I thought it could was disrespectful of len to say that Kellie had won the final in his eyes, before the results were announced. How difficult must that have been for the other contestants to hear. No wonder jay looked underwhelmed and shy as the winner was announced, it must have felt bitter sweet that He'd been publicly told he didn't deserve it.

Redcrayons · 21/12/2015 10:31

Glittery - just watched it again in iplayer. Wouldn't say they are scowling, they look a bit disappointed.

Dipankrispaneven · 21/12/2015 10:39

NoahVale, I think a few previous contestants have done more in the dance field off the back of Strictly. Tom Chambers was one - his acting career was more in straight drama previously, and subsequently he's done more in things like Top Hat. And I think Jill Halfpenny did a spell in Chicago. I guess that of necessity it will add a string to the bow of the ones already in showbiz but won't make much difference to the others other than making them more high profile.

NoahVale · 21/12/2015 10:43

oh thanks dipan

IPityThePontipines · 21/12/2015 11:19

I think the judges backed Kelly to try and counter fix claims, but it seems to have backfired anyway.

Will have to have a wander over to DS...

OnlyLovers · 21/12/2015 11:32

It is a travesty that Jay won. Showdance my arse. The judges criticised them for just rehashing bits from their old dances, and all Aliona could say in their defence was that 'some of the moves were made more complex.' Whoop-de-doo.

All the work the others put into theirs! They should be embarrassed.

Jay's paso is massively overrated too. If any other man had stomped and flung his arms about like hams like Jay did, he'd have been slated. And their quickstep was underwhelming.

I thought Kellie was the best over all three dances and her showdance was hands down the most showstopping. I wish they'd done their Viennese Waltz instead of the Charleston. She should have won.

Georgia's Charleston was the dance of the night. Her showdance theme of a blind person needing 'fixing' was uncomfortable and inappropriate and the dance itself underwhelming.

Katie's showdance was let down by her own limitations, but brave and dramatic. Good for them.

I thought there was a distinct coolness to everyone up on the balcony when Jay was announced the winner. And the studio audience's response was muted too.

Again, a travesty. Sad and depressing that the voting audience seemed to prefer warmed-over stuff they'd seen before to anything new, exciting and challenging.

Dipankrispaneven · 21/12/2015 12:22

I think it is far too simplistic to suggest that Jay's showdance was nothing more than a rehash of old dances. It clearly wasn't, and making such different styles run together seamlessly is not an easy thing to do, nor is it easy to dance something like that and make it look as good as they did. I thought the point of a showdance is that it is supposed to be entertaining, not that it necessarily has to be massively showy. It would appear that a lot of viewers did in fact find this one entertaining.

Snowstorm · 21/12/2015 12:29

Will Jay and Aliona and Georgia and Giovanni be dancing together again on tour?

Snowstorm · 21/12/2015 12:30

PS. Re. the DM photos of Jay and Aliona ... they're obviously very close but my first reaction was ... he wore THAT to the after show party?!!!!!

OnlyLovers · 21/12/2015 12:31

It would appear that a lot of viewers did in fact find this one entertaining.

Yes, that's what I find depressing. The familiar over the new and exciting.

I really hate the kind of showdance where the woman just gets flung around in increasingly difficult and messy lifts, but this went too far the other way IMO.

I agree making different styles run together seamlessly is hard and he danced it well. However, while they didn't actually use the term 'rehash', he and Aliona did explicitly say they were going to be doing sections from their previous dances. And, as I said, all she had to say when the judges critiqued it was that they'd made some of the moves a bit harder; she didn't even try to argue that it wasn't basically a montage.

I also meant to say that I don't agree with whoever said showdances always ought to be Latin-based –you can absolutely make a ballroom-based showdance showy. Some of the American Smooths from the series have been pretty much showdance material.

Dipankrispaneven · 21/12/2015 12:33

I thought the DM photos were, as usual, making something out of nothing. Not one of them features anything even resembling a snog, and you can bet that the paparazzo concerned was desperate to catch one.

MrsJayy · 21/12/2015 12:41

That picture looked posed for

Snowstorm · 21/12/2015 12:41

Just a thought ... I think that Jay has a young boy mentality, lost in the body of a 25 year old man and that Aliona recognised that and all the hand holding and touching is nurturing and loving as opposed to romantic, if that makes any sense? All the face holding - if you're not diving in for a snog then that tends to be what you do to get the attention of a small child is it not? Obviously she's competitive and well aware that voters like to sense a relationship between the pros and their partners too, preferable romantic.

Hmmm ... probably time to get a life and move on from Strictly for the next year now! Xmas Grin

Inkanta · 21/12/2015 12:43

To be honest I thought the main problem with Jay's show dance was his white pants. They were seriously bad fitting - tight around his thighs and slack around his bottom - sliding down. It made his movements look ugly and non graceful, although I think he was actually dancing it well.

