Downton Thread 3 - 11 October

katemiddletonsothermum · 11/10/2015 20:44

Am starting another thread because the last one had 12 pages.

Wowzers, 17 minutes to go. What will happen? Will Mr and Mrs Carson be able to look each other in the eye? Will Daisy finally stop being annoying? Will Edith finally become the Pope?

ohhhhhhhhhhhh........

Squoosh Rupert Frazer played an MP in house of Eliot.

Ah. Thank you! That's where I know him from!

A married MP who had an affair with Evie! (my knowledge of crappy period drama clearly knows no bounds!)

Fiderer · 20/10/2015 10:33

Maybe JF sees the hospital as some symbol of all the Downton Years.

Where Isobel first put her oar in. Matthew's Tingle. Sybil volunteering unlike a propah Lady, wearing a uniform and working gasp shifts so not always home for Dinner with The Family. Turning the House into the convalescent home. Thomas working there (war dodging) and becoming friendly with gasp Lady Sybil. Then Dr Death and the pre-eclampsia demise of Saint Sybil.

Now perhaps a symbol of change and the loss of local power from them up at t'big house who rightly rule over t'lowly village folk and who know what's Right.

Still, the more Lady Violet the better for me.

SheHasAWildHeart · 20/10/2015 10:39

So much for boring Mary, I'd prefer a spin off with Edith, the Bloomsbury set, her magazine and apartment in London.

squoosh · 20/10/2015 11:00

Edith's voice though! Can't stand her posh droney voice.

Fiderer · 20/10/2015 11:53

Yes, Edith's voice. She moves her eyes more than her mouth when she speaks.

And that "Gosh I don't know, I'm only Edith and I can't do anything" manner she has is flipping annoying too.

Clawdy · 20/10/2015 12:30

Nowhere near as droney and annoying as Mary's though.

Cerseirys · 20/10/2015 12:33

It's funny hearing Michelle Dockery speak IRL as she's from Essex and sounds nothing like Lady Mary!

squoosh · 20/10/2015 12:49

Mary's is more clipped and bitchy. Maybe Edith's voice is meant to sounds languid but all I hear is droning.

Fiderer · 20/10/2015 14:14

Mary's is so clipped I'm surprised she doesn't cut her tongue. But it suits her brittle character and imperiousness.

Edith is weedy and her voice is equally weedy. I'd like to see her confront Mary verbally and then flatten her with one of Mrs Patmore's copper pots.

As a bonus Daisy would be caught in the crossfire/crosspot and end up in a coma until 2215. When she could rave about "It t'aint right" and someone would push her out of an airlock.

SheHasAWildHeart · 20/10/2015 14:58

Daisy ranting "the unions!" was funny.

squoosh · 20/10/2015 15:01

"It t'aint right"

Grin

She doesn't even need a script. I bet the woman who plays Mrs Patmore just gives her a wink and she knows it's her turn to squeak 't'aint right!'.

SheHasAWildHeart · 21/10/2015 11:02

I'm worried about Andy now - he's starting to read so am pretty sure he'll turn into a male version of Daisy shouting about social injustice and the unions and before you know it they'll both have set Downton on fire and ride away on Mr Mason's pigs.

Cerseirys · 21/10/2015 11:08

I think it's been covered before but exactly how old is Daisy? The actress must be about 30 but surely by 30 a maid in Daisy's position would've graduated to a proper cook's role like Mrs P's and would've moved on? I still think she was foolish not to take the position in the US.

Fiderer · 21/10/2015 11:22

Daisy was 12 in S1 and is 12.5 now.

squoosh · 21/10/2015 11:26

If memory serves didn't Daisy marry William on his death bed? No wonder she's always flinging things around the kitchen and shrieking at people, the poor girl is massively sexually frustrated. In the 84 years she's worked at Downton she's never had so much of a sniff of a gentleman caller.

T'aint right!

Fiderer · 21/10/2015 11:36

She went gooey over one of the footmen, didn't she?

Vying for his attentions with Ivy? It was a sordid tale of thwarted love, mistaken Valentine cards and much snivelling into pudding bowls.

Luckily Mrs Patmore was on hand with a rolling pin to thwack at them and an exasperated "Ehhhh, I dun't knaw"

Annarose2014 · 21/10/2015 11:36

I was wondering about Daisys age as in the last ep they seemed to be saying Andy was like, only 18 or something.

I thought Hang on! Then Daisys about 10 years older than him!

Annarose2014 · 21/10/2015 11:44

Ok, so DA started in 1912. Daisy was supposed to be very young then but she clearly was older than 12 herself.

The youngest Daisy could realistically be in the 1st series was 13/14? Do we buy that?

William died in July 1918. In which case she married William at 19/20.

And so that means she's 27 now!!!

Fiderer · 21/10/2015 11:51

squoosh were you on the Poldark threads? Who was the drunken sot of a servant who was often muttering what has now become part of my vocabulary?

"T'int Right, T'int Fair, T'int Proper"

SansaryaAgain · 21/10/2015 11:55

I assumed she was about 16-18 in season 1, which would put her at 30ish now. I also don't understand why she didn't grab the Stateside opportunity with both hands!

squoosh · 21/10/2015 11:56

Judd!

Or was it Prudie?

Fiderer · 21/10/2015 12:11

Yes Grin Jud. Thanks, have looked him up, had forgotten one:

T'int fit.

regenerationfez · 21/10/2015 12:29

The actress that plays Daisy was one of the ugly sisters in Cinderella, and she looked older, so I don't know why they keep her so young looking and so childish in her behaviour. 27 would have been much older in those days than now, and she should have progressed. I think this series really shows that as much as I love Downton, it really is at the end of its shelf life. The younger actors really need to move on to be able to ever get work again. They are being poorly written and given nonsense storylines.

SheHasAWildHeart · 21/10/2015 12:41

But none of them, except the babies, have aged. Am sure Carson and Hughes should be retired.

SheHasAWildHeart · 21/10/2015 12:42

Alas I don't think Thomas is going to get a 'happily ever after'.
