New (final) 'This Is England 90'. Who's watching?

I saw a massive poster for Sunday night's new season, just as the tube train arrived. I let my train home go so I could stare in detail at the characters' new looks. Who are the two blokes on the far left - have they been on before?

There is a This Is England characters catch-up documentary show on Channel4 tonight (Friday) after new Gogglebox, so prob 10pm.

Oh and yy Lol's wedding dress was bloody awful, but very very 90s. Also agree with whoever said that the guy who plays Harvey's timing had picked up a gear this series - that scene where the guys with shades were saying they had Pro-Plus and him going 'It's not the same thing, it's not the same thing at all' made me proper laugh out loud.

Oh, I'm missing them all already, and it's only last night that it finished. It's been a proper journey.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 05/10/2015 12:06

I love Michael socha. He's such a good actor and fit as. Anyone else love him in bring human?

SurlyCue · 05/10/2015 12:24

Yes agree with your comments on Kelly cruikshank. It makes sense that she was being used for sex. And it makes sense that she wouldnt tell Lol. And why Lol just accepted what she told her. No point arguing, she can tell her in her own time, right now what matters is that she is home. Remember also that Lol kept a secret from kelly for a long time so kelly could be justified in thinking Lol doesnt deserve to know her whole story.

DoubleDeClutchMuch · 05/10/2015 12:29

ah yes that all makes a lot of sense Cruikshank.
and SurleyCue yes, why would Kelly blurt out her whole story on her sister's wedding day anyway.

rogueantimatter · 05/10/2015 13:51

Even if Kelly is and remains clean I don't think we can assume that her story is 'wrapped up'. Her brush with hard drugs and a lifestyle usually doomed to disaster is enough (IMO) to further the theme of the endlessly rippling consequences of drastic actions. And she's likely to have great difficulty with relationships. We don't know if she's come to terms with the role her mum played in the abuse either. Unless I missed something - which is likely given how often I had to dry my eyes and blow my nose. Grin

OutToGetYou · 05/10/2015 14:22

When Kelly was being raped at the rave (I was pretty sure that was what it was supposed to be) she had flashbacks to the film of her dad raping Kev and her mum. So, she either knew about, saw or experienced that in some way. I assumed she had also been abused by him but had buried it.

When she saw Lol* at the wedding she said that everything that had been said at the dinner had made everything make sense. So, I reckon we're supposed to think she was also abused.

Of course we know what happens to Shaun, it's auto-biographical, so he becomes a film director and makes This Is England.....

(* I bet no-one thought Lol would turn out to mean laugh out loud in twenty year's time eh? Esp not the actor who plays Woody who has it tattooed on his hand)

OutToGetYou · 05/10/2015 14:26

"I agree Sean's gf seems out of his league - I found it a bit implausible TBH."

If you were rewriting your own story wouldn't you have Brad Pitt as your DH? ;)

I suppose the idea was that she was attracted to him for his self, rather than his looks. I actually think he is the weakest character though, too whiny by far.

Kelly was def being prostituted. Though there was a lot we simply had to deduce for ourselves.

I am missing it too, still mulling over and still seeing Combo being taken from that van.

SurlyCue · 05/10/2015 14:40

Of course we know what happens to Shaun, it's auto-biographical, so he becomes a film director and makes This Is England

I'm so stupid!! How was this not obvious to me? Is this generally known or are you a genius? Grin

The original was only made 10 years ago IIRC so LOL as laugh out loud would have been known. Did the woody actor really get it tattooed or just the character?

hildasmuriel · 05/10/2015 15:01

I thought it was a fantastic episode, I was willing Combo to show up right to the end. I was so glad to see Lol and Woody happy. Lol is such an amazing character, Vicky McClure is mesmerising in the role and I think Lol has come through so much she will be able to face anything life throws at her, but I hope she's happy and Woody too. The scene with Lol and Kelly was beautifully done, both actors should win awards on that scene alone, although so should the entire cast in relation to the dinner scene. Even the curtain pole with its comedy moment.

I'm a little frustrated that Kelly's story was left unfinished, so much more to explore there with her drug problem and the reality of her relationship with her Dad.

Ditto Milky, I think his actions will haunt and eat him up, Combo was, at least, able apologise to Milky but Milky can never do the same and, I suspect, will find Combo's forgiveness hard to accept.

Definitely room for a 92 focused on these (but please leave Lol and Woody happy, I want to believe they've found happiness).

" Is this generally known or are you a genius? "

I dunno - I said to dp....'funny isn't it, Shaun sounds a bit like Shane...' and he looked at me like I was stupid and said "it's autobiographical...." as if everyone knew that.

I won't tell him he's a genius. I'll assume it was generally known but you and I just missed it. :)

OutToGetYou · 05/10/2015 15:40

"Did the woody actor really get it tattooed or just the character?"

Dp told me the actor had it done - see above about whether he might be right! ;)

SurlyCue · 05/10/2015 15:46

I won't tell him he's a genius. I'll assume it was generally known but you and I just missed it

Shaun does sound like shane but i think i remember there being a different director originally? Something has me thinking SM took over in the middle of the previous series. I could be waaay off here of course. I'm off to google.

SurlyCue · 05/10/2015 15:52

I was entirely wrong! Sorry shane meadows. Blush

Mrsjayy · 05/10/2015 16:06

Shauns name is shaun fields (think about it) still not watched but couldnt not read decided im fine with spoilers

SurlyCue · 05/10/2015 16:09

Ahhh well that's proof if ever there was! I didnt know shaun's surname.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 05/10/2015 16:35

Yes Shaun/Shane is deliberate

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 05/10/2015 16:50

Love his mother's and her husband's characters, they were lovely.

NoahVale · 05/10/2015 17:03

semi autobiographical I think

NoahVale · 05/10/2015 17:05

milky did apologise to combo,
combo made me feel sorry for him so many times. he is ace

NoahVale · 05/10/2015 17:06

if you wikipaedia shane meadows his dad wasnt in the army for a start

ProfYaffle · 05/10/2015 17:09

I found this interview with Shane Meadows, he says that the first half of the Film was autobiographical but the story departs somewhat after that.

The Shaun character is mostly him at the start, I quite like the sly humour of the name and giving himself a Common People/Dee Lite alike girlfriend at the end.

SurlyCue · 05/10/2015 17:14

And of course making smell so jealous of him having a new GF. Grin

NoahVale · 05/10/2015 17:26

I also thought Kelly was being prostuted. but Also that she didnt look made up as a heroin addict, no closure for her.

the wedding was lovely though, all happy,

cruikshank · 05/10/2015 18:44

Agree about feeling sorry for Combo. Meadows is really hard on him, isn't he - showing what we think is redemption but actually there isn't redemption at all for him in the end.

I never, ever got the 'Fields' thing!

Here is Thomas Turgoose being auditioned, when he was a young troubled boy skipping school in Grimsby. He looks really really little:

NoahVale · 05/10/2015 19:16

Stephen Graham - the amount of people that have spoken to me and said they felt really sorry for his character is one of the most rewarding things. I thought I was going to have to come out with a shield, defending and deflecting, and trying to convince people that I wasn't a racist

Quote from Stephen Graham above.
He had obviously, to me, had a really really hard life, and was frankly a bit of a psycho
