Not that I'm totally sold on Ian - I do like him, but that last comment about him finally doing something good was just cringy and smug, and I'm not sure he deserved star baker last week - but I certainly wouldn't hold it against him that he has friends who he discusses things with, and think it's fair enough to get ideas like that.

Floralnomad · 30/08/2015 10:56

If you read the article it implies that he was on the phone to this friend from Trinity college during the actual filming which is hardly in the spirit of the show . We are not Ian fans in this house , didn't mind him the first week but have been getting fed up with him since then , we think Tamal should have won star baker this week . We've been a bit dubious about Ian since the betting scandal as he lives closest to Ipswich ( competitor wise ) .

Mrsjayy · 30/08/2015 10:58

Everybody has to learn somewhere meh he got tips and ideas its not as if his chef mate baked it for him

BrilliantineMortality · 30/08/2015 12:25

toldmywrath - my daughter is autistic and these nursery rhymes are her current obsession, they drive me crazy too, but I don't get a lot of choice in the matter.

SeaRabbit · 30/08/2015 13:38

My first thought when I heard about them not being allowed to use a blow torch was to make caramel and whizz in a processor - it's quite a well- known technique.

The latest which may or may not have been on the Daily Heil website is that Ian cooks road kill... Who'd be up for TV baking fame if this is what you face?

And Ian may follow a lot of previous regular star bakers who didn't end up winning.

toldmywrath · 30/08/2015 13:41

Bless her Brilliantine- it's good the stuff you can get online these days.

Trills · 30/08/2015 20:40

I'm not even super -keen and I've seen pomegranate molasses in blogs and things LOADS over the last year or so. It's probably in an Ottolenghi book. Not a common ingredient but hardly obscure.

TheDietStartsTomorrow · 30/08/2015 21:36

When Richard got lots of star baker last year, I could see why and although I felt at times others had done just as well, it never left you feeling bored of him as his creation were quite good. Ian however, is quite boring in comparison and Nadiya or Tamal should have got it. He's okay.... not that brilliant compared to the other sad not that interesting a personality either.
Sandy was one of my favourites. I really wish shed stayed on. Nadiya, Sandy, Tamal and the young Aga girl.... forgot her name - would have loved to see them in the semi finals.

Mrsjayy · 30/08/2015 22:26

Not a clue what pomegranate molases are im assuming waitrose sells it Grin

Mrsjayy · 30/08/2015 22:28

GrinAga girl her name is Flora i keep calling her martha she was last years Aga girl

SeaRabbit · 31/08/2015 10:12

MrsJay not sure about Waitrose but Sainsburys sells it. As do Middle East shops. It's gorgeous - tangy yet sweet - made from pomegranate juice cooked down, I believe. There are recipes around for slow cooked lamb with pomegranate molasses, and it's worth trying.

BigRedBall · 31/08/2015 10:16

I really want Tamal to win. I wouldn't mind if he was my anaesthetist. Grin.

Ian is annoying...when he said "little old humble me star baker again!"..erm, no. You're not humble you show off.

emotionsecho · 01/09/2015 23:13

Just caught a headline/front page saying Sue Perkins has a brain tumour, didn't catch which paper it was. Poor Sue, I wish her well.

Emochild · 01/09/2015 23:28

It's in the mirror

Apparently it's a benign tumor in her pituatary gland that she's had for 8 years

Egghead68 · 01/09/2015 23:30

In the articles she says it is a benign growth on her pituitary gland. Not a great thing to have to live with but not in any way fatal or anything, it seems. That is a relief!

Egghead68 · 01/09/2015 23:31

Cross post.

emotionsecho · 02/09/2015 00:10

Thanks for the extra info Emo and Egg, I only saw the headline briefly.

DuchessofMalfi · 02/09/2015 07:44

Very sad to see Sandy go. She was entertaining, but that pontefract cake sauce made my stomach flip over :o

My money's on Tamal, Flora or Nadiya to win. All three are quietly brilliant but perhaps Tamal has the edge. And he's rather gorgeous too!

Hellokitty105 · 02/09/2015 13:25

I think alvin might go tonight, or maybe Matt although he did pull it back with his divine sounding cheesecake (how I wish I could of tasted it!).

Tamal or nadiya for star baker? Best not be Ian though!

ppeatfruit · 02/09/2015 13:26

Agree about Ian; come one M and P give someone else a chance, like Nadihya PH was impressed with her flavours.

Iam very glad to see they're doing a' free from' week tonight, it's what I do all the time Grin.

NoelHeadbands · 02/09/2015 20:03

Settling down with a cup of tea Brew

I feel a bit sorry for Ian, I think it's a stitch up

GrouchyKiwi · 02/09/2015 20:04

They're really making a big deal of the Ian Star Baker thing. Wonder if we're going to get a shock tonight?

I'm expecting loads of disasters since it's free-from week.

NoelHeadbands · 02/09/2015 20:06

Oh right, honey and agave and shit.

I thought they'd be using Splenda and that Confused

wankerchief · 02/09/2015 20:07

I'm here!
I've got tea and fondant fancies.

I don't have much experience in free from cooking. Tamals sounds yummy

Emochild · 02/09/2015 20:08

I think Ian might fall flat on his face tonight -in the interest of good tv obviously ????
