ITV’s six episode thriller series Unforgotten from former ITV drama executives Laura Mackie and Sally Haynes’ fledgling indie Mainstreet Pictures will premiere on Thursday October 8th at 9pm, it has been announced.

Penned by Undeniable scribe Chris Lang, Unforgotten tells the story of an 39 year old cold investigation into the murder of a boy who was killed in 1976. The modern day investigation is run by DCI Cassie Stuart and DI Sunil ‘Sunny’ Khan, who must re-examine the evidence and investigate the key suspects – Robert Greaves, Frank Philip Cross, Lizzie Wilton and Eric Slater – in order to close the case. The series utilises a multi-stranded narrative, set in different parts of the country, which explores and connects each of the principle characters.

The six-parter is produced by Mainstreet Pictures and features a large cast that includes Sanjeev Bhaskar (The Kumars), Nicola Walker (Last Tango In Halifax), Trevor Eve (Waking The Dead), Bernard Hill (The Grid), Ruth Sheen (Our Girl), Tom Courtenay (The Dresser), Gemma Jones (Marvellous), Brian Bovell (Death in Paradise), Cherie Lunghi (Casualty), Hannah Gordon (Hustle), Claire Goose (Mount Pleasant) Tamzin Malleson (Midsomer Murders), Peter Egan (Downton Abbey), and Frances Tomelty (Catastrophe). Ripper Street helmer Andy Wilson was the director.

I'm disappointed we didn't know more about Nicholas (2nd body)

Jackiebrambles · 12/11/2015 22:51

God, I found the last scenes with the son and Claire utterly awful. I just went cold, so chilling :(

Great drama, they were a fab detective team so I'm glad they are doing a second series.

HelenaDove · 12/11/2015 23:13

Me too Greenwood. In fact i much prefer this to Broadchurch.

MorrisZapp · 12/11/2015 23:20

Tom Courtenays performance was astonishing in the confession scenes. Bloody hell. I believed him.

Sansoora · 12/11/2015 23:22

Tom Courtenays performance was astonishing in the confession scenes. Bloody hell. I believed him.

He was perfect. Wasn't he? Not a hint of ham acting about him!

MorrisZapp · 12/11/2015 23:26

I wonder if they'll scare up as classy an ensemble for the next lot. Wasn't so keen on Trevor Eve right enough, still not sure why he was part of it all.

Bernard Hill was superb, as was Hannah Gordon. Just totally convincing.

ButterflyUpSoHigh · 12/11/2015 23:26

I wish they had shown Jimmy a bit rather than just the flashbacks. The ending wasn't a disappointment. Looking forward to series 2.

Sansoora · 12/11/2015 23:32

*He was the smokescreen, the sub plot that was intended to make more of the series than it actually was.

Baconyum · 13/11/2015 00:04

OK I clearly missed a bit (dd interrupted near end) how do we know frank killed himself?

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 13/11/2015 00:25

He was found hanged in his prison cell, Baconyum. Self inflicted. It was a blink and you'd miss it scene.

CainInThePunting · 13/11/2015 00:37

As someone up thread asked, how was the nail in Jimmy's finger bone explained or is it assumed that he was tortured but not killed by Sir Phillip?

Baconyum · 13/11/2015 00:56

Grr at dd! Her timing is UNBELIEVABLE when it comes to this sort of thing. I'd even told her this was the last episode of a thing and what she wanted definitely could've waited 5 mins!

NoahVale · 13/11/2015 06:21

I was unhappy with the ending in the respect of her son. Why did he suddenly behave like this? is he taking after her and being crazy, or was the dad always a bully and now the son is.
perhaps the dad isnt a bully after all.

NoahVale · 13/11/2015 06:26

so glad aobut lizzie though

Fiderer · 13/11/2015 08:21

That was a neat & tidy ending, I thought, and I do like things wrapped up with maybe an occasional "Maybe this maybe that" depending on the story.