The sewing room needs to get its act together for next years pants making.

OnlyLovers · 21/12/2015 12:45

All the face holding - if you're not diving in for a snog then that tends to be what you do to get the attention of a small child is it not?

Christ, that's creepy! I've found the infantilisation of Jay and the way many women seem to have reacted to him like a mother (I'm particularly looking at you, Tess Daly) extremely unwholesome.

He is like a particularly bamboozled-looking toddler.

morningtoncrescent62 · 21/12/2015 13:03

I agree, OnlyLovers, I'm a bit disturbed by the way the little-boy narrative took off around Jay. Is it just me, or did it only happen in the last few weeks? Maybe it was going on from the beginning and I just didn't notice it.

I thought it could was disrespectful of len to say that Kellie had won the final in his eyes

Hadn't Darcy already done that with one of the others? Can't remember which one, but she said they were number one in her eyes, which I thought was a bit much.

Oh how I will miss ITT this evening. I want interviews, silly random games, Karen Hardy's comments on the choreography, Craig in his panto costume. Sigh. I'd even put up with Georgia crying over Joe Varney if it meant another ITT fix.

OnlyLovers · 21/12/2015 13:19

I think it was only the last few weeks, yes. I presume they couldn't find anything of real interest to spin a narrative around!

Darcey said Jay was number one in her eyes. I agree it's all very inappropriate and they should refrain from making comments like that.

I also think they ought to have had a word with Bruno for his constant fawning over 'pretty, gorgeous, darling' Georgia. Telling her he was saving her in the dance-off and concluding his comments with 'sweetie darling' was a particular low point.

She was infantilised madly too. I found her princess Belle dress and look particularly disturbing. It is interesting that that was the week she was in the dance-off; maybe a lot of people were pissed off/weirded out by the little-girl stuff!

Dipankrispaneven · 21/12/2015 15:38

What I really wanted out of Zoe's last interview with Vicky Gill was a question asking what the hell went on with Kellie's costumes and how come they were so awful when they were capable of producing really lovely costumes week after week for Katie. I know Katie's body shape was probably easier to work with, but Kellie's isn't that unusual, and they regularly manage to produce much nicer clothes for slebs with much more awkward figures. I guess Zoe could never have put it that baldly, but she could maybe have tactfully introduced a reference to general opinion from harpies like us on social media and asked Vicky to comment.

MrsJamin · 21/12/2015 19:02

Pics of Joanne and Karen - you can hardly blame them for looking disappointed for Kevin!

Yes I think it's entirely reasonable for them to want their DH/DB to win and look disappointed when he doesn't.
Harsh of the cameras to go straight to them I think. If I was directing I'd have had them at the front in case Kevin won, but 3 angle plans: K wins - cut to balcony. G wins - cut to boyfriend. J wins - cut to Wanted blokes. And for the second two, notify Karen and Jo to step back and let other contestants with more convincing smiles (Carol Kirkwood would be ideal) more forward.

emotionsecho · 21/12/2015 19:20

OnlyLovers for me K&K did two Charlestons on the night, their show dance was pretty much a Charleston with a few Lindy-hop type moves thrown in. Their Tango, although good footwork, they had to ruin with the 'comedy' moves, I just wanted them to give the gurning faces a rest and for once dance a serous dance seriously.

I really enjoyed Jay's dance, thought it was classy and clever.

OnlyLovers · 21/12/2015 19:39

emotions, I don't disagree about the Charleston(s); as I said, I think their VW would have been good as a) it was a better dance IMO and b) it would have added more variety. Having said that, they said their Star Wars Charleston 'summed up' their partnership and it clearly meant a lot to them, so fair play.

I also don't disagree about the style and content of their show dance, but I do think it had the element of dazzle and 'show' that dance needs, and which I believe Jay's was lacking. And, sorry to repeat myself but this is what I feel, I just thought Jay's was lazy and basically a cynical rehash of his 'greatest hits'.

Kellie and Kevin's tango was clever, IMO – they were given a difficult brief (marrying a tango with 60s mod stylings) and did very well to get across both of those elements. I know what you mean about the faces, but I think, unfortunately, a bit of a 'comedy', or at least a broad, feel to the performance was necessary to knit the two very different styles together.

emotionsecho · 21/12/2015 19:58

But for me Only that was typical of all their dances, all a bit "we're mad us" and doing two dances which were so similar in style was as much of a cop-out as what you've criticised Jay and Aliona for, at least J&A's dance mixed several different styles and moves whereas K&K's was just a re-hash of one dance style which they then repeated for their favourite dance.

Personally I think K&K should have done an American Smooth type show dance or done the AS for their favourite dance.

emotionsecho · 21/12/2015 20:11

Also, two such similar dances can't be referred to as "new and exciting".
