Downton Thread 3 - 11 October

katemiddletonsothermum · 11/10/2015 20:44

Am starting another thread because the last one had 12 pages.

Wowzers, 17 minutes to go. What will happen? Will Mr and Mrs Carson be able to look each other in the eye? Will Daisy finally stop being annoying? Will Edith finally become the Pope?

ohhhhhhhhhhhh........

Am sure Carson and Hughes should be retired. That was true for Upstairs Downstairs too. I think by the time the series ended, Mrs. Bridges and Hudson should have been about 104.

It's partly a result of success. If the show is successful, you keep moving forward in time, but the actors are aging in real time so they look younger.

Cerseirys · 21/10/2015 17:07

I was off sick and bored today so I watched the first few eps of Downton and spotted that the farmer Mrs C saved in episode 2 is the same one who gave Edith her first snog in season 2!

regenerationfez · 21/10/2015 17:12

It's not so much the physical ageing, which would be hard as ageing makeup on the whole cast would take forever, I would have thought, more the way they are written. Daisy in particular has not matured as a character in 12 years. If anything, cshe has got more stroppy teenagerish as time has gone on!

Fiderer · 22/10/2015 07:21

regeneration Agree, that's why I said she was 12 when it started and is 12 and a half now.

She was told by some visiting bod that she could earn her own way in London as a cook but didn't want to. From what Lady Rosamund said, good cooks are hard to get and harder to keep.

Am curious to see if she ever takes the bloody exams they're always on about. If she passes (and I hope she does or we'll have more "T'int right") and leaves service, surely she'll just go to the farm with Pa Mason? Am sure the pigs will be enthralled by her knowledge of the Crimean War.

Taytocrisps · 22/10/2015 07:23

I think Daisy and Tom should get together. They'd have far more in common than Mary and Tom.

SheHasAWildHeart · 22/10/2015 10:26

They'd have far more in common than Mary and Tom.
Mary did say to Tom the episode after he returned that they were happy to see him because he's their "brother" so am not sure if they will get together.
I think someone somewhere will die and Racing Car Nephew will be bestowed a title and then Mary will marry him.

katemiddletonsothermum · 22/10/2015 20:03

RIGHT - THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!!!

I have reported myself to MNHQ and asked them to delete this thread as it's causing confusion and delay with the other DA thread.

Sorry about this. But the other thread will take over from where we are here.

squoosh · 22/10/2015 20:05

Errrrr, why? Confused

I like this thread. I think people can just about cope with two.

katemiddletonsothermum · 22/10/2015 20:19

Oh I dunno, am trying to do the right thing. And failing.

OP posts:
hels71 · 22/10/2015 20:44

I like this thread......and i can easily look at the other one too.............

katemiddletonsothermum · 22/10/2015 20:58

OOOOPpppswssssss. OK, they're probably too busy to delete it anyway.

I watched the latest episode last night on catch up and, darlings, I was a tad disappointed. Not NEARLY enough blood.

And why did Mr Mason want Daisy to go and live with him? "It' only a twenty minute walk." Yes, that's twenty minutes she's got to get up earlier just so that she can cook him breakfast. Typical man. Angry

What will we do when it's all over? Apart from watching the box sets obviously. What about Upstairs Downstairs? Is that available to watch anywhere? It used to be on when I was a kid but I don't really remember it. At least, I just remember the theme music.

Fiderer · 23/10/2015 07:16

I think that the production levels and the clothes which are really v good in DA would make UpstairsDownstairs seem really pedestrian, however good the cast and stories.

I'm going to re-watch DA just for the clothes, the sets, details etc. cos I'll know the plots and won't get distracted by Matthew's Tingle or intimidated by Carson's eyebrows.

Merguez · 23/10/2015 09:02

The production values in DA may be high - obviously a lot of ketchup was used in that last scene - but the plots and scripts are beyond execrable.

I now watch it out of a sense of duty - I've come this far so I should get to the end - and also to see how bad it is this week.

katemiddletonsothermum · 23/10/2015 10:49

Did anyone else have trouble logging in last night? I had a panic attack thinking I'd been banned because I'd reported myself on my own thread.

Anyway, it's still here, so let's carry on with the conversation Smile

OP posts:
regenerationfez · 23/10/2015 13:05

merguez that's exactly why I'm still watching. I feel a bit that now the end is nigh I need to see it through to the end, in spite of the ridiculous and sometimes boring plots!

YouBastardSockBalls · 25/10/2015 11:27

So what do we think will happen to Lord Carrie tonight?

I know they showed him sitting up in bed, but personally I don't think he's out of the woods yet...!

Davros · 25/10/2015 12:52

Agree with whoever said Matthew Goode will get a title and be eligible to marry Mary Frosty Face

regenerationfez · 25/10/2015 15:31

I don't think he's out of the woods either. There must be some point to the tedious hospital storyline please and I think he's it. How many more episodes do we have?

Merguez · 26/10/2015 07:24

Such a dull episode last night no-one can even be bothered to post on here... or is there another thread somewhere teeming with activity?

hels71 · 26/10/2015 07:31

There is another thread, but it's not exactly teeming.....

Scoobydoo8 · 26/10/2015 08:06

I'm still Hmm at the lack of reaction when LG vomited blood across the table and guests!!

Surely it would take days to get over a horror like that - for everyone.

It was so matter of fact, seemed hilarious, no antibiotics in those days, operations would be touch and go. Oh, well.

And the Minister for Health happily wandering off - surely miles and miles of gruelling travel - on no food.

squoosh · 26/10/2015 10:27

I wish they would stop banging on about the bloody hospital. No one cares.

Honestly, a storyline involving the state of the drains would be more gripping than this.

squoosh · 26/10/2015 10:29

And for the love of God give Thomas a bit of happiness. If his tears are building to a suicide attempt I'll be very bloody angry.

sadwidow28 · 26/10/2015 19:14

The farmer Mrs Crawley saved in episode 2 is the same one who gave Edith her first snog in season 2.

Yes. That was John Drake (he had dropsy of the heart). Edith helped out on the farm driving the tractor.
