It this a joke thread? You can have my helping of Russell Crowe, yuk.

Wish they had cast someone who could actually sing to play Javert.

SuperFlyHigh · 23/08/2015 19:55

ooh no no joke. he can't sing but he is eye candy. Grin uniform and all that Grin

I thought his rendition of Stars was weirdly poignant, maybe because he doesn't have the booming voice of the usual Javerts. I honestly think that the two leads should've swapped roles - Jackman would've sung the hell out of Stars!

JoyceDivision · 23/08/2015 20:04

I love how craggy russell is getting in old age..

jackman singing at the end when he is dying.. sob sob sob!!!

twirlypoo · 23/08/2015 20:09

Ooh what channel? I fancy a sing song and a bit of Russell

SansaryaAgain · 23/08/2015 20:22

9pm, Channel 4!

firefly78 · 23/08/2015 21:45

god they arent a patch on the stage singers. love it though. not sure my DH is enjoying it much!

Mrsjayy · 23/08/2015 21:48

Dh goes to bed at will watch it then do like a bit of Russel ive seen the film a millionfew times never get tired of it

Icimoi · 23/08/2015 22:24

I saw the film when it first came out, and until tonight had mercifully forgotten the full horror of Crowe's version of Stars. Even if he really was eye candy, it wouldn't make up for that. And he definitely isn't eye candy.

SwedishEdith · 23/08/2015 22:27

God, I wish they'd stop singing. Great cast - why couldn't they have been used just to make a proper film?

firefly78 · 23/08/2015 22:33

it is too much singing. dont see why they can't talk then just have the actual songs. and russell crowe is shit.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 23/08/2015 22:36

Too much weird talky singy

Chippednailvarnish · 23/08/2015 22:43

Even people who I think can sing sound whiney.

Obviously I could do a much better job Grin

Mrsjayy · 23/08/2015 22:48

Its a musical they are meant to be singing ya nutters Grin hate cosette though she sounds like a strangled budgie

SuperFlyHigh · 23/08/2015 22:50

Icimoi he's not eye candy in everything but does look hot in a uniform gladiator and les mis. fans self

The talky singy thing is exactly how it is on stage. I've seen it on stage 3 times over 15 years, so lots of musical theatre performers, including some friends- and DP's ex in it. And I love the film. It is fab. And I defy you to not get a bit tearful when Fantine comes to take Jean Valjean when he dies.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 23/08/2015 23:02

I agree with the singing front. Not watching it tonight but have seen it and really wish they didn't sing, purely because they ruin it! Ok, so that happens often but at least when they made a film version of Phantom Gerard Butler passed off the phantom quite well in his singing, despite not being a patch of some amazing stage phantoms (John Owen Jones being the most amazing!), and Emily Rossum was actually better than a lot of stage Christines to be honest.

With Les Mis, they just can't pass it off properly at all imo.

Give me JOJ any day!

Jungfraujoch · 23/08/2015 23:03

I love, love love it- even with Russell's dodgy singing! Seen the stage show twice too - The whole thing just makes me emotional - DH just not getting it!

watfordmummy · 23/08/2015 23:08

I went to see this years ago, and tbh didn't really understand the story, as has just broken up from x and was sulking so didn't read programme!!

Tonight have read synopsis and keeping up with it, and now appreciate how good the cast were when I first saw it!!

Hey ho! All these years saying it was rubbish!! Smile

Savagebeauty · 23/08/2015 23:08

Jalvert is really a Thunderbird

Cosette is a really insipid character..like Johanna in Sweeney Todd. I wish she and Marius had taken bullets at the barricades instead of Eponine
DS knows it word for word and we are singing along. Russell Crowe grows on me.

PermetsTu · 23/08/2015 23:14

I've had to pack 8yo dd off to bed. She loves Les Mis and is word perfect. Even she was muttering about how RC doesn't do Javert justice. She's seen the stage version and wouldn't talk about anything else for at least 3 months afterwards. She was allowed to stay up long enough to see the start of her favourite bit (Enjolras and the students rising up) and now it's just me singing along, DH looking exasperated and my poor father who is in holiday with us mumbling about how films were much shorter in his day.

The casting of Javert and the Thenardiers is all wrong. Javert needs to pack more punch and the Thenardiers should be grotesque, not hammy, comedy characters.

It's one of my favourite novels and the musical is just superb.

PermetsTu · 23/08/2015 23:16

Cosette is dull and Marius is a champagne socialist. Eponine is much more interesting than Cosette. She's brave and feisty. Cosette is just a bit weak. DD and I like to chorus "WHO CARES ABOUT YOUR LONELY SOUL" as loud as we can at the relevant point.

PermetsTu · 23/08/2015 23:19

And why oh why did they cut out Grantaire's solo at this point? It's one of my favourite bits.

Mrsjayy · 23/08/2015 23:20

I woulda flung cossette in front of that gun Grin i sob at the end everytime even listening to the cd tears just come from nowhere .
