Please ca n someone explain dairy free ice cream? Some idiot phoned me and I missed that bit - if they did in fact explain itConfused.

Moln · 03/09/2015 20:15

Dairy free ice cream is ice cream without dairy.

Moln · 03/09/2015 20:22

OK in all seriousness they didn't really explain it, just that they had to make it without using diary

All the contestants used coconut milk, though it's possible to make it using almond milk or tofu - apparently

FedupNagging · 04/09/2015 08:13

I knew there would be a GBBO thread somewhere!

My favourite so far is Nadiya - she has done some lovely bakes and seems such a nice person which is always important!

Bejams, now there's a blast from the past. I had a Saturday job there in the dark ages early 80's.

I am attempting to make something from each episode the one that looks the easiest but nothing is standing out from last night particularly. May attempt an article roll with a pattern in the sponge. As I don't have as ice cream maker may have to cheat on that bit.

Davros · 04/09/2015 08:42

There was no history lesson this week, or am I mistaken?

CakeNinja · 04/09/2015 09:38

You're right Davros, they've missed out a couple i think.
Which makes me happy as I find those bits so dull!

InimitableJeeves · 04/09/2015 14:56

Do they mostly do the history lessons when they've got rid of a few contestants? I imagine they need to fill the time more at that stage, as there aren't so many people for Paul and Mary to talk to, and fewer cakes to inspect.

Davros · 04/09/2015 15:13

That would make sense but I'm sure they had them in earlier episodes. I quite like them

carabos · 04/09/2015 17:14

Ice cream made from tofu???? Confused. That doesn't sound very nice.
Thanks anyway moln.

ppeatfruit · 05/09/2015 10:05

It's lovely carabos because it soaks up flavours. I use it as cream fillings in roulades and in trifles. I tell you what I made a dairy free trifle for a french fete and they LOVED it !! I made one with dairy too and they couldn't tell the difference. Grin

Moln · 05/09/2015 10:38

I'm fairly sure it's not left as tofu flavored. That'd be questionable!!

Tofu is fairly bland so good for a base, which is surprising that they all went for coconut milk, is, well coconutty.

Disclaimer: I've never had tofu ice cream (and I don't really like ice cream that much anyway)

MarkingMyPlace9 · 05/09/2015 10:41

I find it very strange that they all wear the same clothes on both Days? And they make it very clear on Showstopper Day that it's the start of a new Day. I don't know about anyone else, but after a full Day Cooking, under pressure, my Clothes would be filthy (Floury ect, even with a Apron on) Not to mention I would be all hot and sweaty!!! Do you recon there made to wash them that Night to wear them the next Day!? I have always found it very bizarre lol

Moln · 05/09/2015 10:53

I've actually never noticed!!!!

Shall try to be more observant next episode

Moln · 05/09/2015 10:58

Oh here we are, last sentence of the the article

toldmywrath · 05/09/2015 11:18

They have to wear the same clothes (as the news article says) for continuity. The edit might use some of Saturday's facial expressions, for example, to a Sunday incident.

Trills · 05/09/2015 11:29

What if it's hot on Saturday but then cold on Sunday?

LemonRedwood · 05/09/2015 12:37

Layers. (or "lairs" as Mary would say!)

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 05/09/2015 12:52

Do we need a new thread do you think?

bakingaddict · 05/09/2015 13:04

While Brendan was technically a good baker he just wasn't contemporary and that's why he lost out on the title. Winning GBBO isn't just about being a good solid baker it's about your creations having the wow factor and Brendan just never really got that into his bakes they often looked a little bit dated.

ppeatfruit · 05/09/2015 13:41

No moin it soaks up flavours so I use maple syrup and vanilla in the tofu 'cream' and a vanilla flavoured custard powder in the custard layer or you could make ice cream with it, you'd need a lot of sweetener though , chocolate flavour would be nice, I'll try it next time the weather 's hot.

What did anyone think of extremely thin Judy mum of Andy Murray turning her nose up at gluten\sugar free last night? The chef was a bit nothingy but I like the comedian guy.

YonicScrewdriver · 05/09/2015 13:50

I like Nadiya too. First year I've really watched it!

ppeatfruit · 05/09/2015 13:53

Nadiya is AMAZING I hope she wins Grin Not one of those red nosed blokes Grin.

emotionsecho · 05/09/2015 13:53

I would love Nadiya to win.

BitOutOfPractice · 05/09/2015 15:01