Only thing I didn't think worked was Sir P. I know he did his howling last week showing his emotional side, i.e. that he had one, but the son reporting him because he loved him and Sir P caving in was too far a stretch from what we've seen of his character.

And no way would a second series revisit this case. But good news that there will be one.

Also liked the Lizzie & Curtis ending. And the football lads.
And the Thea bit & wedding. Hannah Gordon's face at the wedding.
Cassie sliding the photo again and again across the table.

The son (Matt?) being so cruel was unexpected and imo a bit jarring. "This is what we are now" or whatever it was he said showed all he cared about was himself & his reputation which was in character with what his brother said early on about him visiting sporadically and his not wanting his daughter around his mum.

Frances Tomelty at the grave - again, nothing mawkish, really well played.

Fiderer · 13/11/2015 08:24

Think a better ending for Sir P would have been him getting away with it but his children wanting nothing more to do with him, so he'd lose what he said was the reason for all the ambition and money.

And Cherie Lunghi slowly pulling away too.

firesidechat · 13/11/2015 09:14

Of course Thea is the child of Father Rob. It was obvious as soon as she appeared on screen. Why wouldn't she be?

I thought it was an excellent series and the ending was very satisfying. A mix of tragic events and resolved issues. I loved it.

firesidechat · 13/11/2015 09:24

I can believe the bit about the son treating Claire badly. We only see the ditsy, confused old lady, but she was capable of killing 2 men and living with that for decades before the dementia complicated things. There is no excuse for his behaviour, but perhaps it's the script writers way of making her suffer for her crimes. Or he's a nasty piece of work.

I just hope they don't do a Broadchurch with the second series and decide to do a rehash of everything we've learnt so far. The police characters were amazing - no affairs, no alcoholism, just good, caring police work.

ThatsNotMyRabbit · 13/11/2015 09:29

I thought the acting was exceptional from all the cast - with a special mention for Gemma Jones. Absolutely outstanding. Can't wait for series 2.

I'd never heard of Tom Courtney before he was in the Royle Family! But after this, for me he's turned into one of those "Watch just because he's in it" actors.

Clawdy · 13/11/2015 10:17

I remember him in Billy Liar and The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner....and Pasha in Doctor Zhivago. Always been a brilliant actor.

Elendon · 13/11/2015 10:59

I'm with Baconyum on the ending.

To add, Eric was a man, well versed in deception. He admitted to doing rough sex, which was his explanation to the injuries caused to the man his sister said if the police hadn't interfered, he would have died.

I think Eric liked rough sex with men. And for Cassie to believe him was not plausible. The ending was lazy, not at all a twist. I'm not sure I'll be watching the next series. The ending was such a disappointment (can't stand teary music interposed with snippets of how all the characters 'moved on'.)

quirkychick · 13/11/2015 11:01

I have rewatched the end part and feel much happier about the ending. I like that there is just a bit of ambiguity with whether Claire did it, as Eric seemed such a nasty piece of work. Matt seems thoroughly horrible too. The "you always were an evil bitch", I wonder what she was like before the dementia, perhaps quite a different character.

SuckingEggs · 13/11/2015 11:07

What was it that Matt said to his mother (when she went to stay with his family) about something she'd done to scare his son (her grandson)?

It was very uncomfortable seeing him being so awful to her but perhaps she was psychotic?

Agree –Nicola Walker, Gemma Jones and Tom Courtenay were superb!

If you read the link that was posted upthread (to the Radio Times article), you'll get some of the answers to questions posed here.

I agree with what you say ^^, Fiderer.

SuckingEggs · 13/11/2015 11:09

I did feel sorry for Claire - indicative of how PND was treated back then (and sadly, now)... This is something Chris Lang, the writer, speaks about, too.

Baconyum · 13/11/2015 11:16

I think it was lazy writing to make Clare the murderer without addressing the assault
