I know there's a few of you out there...

I know that car was small, but would you really choose to give birth in the open in pouring rain rather than shelter in it? I don't think they even checked whether the church was open or had a handy porch, did they?

And given that David was able to get in to ring the church bells at the end why on earth stay out in the rain!

Elendon · 20/03/2017 12:57

It was obvious to give birth in the shelter of a car. But this had the smack of Neighbours of old. Remember the birth whilst wearing tights?

Bizarre. What's the point of this programme anymore.

Oh, was that what happened? I seriously thought one of the scriptwriters had lost it even more than usual and we were supposed to believe there was a divine intervention thing going on, the Virgin Mary watching over the new mother, bells pealing out to welcome the baby etc. I watched the whole episode in increasingly horrified fascination at how ridiculous it all was - but congratulations to the actors playing David and Robyn who managed to make something of their parts against all the odds.

I think I'm only watching now for those exciting Dervla moments. She's the best remaining character.

Yes, the baby didn't cry when born (or if it did, I didn't hear it) but no-one seemed too bothered about that. And yes, I was concerned about it in the pouring rain, particularly once Robyn lost consciousness.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/03/2017 18:02

The 'birth in a graveyard' story was a load of rubbish.

And there is no way David would have been able to get to ring the bells - bell towers are always kept securely locked so people can't get in and damage the bells, and risk hurting themselves. And one person cannot ring a peal of bells like that.

Pixel · 20/03/2017 18:53

Ha ha, were you listening in on me while I was shouting at the telly? Grin

As for squatting to give birth, I know we aren't supposed to mention that Robyn was enormous even before she got pregnant but the fact is I don't think she could squat if she tried.

Quite liked David's little dig at the DWP at the end, but why was he telling Noel in particular? Did I miss something?

ButtonMooooon · 20/03/2017 19:12

SDTG my Slimming World Group is in a church hall and there is a single rope in the foyer which is apparently for the bells. Every week I am tempted to pull it to see what happens!!!!

Megatherium · 20/03/2017 22:02

For what it's worth, I sort of assumed that the sound of bells was from something like a clock chiming rather than anyone ringing them. But that could have just been me being dim.

I suppose it's just about possible the bells might be the ones that can be played by one person mechanically - can't remember what they're called. But that would presuppose David knowing how that mechanism works, which would be one hell of a coincidence.

HesterLee · 21/03/2017 19:05

I must admit I just assumed David rang the bells, as he came running from...somewhere when the others arrived. I hadn't thought of divine intervention, but now you come to mention it!!

morningtoncrescent62 · 21/03/2017 20:17

But not as dim as me. I thought it must be the Virgin Mary come to the help of a new mother - it genuinely never occurred to me it could be David ringing the bells.

Anyone else keep waiting for Tom Chambers to quickstep it across Resus with Connie dressed in a harlequin outfit? It couldn't be more odd than some of the storylines around at the moment.

Pixel · 21/03/2017 20:37

I did realise it was David with the bells but must admit it took me a second! Luckily he retained enough sanity just in time to save the day just as Charlie and co were giving up. Phew!

Did he actually cause Robyn to haemorrhage? It was all a bit quick and I wasn't sure. I thought he said something about "shall I give it a pull" and Robyn saying no and passing out, (I assume he meant the afterbirth), then there was a lot of blood. So did he pull it? I just remember that happening on Call the Midwife when the teenage mother was giving birth secretly, and her mum (who was pretending to be pregnant to cover up for her) did the same thing and nearly killed her.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/03/2017 20:41

Maybe a carrilon, @Megatherium? That would explain it.

My FIL is a bell ringer so I have had to listen to some very long winded lectures on it - and I read around it a bit, after reading Nine Tailors by Dorothy L Sayers, and I think a peal of bells like that is usually rung by several people, each on one bell, or by a carrilon, rather than just one rope.

But I suspect it is one of those Casualty things where we are supposed to suspend disbelief and just accept it!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/03/2017 20:43

I thought the PPH was due to some retained placenta - I could,be wrong, though - I slightly lost track.

Megatherium · 22/03/2017 00:27

Absolutely a peal is usually rung by several people. Unless David was himself a bellringer, I'd be surprised if he could achieve anything more than a discordant jangling ringing a normal church bell.

Aren't the bell ropes usually well out of reach to stop anyone just giving them a tug?

I posted upthread about this. The Church hall where I go to Slimming World has a single rope in the foyer as I am tempted to pull it and run every week. Maybe I will tonight, just for the purposes of this thread you understand Wink

Do tell us the results. Especially if Charlie and Duffy come careering round the corner to rescue someone.

Even with the risk that Charlie and Duffy might turn up, @ButtonMooooon? Handing out wise advice in between Public Displays of Affection?
