MIL was teaching at a very well known private school in London in 1969 and had to leave as soon as it showed she was expecting DH. It was barely tolerated that she was married, and wasn't allowed to wear her wedding ring.

SuburbanCrofter · 02/02/2016 13:43

My Mum was expected to leave her job when she was pregnant with me (she was married). She didn't tell anyone in the first trimester, but some cheeky mare saw the midwife visiting the house for a pre-natal checkup, and went to Mum's workplace saying 'I hear Mrs SuburbansMum is leaving soon, can I apply for her job?'!!

Just caught up. I have to say, that was an education on typhoid, I didn't know any of it. Explains the expression "Typhoid Mary" as a euphemism for a sick/contagious person. I had no idea that people were carriers for life and had to be on a register.

I thought the interracial relationship was nicely done without an emphasis on the abuse the couple might have faced. I'm not sure whether older members of a family would have been so liberal and tolerant, but maybe I'm underestimating.

Akire · 02/02/2016 16:47

Amazingly really only on 80-90s woman started to have it all as they put it. Guess why growing up
In 80s a lot of older teachers were Miss because you either stayed or got married but not both.

I remember seeing nurses on bike when a child and being told they were midwifes. So 60s bikes lasted awhile!

Clawdy, I remember her as a very old lady. I used to visit her with my grandma occasionally. She was very deaf and had a hearing aid. You always got tea and cake on a China tea set and the front room was very old fashioned with over stuffed chairs and anti micassars (sp?)

LillianGish · 04/02/2016 19:49

Can anyone tell me what's happened to Chummy? Thought the whole family must have moved away but Pete was back in it this week.

Optimist1 · 04/02/2016 20:09

Didn't she go off (with the baby, I guess) to work with the poor in Africa for a year? Sorry, I'm very hazy and not always reliable .

AtiaoftheJulii · 04/02/2016 20:24

No, they came back from the missionary thing. Isn't she now at the mother and baby place?

Imnotaslimjim · 05/02/2016 00:21

As far as I can remember she's working at the mum and baby place, and Peter comes to stay at nonnatus when he had night shifts x

BertieBotts · 06/02/2016 13:15

Oh yes, I remember!

Lj8893 · 07/02/2016 20:02

Who's watching?

MrsJamin · 07/02/2016 20:24

Me! As soon as the guy said he was going to university I knew the woman would be pregnant! Not sure how they're going to resolve it...

Freeandsinglewater · 07/02/2016 20:25

Shot gun wedding!!

MrsJamin · 07/02/2016 20:29

Had to Google brow presentation, looks like most end up in caesarian section, was that standard in 1961 though?

Lj8893 · 07/02/2016 20:30

oh my god Sad

lavazzzalover · 07/02/2016 20:30

oh how sad. Did they really do that back in the day?

Catzpyjamas · 07/02/2016 20:31

This is painful to watch Sad

diddl · 07/02/2016 20:31

Poor Barbara!

I do prefer her & Tom to Tom & Trixie.

Looks like it's going to be Tom & Trixie, though.

Lj8893 · 07/02/2016 20:31

So horrible!

Palomb · 07/02/2016 20:35

I think leaving obviously disabled or sick babies to die was very much the norm untill recently :( Awful isn't it. I knew several ladies who had lost babies to still birth in the 40's and 50's but had never been allowed to see them and I always wondered what the real story was.

SealSong · 07/02/2016 20:35

Bloody hell. I did not expect that. Poor little mite. Sad

polkadotdelight · 07/02/2016 20:36

I missed the crucial 5 minutes when the baby was born (DS was crying). What happened?

MrsJamin · 07/02/2016 20:37

Another thalidomide baby I think.

EnlightenedOwl · 07/02/2016 20:38

How was the thalidomide link with limb/developmental abnormalities established?

MrsJamin · 07/02/2016 20:40

Really feel for the young man being forced to work at the factory. Poor guy.
