Watched GBBO last night with DH and a plate of home made flapjacks (this is becoming a tradition)... DH is totally fed up with Swotty Ian being Star Baker... I think Tamal or Nadia should have had it last night...
I adored Nadia's cheesecake creation -very creative and clever. I am a bit of a Nadia fan all around though - her facial expressions crack me up!

Hellokitty105 · 27/08/2015 12:16

It's going to get boring if all we see is Ian get star baker every week!

mazylou · 27/08/2015 12:21

Star Baker three weeks on the trot - I reckon something is going to go very wrong at some point, it's all in the storylining and edit.

Squooshed · 27/08/2015 12:39

There'll be trouble with a torte. Someone will accidentally elbow it off his workbench, he'll blow a gasket and try and kill the offender with his magimix. Then he'll be led away by armed guards all the while pelting rock buns at Mary Berry's head.

GrouchyKiwi · 27/08/2015 12:58

I'm going to be very upset when none of this comes to pass.

Moln · 27/08/2015 12:59

I think you are onto it Squoosed. Swotting Ian would then end up in Prison Paul's prison, and check cakes for files all day.

Mrsjayy · 27/08/2015 14:51

Really want that to happen Grin

BrilliantineMortality · 27/08/2015 16:46

I've been watching nursery rhymes with DD this afternoon. Can't believe how much the dad in this one looks like Mat, especially with the chef's hat!

LoveVintage · 27/08/2015 17:22

Think you are right Squooshed - it will be like Falling Down but with cakes.

Tampa is so sweet and I thought his honey and rosemary cheesecake sounded delish.

Supercosmicrays · 27/08/2015 19:51

Good spot BM Mat also looks a bit like Daddy Woodentop, tho I don't think he ever baked - that was Mummy Woodentop's job (with Jenny)

Trip down memory lane there Grin

toldmywrath · 28/08/2015 09:44

Well BM if you put a toothbrush moustache on him (the cartoon dad) he'd look like a hideous dictator. My gosh how do you cope watching those nursery rhymes? It would drive me mad

Raahh · 29/08/2015 11:00

DD1 and I have been in stitches this morning watching 'Extra slice' from last night. Sandy is very funny- and the panel were great this week. Love Henning Wehn. Grin

Hellokitty105 · 29/08/2015 11:03

I'll be catching up with extra slice tonight!

toldmywrath · 29/08/2015 18:18

Me & DS2 were watching & we said that Sandy could have her own show-she's very funny agree with you Raahh

Mrsjayy · 30/08/2015 09:30

Ah bruleegate fab Grin his casual hoodies and flakey sahd act is a ruse he is actually a steely criminal mastermind ! Tbh if he is going to win he has won already hasnt he

Icimoi · 30/08/2015 10:06

Wasn't there someone last year who got star baker several times but didn't win? ISTR he got over-ambitious in the final.

Mrsjayy · 30/08/2015 10:09

It was an all female final but yes there was somebody cant remember his name who fell at the finale hurdle he was an engineer or something

Icimoi · 30/08/2015 10:13

It's extraordinary how much time the papers seem to spend trying to dig up dirt on the contestants. The Mirror seems to be suggesting that he had some sort of unfair advantage because he used a caramelising technique which, apparently, Trinity College is famous for and his friend is a chef at Trinity. But if it's famous, what's the big deal?

It also suggests something sinister because he used pomegranate and molasses and "the astonished whistleblower told us: “There was a Middle Eastern wedding held at Trinity College recently. They had pomegranate with molasses in their dessert.”" Significantly, no suggestion that the dessert was creme brûlée.

I really can't see what is the difference between getting ideas by word of mouth and getting them by going through recipe books.

LineyReborn · 30/08/2015 10:42

I agree, Icimoi. So what if he got ideas from a mate? He still has to execute the dish.

RunAwayHome · 30/08/2015 10:48

Yes I thought the same sort of thing when they were trying to rubbish Marie for having done a week-long course in Paris 30 years ago or something.

If you are a keen amateur baker/cook, you do tend to do things like go on courses, and have other friends who are cooks and chefs, and discuss cooking, and do a lot of it and test it out on people and probably make cakes for bake sales and maybe even get known for it in your circle and get asked to do it for money. You might well go to fancy restaurants or food events, you might get to know people, you experiment with ideas you've tried or they've had. This is all perfectly normal for how you become a better cook!

And besides, pomegranate and pomegranate molasses is a very common ingredient in a lot of Middle Eastern cooking, and the fact that it is in a dessert for a middle eastern wedding is not the least surprising. It has also become one of these 'popular' ingredients in cooking here lately, with loads of restaurants and recipe books etc suddenly featuring it. Even my local supermarket sells it now.
