I saw a massive poster for Sunday night's new season, just as the tube train arrived. I let my train home go so I could stare in detail at the characters' new looks. Who are the two blokes on the far left - have they been on before?

There is a This Is England characters catch-up documentary show on Channel4 tonight (Friday) after new Gogglebox, so prob 10pm.

Yes I would watch the film first. It is def the precursor to the TV series, and has all the same actors.

I believe everything is on 4 on demand for free. Am I right?

Yeah it is

RufusTheReindeer · 13/09/2015 09:49

I will be watching

I love this is england.

The rape scene was harrowing, I've got the film and series so far and I've watched them all a few times but I've only seen the rape once. I fast forward it now

Id love for my 16 year old to watch it and i have let him watch a few 18s after I've vetted them...but there is too much to vet in this is England. I think part of the problem maybe that its too real

Im sure to miss hitting the pause butten and making him shut his eyes

Decanter · 13/09/2015 13:21

Great thank you Smile

I re watched the episode following the rape when Lol does what she does with the thing and combo comes along (trying not to spoil) and the scene with mick and lol was extraordinary. I remember reading an interview with Vicky McClure where she described the visceral aggression of filming that scene, it's basically real violence, she was all bruised and emotionally scarred afterwards. You can sense her fear and adrenaline when she's talking to him before she gets the thing out and she's sort of jerky, not making complete sense, it's just so perfectly done. I thinks she's an extraordinary and incredible actor.

CambridgeBlue · 13/09/2015 22:15

What did anyone think then? I was so looking forward to this (loved the others if that's the right word for something that can be pretty hard to watch at times) but I really didn't like this. Nothing seemed to happen and the bits with Woody and his parents were just ridiculous and pretty unbelievable. Hard to say more without spoiling it for anyone how hasn't seen it yet but I hope the next episode is better - looks like Combo is back so it could well be.

RufusTheReindeer · 13/09/2015 22:48

cambridge

I watched it, i heard one of the actors say that the first one is quite "light hearted" and then it gets darker again

It was nice seeing the charactors again...never been keen on smell though i always liked Compo, in the series at any rate

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 14/09/2015 00:14

Looking forward to next weeks, really enjoyed ep 1. I watched Dead Mans Shoes again last night, I love Shane Meadows.

WaggleBee · 14/09/2015 05:21

I've seen numerous rape scenes on TV or in film but this one was the worst - maybe because of the 'real' style of Meadows film -making and it made me irrationally angry with him as a film - maker. I that scene tainted everything he'd done before or since.

It shocked me like no other fictional tv scene has ever done. Couldn't sleep and felt sick. I didn't watch it again and will be avoiding the new series. Can appreciate why people like the series though.

WaggleBee · 14/09/2015 05:22

Icouldbe Sorry meant to say after quoting you, that I feel the same way. I think a lot of people did/do.

Lottapianos · 14/09/2015 15:27

It was very lighthearted last night. Brilliantly done as usual. Loved the scene where Woody was on the phone to his parents where he kept reassuring them he was fine and they just weren't listening to him! And everyone arriving at the Town Hall for the Madchester night - I remember that lovely feeling of meeting up with all your mates for a drink and a dance and having the whole night ahead of you.

I've seen them all except '86 and that's by choice - I don't think I could handle watching the full rape scene. I think there was a 2 second clip of it during '88 during one of Lol's flashbacks and that was enough thanks. I love his work though. His Stone Roses film is absolutely brilliant.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 14/09/2015 17:10

There are 2 rape scenes in 86.

Sniff banging made me lol

Candycandle · 16/09/2015 10:09

I'd watch the film and then all the subsequent series in order if I were you. I watched 86 with my husband and I was forever asking questions because there is so much backstory and knock on effects from the film.

Sweetsweetjane · 20/09/2015 22:23

Did anyone watch tonight? Started off quite bright. What a reminder of the gurning 90s, what goes up must come down...

Ledkr · 21/09/2015 06:56

I did, it was hilarious untill it turned darker then I just watched feeling sad and depressed.
Was well done tho said what needed to be said without over playing it.

chosenone · 21/09/2015 07:01

I liked the 'rave' and the trippy loved up feeling was done well. Kellys obviously struggling, and that scene was weird and uncomfortable but did show the mixed up fluidity of it through drug taking. Less harsh and real than the previous rape scenes. Her and gadget made me cry though. The BBQ was good but i was surprised the nurse from 88 is now lol and woodys friend. I think the end suggested impending doom though Sad

Mrsjayy · 21/09/2015 08:35

Poor Kelly that little scene where her dad face appears made me jump the end bit with cadge Sad Dh didnt get the trippiness (is it a word ?) Said it was to distracting it was meant to be i told him, I think Shane meadows is trying to get everybody in it because its the last one thats why the nurse is her friend. I love Harvey he is really funny. I wish the story moved a bit faster though thats my only complaint

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 21/09/2015 09:08

So was Kelly abused by the dad too? I thought she hadn't, it was just Lol. Very well done I thought but the story is moving quite slow if there's only another two parts.

Mrsjayy · 21/09/2015 09:12

She said she wasnt but it was all so disjointed that his image could just have popped into her head she was off her face She did have a picture of him in her purse. I am confused is she not with her girlfriend anymore?

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 21/09/2015 09:27

Maybe its meant to be unclear, I wondered if she was but had blocked it out. I jumped out my skin too when the Dad appeared.
Combos' back next week its going to step up a gear I reckon.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 21/09/2015 09:29

Not sure about the gf. I wish I had watched 88 again before this. I cant remember it all. I didn't spot the new pal was the nurse!

juneau · 21/09/2015 09:29

I can't believe I'd never watched this before - its very good - but that scene last night was grim. The first week was really quite funny, but last night was dark. There was definitely a dark side to rave culture though. I think Shane Meadows is a bit of a genius to recreate that time so accurately. The huge map in the car yesterday was making me piss myself laughing and my grandparents had a Vauxhall Chevette Grin

Cocolepew · 21/09/2015 09:32

I'm really disappointed so far, just seems to be mostly made up of people dancing in slow motion.
Think its a bit shit, and I loved the previous series Sad

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 21/09/2015 09:35

I thought the getting lost and not making it to the cool rave was really accurate! More people were on the edge of the rage culture than actually in it! The raves I went to were all ticketed events with a programme and everything Grin

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 21/09/2015 09:37

Rage cultureConfused Rave obv.
