Well done nadiya, I'm so proud of her too! I think her soda pop design last week was brilliant, so she deserved star baker this week.

Hated Ian's fucking flower cake. So laadeedaa and pretentious. I'm glad he's been knocked off the top.

I like lots of them this year but there is a special place in my heart for Alvin. I was so happy when his pineapple cake was rated - I felt for him fretting there, having finished yonks before everyone. Alvin is a gentle soul.

Arctic roll folks! 70s staple from Bejam

Omg...Bejam was a shop wasn't it? Ive not heard that name for donkeys of years! Also just had a flashback of going there with my mum as a toddler. Was it a frozen food shop?

I loved Artic Roll. This series of GBBO is showcasing some real '70s classics isn't it? and to think they criticised poor Brendan in a previous series for this '70s looking creation.

Any guesses as to what the next '70s culinary creation will be? Will mandarin orange feature?

Bejams was like Iceland and they sold white ice cream.

I hate coconut and that's all they used for the ice cream, you could use any non dairy milk and make custard with it.

My memory of Bejam was a shop full of chest freezers. We used to get frozen orange juice in a little canister which we thought was wonderful but I'm sure was vile

I warmed to Prison Paul this week with his gusset giggles with Mel and trying to help Alvin with his flourescent green ice-cream.

I was thinking 'Holy Jesus they're saving him for last so they can give him a proper drubbing'.

That pineapple cake looked delish, and I don't even like them; maybe it's time to revisit one. I was worried for Alvin for a little while as everyone seemed quite strong, but fortunately the technical doesn't seem to have as much weight as the other two rounds. Mat was a bit mean when Alvin asked what shape was correct for the pittas, "I don't even know, mate." Of course you bloody do!

I did wonder though, what was the point of the sugar free baking challenge? It's not like people are allergic to sugar, and most of the replacements they used, honey, argave, maple syrup etc, the body identifies as being chemically the same as white sugar and reacts the same way to it. Argave has more fructose per gram than the dreaded high fructose corn syrup!

While we are at it, white flour is virtually the same as sugar as far as the body is concerned. So the point of sugar free baking is a mystery to me. Sucrose/fructose free baking would make a lot more sense.

Dh puts on weight if he just looks at sugar and his doc. says he shouldn't eat it if he wants to control his pre type 2 diabetes . (He has to cut out both sugar and wheat if he wants to lose weight so you can imagine how difficult it is for him).

Asfaik The other sugars don't send the blood sugar levels up so fast, apart from the high fructose corn syrup.

Honey, maple syrup, agave etc will all raise the blood sugar in the same way as white sugar and if you are avoiding sugar you should avoid these too.

I do feel the "sugar free" challenge did dangerously support the myth that these sweeteners are somehow difference from white sugar.

The fructose in whole fruits is slightly different as the fiber content of the fruit means the fructose is absorbed more slowly.

Well it depends on where you get your information, tbh I don't think anyone really knows and we all react to foods in different ways. I'm ok with some sugar, dh isn't.

I think Prison Paul and Mel genuinely lost it over the bikini lady. :) they seemed to have two attempts at saying the same thing and ended up collapsing in laughter both times.
