I think Holly's mum was absolutely right to challenge and jack's tie break question was MUCH easier than Holly's

Very unfair

I think Thomas is actually a true genius!

Jack's parents seem very sensible.

Thomas has the triple benefit of aptitude, work ethic and confidence.

Still not seeing much of any of the girls apart from Holly. Big focus on the boys.

That spelling round was sooooo unfair.

Sad to see David go....he seems like a great kid.

I can't believe David was kept locked in his room with the crisps and the cupping, some fresh air might have helped.

Agree with flaming that all contestants should have the same set of questions. Especially the tie break, that was ridiculously unbalanced.

I think holly and her mother came across as poor losers. She clearly said the wrong word and at 12 years old should have accepted this. Thought she would have done better given that she reads so much.love the way the kids are supporting each other too. Sorry to lose David as he was funny.

What I thought was a shame was that Holly was clearly put off by getting the question wrong and passed on the rest. They should have waited till the end of the round before changing their decision. She might have done better if they had.

Yes I agree. The other boy who was awarded 'ecclesiastical' went on to get others right and he may also have been put off if he had been told it was wrong at the time. It's ok for the adjudicator to say that in hindsight it was wrong but didn't matter because he got others right, but he might not have done if it had been judged wrongly at the time. If you get my gist.

Agree with docHollywood. I also agree with fairnotfit about the lack of girls except Holly. If it's because other parents didn't want TV cameras around they should have said that rather than make it appear such a sexist biased programme.
The sudden death round was extremely unfair and tested luck (some spellings easier) and nerves under pressure not IQ.

Aargh god I'm watching this series through my hands again. At least there has only been one bow tie so far this time. I was in Mensa aged 13 and I am really happy to see these kids (who may not be having a great time in school) have their day in the sun but I think this show really shows the worst of what Mensa does for gifted children. These kids need the chance to do stuff with their gifted peers, to try new things and get them wrong, to meet people cleverer than them and to get some decent advise about university. I got all that from Mensa but not through bloody competitions...

Poor Holly. It was obvious that the point being deducted through her, and her tie-break question was much harder. I agree that the mum should have challenged the decision. Considering Holly's confidence boost following the math's round, it's a shame this has happened.

Thomas is amazimg. His mum is supportive.

I like Thomas Smile he's the only child who I think is a real genius as by the looks of things his mum just provides the opportunity to learn and he drinks it all up , rather than some of the poor souls there that look like they need fresh air and an early night! He seems to have a well balanced mum too.

The cupping thing makes me seriously angry, it's soooooo painful no wonder David was howling! Such a nice boy though, funny about his lucky pantsGrin

I didn't really understand Jack's parents saying it wouldn't have been their choice to enter the competition - well, at 12 it SHOULD be their choice. They get to decide whether their son enters or not. There's no way I would allow my 12 year old to even if he gave Stephen Hawking a run for his money!

Holly's mother was absolutely right to challenge. They'd already demonstrated that they were prepared to accept mispronunciations. All that faffing around and changing their minds almost certainly put her off.

Am I right in thinking that they'd been given all these words to revise beforehand? I remember seeing that last year. If so, yet again, it's just a memory test. They should be given a range of the more difficult commonly used words.

I also thought the sudden death thing with spellings was unfair. How many marks they got was entirely dictated by whether they got the tricky spelling near the beginning or end of their session, and as was demonstrated they could be knocked out by something that was simply a slip of the tongue.

Just watched on catch-up. Agree that Thomas does seem like a true genius, and the rest of his family are a bit bewildered by his intelligence.
On the whole I don't find this year's lot (parents included) as weird or obnoxious as last year.

Holly seemed really unhappy - I'm glad her mum challenged the adjudication. I was shouting at the telly when Giovanni pronounced ecclesiastical wrongly!

This episode was a bit rubbish.

Both Holly and David going was rubbish - especially David as he had come equal first in the morning. And Holly had done well on the maths round the day before - coming second to Thomas.

David really really needed some fresh air - I thought that Thomas's mum's "do a question then a shuttle run" was rather inspired.
