naffedoff, he sits with his stepbrother in A2 Maths! Think it's A2 not AS as his stepbrother is 18.

I'm not sure about that cupping, I've had it and it hurts so much it made me cry! Poor boySad

I want to get them all out in the sunshine for a bit, some of them look so pasty.

I hate this programme, makes me so angry,I have no idea why I watch it!Hmm Grin

Yes that cupping looks awful, am amazed they still do it after being investigated by social services!!

I had 3 cups and that was bad enough, never again! He has them all down his back and they leave huge bruises.

naffed our dc are at the same school then! Thomas is in a Yr7 form group and does some subjects with them, but yes, he is doing sciences (at least) with yr 10. Holds his own very well I am told Smile He does have regular friends his own age, and I know he's in at least one sports team too so it's not all classroom for him!

I though it must be further maths that Thomas sits with his step brother for as hasn't he already got an A in Maths A level? Was surprised how long the step brother took to work out that Thomas was working six years ahead.......

Suspect Thomas is a true genius.

The trouble with the competition is that it only really tests memory and maths. You can't really test history ability by asking who shot Harold in the eye. They need to be set an essay discussing the battle of Hastings and examining the evidence that Harold was shot in the eye.(Or something like that - I'm a mathematician who gave up history at 13.)

But that would be rubbish telly. So I don't think someone like Holly can truly show her abilities on the competition.

The programme makers also seem to think that all viewers are unable to get basic maths. They have already said that you need 8 points to get through. Holly got 10 in the maths and Thomas got 16. So Holly doesn't need to "conquer her nerves" and Thomas doesn't need to deal with something he's (according to him) not very good at. They don't need to do anything. Except possibly avoid thumping the annoying bloke who asked the questions. Grin

If Thomas doesn't win after his extraordinary performance so far then something weird has happened with the editing.

noble One thing I don't like about it is that the points don't carry on from one day to another. Thomas gets no more credit for getting 30ish points from each of the first 2 days than the child who got 8ish on the first 2 days and just scraped through.

But I guess they are trying to make a TV programme - not truly find the most intelligent child.

Just watched episode 2 and agree the only one so far who seems like a true all-round genius is Thomas.

I also agree that the show seems to favour maths and memory ability - don't know why they seem to put more of the linguistic stuff (eloquent, aren't I? :o) at the beginning and mix it up a bit.

Agree with them not really analysing the ability to assess and prioritise information and present it well, in the way one would in a history assessment based on original sources or an English exam paper.
They do spelling but that's just more memory.
Agree that the cumulative score should win as well, with no-one being kicked out until the last day.

I remember in a previous year they had debating. That was where the more mathsy children struggled. I also remember that one of the boys had his script written by his mum Hmm

I found Julian pretty arrogant in this episode. The bit where they said he was a published writer (can't find any info on his book though?) - think the interviewer asked him to read a favourite passage and his "do you REALLY think I could choose..." response really irked me.

I think the children should be brought in one at a time and all given the same words/anagrams.

Report
Emochild · 14/07/2015 21:33

I've managed a grand total of 1 anagram!

I've got all but one of the anagrams but find the definition questions much harder.

I think it was fair enough for her to challenge the decision, given the inconsistency.

I'm watching but ranting to DH about how this is such a ridiculous thing and all about the parents.

LavenderRain · 14/07/2015 21:43

I think Holly seems really unhappy and didn't want to be there.
Thomas on the other hand is full of beans and seems to enjoy being there!
