Downton Thread 3 - 11 October

katemiddletonsothermum · 11/10/2015 20:44

Am starting another thread because the last one had 12 pages.

Wowzers, 17 minutes to go. What will happen? Will Mr and Mrs Carson be able to look each other in the eye? Will Daisy finally stop being annoying? Will Edith finally become the Pope?

ohhhhhhhhhhhh........

Sorry to disappoint you Nancy - I was a teeny bit ill last Monday morning so DH and I have vowed never to drink more than a bottle of wine on a school night.

If it makes you feel any better, I had a 2 day hangover this weekend after drinking my body weight in red wine and vodka on Friday.

See this THIS is why Thomas annoys me!! He wants to make friends. He's a tortured soul. And yet he sometimes behaves like an utter nasty cock for no apparent reason! Angry

Cerseirys · 11/10/2015 22:29

The thing about Mr Mason is that I can't help but remember that we've all seen his cock when he was on This Life and Shameless...

YouBastardSockBalls · 11/10/2015 22:32

Cerseirys!???Shock

YouBastardSockBalls · 11/10/2015 22:34

I'm distantly related to Mr Mason apparently

katemiddletonsothermum · 11/10/2015 22:46

Cue Gwen: "You know noooooootttttttthhhhhthing, Mr Mason."

OP posts:
Cerseirys · 11/10/2015 22:50

He was Egg's dad in This Life and shagged Anna, which was when we saw his cock. Then he was Yvonne's mum's boyfriend in an episode of Shameless but his character was chased out of the house starkers when he gave her an unexpected golden shower. And we saw his cock again as he ran down the street!

Cerseirys · 11/10/2015 22:51

(Anna from This Life obviously, not Anna from Downton. Though that'd be one in the eye for Bates...)

katemiddletonsothermum · 11/10/2015 23:08

Well, that would get the storyline going cerseirys - Mr Mason is the father of Anna's baby....

I do feel sorry for Thomas though, at least he's a rounded character with flaws and a very well developed self-destruct button.

Enjoyed the episode. Rather shoehorning old deceased characters in. Rather clunky but hasn't it always been ? Agree Roberts health at risk the only thing that will change violets mind over the bloody boring hospital storyline. Agree the idea of Mary ending up with a car racer is stupid (and reminiscent of house of Eliot).

I hope the pregnancy goes OK for the Bates. Would be nice to see daisy settled but she needs to calm down!

Thomas needs taking in hand. That was shitty doing that to Gwen glad it backfired and lord 6 saw through it.

But again reality is an Earl wouldn't care about a butler being kind as long as the house was run without inconvenience to the family.

BertrandRussell · 12/10/2015 11:39

Carson's obviously seriously regretting rushing into matrimony..........

Cerseirys · 12/10/2015 11:51

Perhaps he couldn't get the little butler to stand to attention when on his honeymoon?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/10/2015 11:58
Grin

What a treat for connoisseurs of British female actors that episode was - Harriet Walter and Samantha Bond as well as Penelope Wilton and Maggie Smith. Can he shoehorn Judi Dench in somehow as well?

Cerseirys · 12/10/2015 12:28

Dame J is such a good actress that she could play the mysterious Mr Coyle and get away with it!

tribpot · 12/10/2015 13:05

If he can't get Dench and Mirren in somewhere, he's really not trying.

What utter bollocks that episode really was. Fellowes seems to be writing basically for his American audience now - that whole 'big government is bad' schtick is straight out of the Republican manifesto. God forbid the people of Downton have access to modern healthcare if it means ceding some control to a larger institution. The same people of Downton who, it might be noted, fought and won the First World War on behalf of these bloody toffs (I've just turned into Daisy).

However, obviously the best thing to do for a threatened miscarriage is to drive at night to York for the late train to London, that would definitely have happened. Glad that we have glossed over the extent of the pain involved in the stitch .

Did no-one else pick up on the hilarious 'female Pope' reference? I swear they dubbed that in after our thread last week. Apparently now everyone is completely on board with women's liberation, Mary and Edith are career gals and all that's left is for Cora to start her own rock'n'roll band.

Pooseyfrumpture · 12/10/2015 13:09

Who was it that made the comment about Lord6's funeral? This series is going to be 4 weddings and a funeral - and he's the funeral.

tribpot · 12/10/2015 13:12

It was Lady Ros, aka Edith's real mother (notice she made a reference to not having great-grandchildren to worry about).

They seem determined to keep the policeman in the story, don't they? I wonder if there's a spinoff in the works for PC Plod solving crimes in rural North Yorkshire.

regenerationfez · 12/10/2015 13:23

I need a scarf they have also mentioned Rose at least once in every episode! Wonder if she'll turn up? all the Christmas specials so far have been about her. I dont mind really, I Luffs her!

Lady Ros is Ediths real mother???? Have i missed something??? I normally have to watch Downton whilst doing some other tedious task like ironing or sewing on Beavers badges, so its possible ive missed a massive plot!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/10/2015 13:34

I think that's wishful thinking on tribpot's thinking! She is a very good mother substitute.

tribpot · 12/10/2015 13:37

No no, we have just been speculating that one of the many plot twists Uncle Julian is going to pull out of the bag this season is that Lady R is Edith's mother and E was passed off as a child of Robert and Cora due to the disgrace. The theory (which I find highly credible) is based on the fact Rosamund has no interest in any of the others, seemed extremely opinionated on the subject of Edith giving Marigold up, and they both have red hair. It's a slam dunk - as I expect the Dowager Countess to say at dinner any day now.

Was Rose mentioned last night? I'm sure she will be back for the final ep.

Cerseirys · 12/10/2015 13:44

Not last night but the week before, with hints that a little Aldridge was on it's way.

regenerationfez · 12/10/2015 13:51

No she was mentioned last night too, when Edith said the last time she met that bloke who helped her with the editing they were with her cousin Rose and that grouse hunting thing with the other identikit suitors.

The Edith Lady R. thing does make sense, but surely that storyline being done for Rosamund and Edith would be overkill?

tribpot · 12/10/2015 14:11

It could be the bombshell that Downton ends on, like the moment in Empire Strikes Back when Vader tells Luke he is his father.

Edith didn't meet Bertie Pelham last night, did she? That was the week before.

Incidentally, could Thomas be any more annoying and whiny about his lot in life? Okay JF, we get the point, for middle-ranking servants this was a bad time - the opportunities for advancement are shrinking all the time but you've a limited set of skills for the type of jobs now emerging, plus a reluctance to have to start again at the foot of another ladder.

regenerationfez · 12/10/2015 15:01

Oh yeah maybe. I watched 2 on the bounce ( have a deadline on Friday, so perfect time to sit in front of the telly watching period dramas!) Thats my theory shot to hell then!

All the servants are revolting this season.Daisy is a stroppy madam, Thomas is nasty. I don't understand why he didn't go for that last job though. Was the old man just delusional?

Cerseirys · 12/10/2015 15:13

I don't know why he's bothering hanging around Downton, you'd think a guy like him could go far if he moved to London or to the US.
